The 'core Guimaraesiella' comprise a morphologically rather homogeneous group of avian chewing lice (Phthiraptera), most of which remain undescribed. Based on an integrative approach combining morphological characters and analyses of COI barcoding sequences, we here describe two new species within this group: Guimaraesiella impiger new species and Guimaraesiella stellana new species. Both species were collected from hippoboscid flies in Singapore, suggesting that they are capable of moving phoretically between hosts. In at least G. impiger, this was confirmed as louse specimens from another 30

Two new species of the louse genus Philopteroides Mey, 2004 are described and illustrated from two host species of painted berrypeckers, endemic to New Guinea: Philopteroides sinancorellus n. sp. ex Oreocharis arfaki (Meyer, 1875) (tit berrypecker), and Philopteroides gigas n. sp. ex Paramythia montium De Vis, 1892 (crested berrypecker). Both louse species belong to the beckeri species-group based on their short, broad preantennal areas, and shallow median indentations of the hyaline margin. The description of these two new species brings the total number of Philopteroides species to 15. An am

The current study describes the chewing lice community associated with seabird populations resident at the São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean in Pernambuco State, Brazil. Adults of three species of seabirds were captured using hand-nets for the collection of biometric data and specimens of ectoparasites. In total, 320 birds were examined (120 Sula leucogaster (Boddaert), Brown Booby; 120 Anous stolidus (L.), --Brown Noddy; and 80 Anous minutus Boie, Black Noddy) of which 95% were infested with 8,625 chewing lice, representing eight species of the genera Actornithophilus,

The genus Neopsittaconirmus Conci, 1942 is a host-specific genus, found on both wild and captive parrots and love birds (order Psittaciformes). Two species of this genus: N. lybartota (Ansari, 1947) and N. chandabani (Ansari, 1947) have been previously reported from the Punjab province, Pakistan. We recorded N. lybartota from Psittacula eupatria nipalensis (n = 2), Psittacula krameri borealis (n = 13), and captive Psittacula krameri krameri (n = 4) with the mean intensity of 2.0 ± 1, 2.13 ± 0.35 and 2.25 ± 0.47, respectively; the prevalence of louse infestation was 62% in P. krameri borealis a

The endemic avifauna of Arabia is unique and characteristic through the whole region. Little is known about these birds and their ectoparasites. The Arabian partridge Alectoris melanocephala (Rüppell, 1835) and Philby's partridge Alectoris philbyi Lowe, 1934 are two endemic species which are distributed through the Sarawat Mountains in Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Captive breeding population of these birds were examined for chewing lice at the National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) near Ta'if. Only one rare species of louse, Cuculotogaster arabicus (Clay 1938), was found to infest these birds. Th

Galictis cuja is one of the least known mustelids in South America, with its frequency and distribution poorly documented across the Neotropical region from Mexico to Brazil. In February 2024, a female was rescued by fishermen on Porto Beach in Imbituba, Santa Catarina. A clinical examination revealed ectoparasites on the animal, identified as Trichodectes galictidis, a louse species not detected in these animals for over 70 years. This study explores the revival of knowledge regarding the host-parasite relationship between Trichodectes galictidis and Galictis cuja, highlighting a significant

Procellariidae is the most diverse family of the order Procellariiformes, with 13 genera and about 90 species of seabirds. The genus Calonectris is represented by three species in the Atlantic Ocean. Bartonella spp. is a globally distributed bacterium primarily affecting mammals, with transmission through hematophagous arthropod vectors. Recent studies have found Bartonella in non-mammals like birds and turtles, prompting the present study to explore the potential role of chewing lice in its transmission. Here, we report two different Bartonella genotypes in each lice species identified: one s

The importance of ectoparasites in the transmission of pathogens, as well as the variability of species from one region to another, motivated this notification of the ectoparasite lice Campanulotes compar in range chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus L.) reared in an extensive system in the city of Apodi, Rio Grande do Norte state, in the Northeast region of Brazil. The examined birds were infested with ten males and six females of C. compar. Thus, C. compar is recorded as parasitizing chickens in the state of Rio Grande do Norte after 77 years from its unique citation in the Southeast region of

Hitherto, the chewing louse genus Goniodes Nitzsch, 1818 (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera: Goniodidae) has been the repository of many morphologically different species, which have been placed in separate groups by some authors. The morphological variation among species of Goniodes is so extensive that no characters can unequivocally separate it from closely related genera within the Goniodidae, in particular Goniocotes Burmeister, 1838. Based on a thorough examination of many species, especially the type species of related genera, we propose to divide Goniodes into thirty-one smaller, morphologicall

We report the first records of chewing lice from an isolated population of the solitary tinamou (formerly known as Tinamus solitarius pernambucensis Berla, 1946) in the Pernambuco Centre of Endemism (PCE), Brazil. All louse records previously published from the solitary tinamou came from the populations south of the São Francisco River, formerly known as Tinamus solitarius solitarius (Vieillot, 1819). Five known species of the family Heptapsogasteridae were identified from the northern population of this host: Heptarthrogaster grandis Carriker, 1936; Ornicholax alienus (Giebel, 1874); Pterocot

The chewing louse subgenus Cicchinella new subgenus is erected and described for species of Guimaraesiella Eichler, 1949, parasitizing Old World babblers (Leiothrichidae, Pellorneidae, Timaliidae). The subgenus is divided into three species groups based on chaetotaxy, head and genitalia of both sexes. Two species are redescribed: Guimaraesiella (Cicchinella) sehri (Ansari, 1955) from Trochalopteron lineatum lineatum (Vigors, 1831) and T. lineatum setafer (Hodgson, 1836), and Guimaraesiella (Cicchinella) avinus (Ansari, 1956) from Trochalopteron subunicolor subunicolor Blyth, 1843. Palestine hosts a large diversity of birds, with 393 recorded species, but little data are available on the chewing lice fauna found on these birds. In this study, we surveyed the species of chewing lice found on the common myna, Acridotheres tristis, which is one of the most invasive bird species in the world. Forty-five mynas were examined to collect their ectoparasites, which were preserved and slide mounted. Among the 1004 chewing lice processed, we identified two species: Menacanthus eurysternus (Burmeister, 1838) (prevalence 100%) and Brueelia chayanh Ansari, 1955 (prevalence 82.2%). No

Organelle genome fragmentation has been found in a wide range of eukaryotic lineages; however, its use in phylogenetic reconstruction has not been demonstrated. We explored the use of mitochondrial (mt) genome fragmentation in resolving the controversial suborder-level phylogeny of parasitic lice (order Phthiraptera). There are approximately 5000 species of parasitic lice in four suborders (Amblycera, Ischnocera, Rhynchophthirina, and Anoplura), which infest mammals and birds. The phylogenetic relationships among these suborders are unresolved despite decades of studies. We sequenced the mt ge
