BACKGROUND: In 2011-2012, Northern Vietnam experienced its first large scale hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD) epidemic. In 2011, a major HFMD epidemic was also reported in South Vietnam with fatal cases. This 2011-2012 outbreak was the first one to occur in North Vietnam providing grounds to study the etiology, origin and dynamic of the disease. We report here the analysis of the VP1 gene of strains isolated throughout North Vietnam during the 2011-2012 outbreak and before.

CO dehydrogenases (CODH) are metalloenzymes that reversibly oxidize CO to CO2 at a buried NiFe4S4 active site. BACKGROUND: Approximately 4% of the African-American population possess a valine-to-isoleucine (V122I) substitution within the transthyretin protein that results in a tendency for a normally tetrameric protein to dissociate into misfolded, monomeric subunits. These misfolded proteins can then accumulate pathologically and cause an autosomal dominant amyloid cardiomyopathy. Homozygous patients are infrequently documented in case reports, and though there are larger studies among heterozygous patients, there is a lack of studies or reports comparing disease within a family.

Previous studies have identified some key amino acid residues in scorpion toxins blocking potassium channels. In particular, the most numerous toxins belonging to the α-KTx family and affecting voltage-gated potassium channels (KV) present a conserved K-C-X-N motif in the C-terminal half of their sequence. We describe a patient with maple syrup urine disease in whom an acrodermatitis enteropathica-like syndrome developed while he was receiving a branched-chain amino acid-free formula. Iatrogenically induced isoleucine deficiency developed and resulted in a decreased protein accretion and persistent increase in the plasma concentrations of leucine. A rapid clinical response to isoleucine supplementation was noted. This observation underscores the risks of using amino acid-free formulas without adequate supplementation of deficient amino acids.

Insect pests like Plutella xylostella cause significant crop losses, and the overuse of synthetic pesticides has led to resistance and ecological imbalance. This study evaluated the insecticidal properties of 1-isoleucine, N-allyloxycarbonyl-, dodecyl ester, isolated from Actinokineospora fastidiosa. A review is presented of 22 published cases of verified or probable mitochondrial 2-methylacetoacetyl-CoA thiolase deficiency, a disorder of isoleucine and ketone body metabolism. The clinical expression, characterized by ketoacidosis, vomiting and lethargy, is highly variable. Typical age of onset is between 6 and 24 months. BACKGROUND: A previous study reported that the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum enters an altered growth state upon extracellular withdrawal of the essential amino acid isoleucine. Parasites slowed transit through the cell cycle when deprived of isoleucine prior to the onset of S-phase.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the compliance of the diet with limited branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) content in long-term observation of patients with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD).
