Respiratory responses to sustained isometric muscle contractions in man: the effect of muscle mass.

1. Respiratory responses to sustained isometric contractions of a small mass of muscle (the finger flexors) during handgripping, and of a larger mass of muscle (the quadriceps) during extension of the leg at the knee, have been studied in man. 2. For both masses of muscle the increases of ventilation and of oxygen consumption were greater for contractions at 40% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) than for contractions at 20% MVC. 3. The increase of ventilation was not related to the mass of muscle involved. 4. At 20% MVC oxygen consumption during contraction of the quadriceps was greater than

Circulatory effects of isometric muscle contractions, performed separately and in combination with dynamic exercise.

Studies on central circulation and regional blood flow were performed in healthy male volunteers at rest, during sustained isometric forearm contraction at 20% of MVC, during dynamic leg exercise (100 W) and during combined isometric and dynamic exercise. In 10 subjects pulmonary oxygen uptake, arterio-venous oxygen difference, heart rate, leg blood flow and blood pressures in the pulmonary and subclavian arteries and in the right atrium were measured. In 4 of these subjects the temperature was measured in mixed venous blood and in subcutaneous tissue in an attempt to further analyse the blood

Functional data for the diagnosis of patellofemoral laxity obtained by MRI during quadriceps isometric contraction.

Patellofemoral instability is related to anatomy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides anatomic detail, but spoiled gradient echo (SPGR) imaging during isometric quadriceps contraction provides objective functional data for diagnosing patellofemoral laxity. Knee MRI studies and medical charts of 398 patients were retrospectively reviewed. Two independent blinded observers evaluated the knee MRI studies for patellofemoral morphology and patellar position on axial SPGR images during relaxation and isometric quadriceps contraction for lateral patellar migration. Charts were reviewed for hist

The effect of induced alkalosis and submaximal cycling on neuromuscular response during sustained isometric contraction.

The aim of this study was to determine if inducing metabolic alkalosis would alter neuromuscular control after 50 min of standardized submaximal cycling. Eight trained male cyclists (mean age 32 years, s = 7; [Vdot]O(2max) 62 ml . kg(-1) x min(-1), s = 8) ingested capsules containing either CaCO(3) (placebo) or NaHCO(3) (0.3 g x kg(-1) body mass) in eight doses over 2 h on two separate occasions, commencing 3 h before exercise. Participants performed three maximal isometric voluntary contractions (MVC) of the knee extensors while determining the central activation ratio by superimposing electr

Force fluctuations during the Maximum Isometric Voluntary Contraction of the quadriceps femoris in haemophilic patients.

In the general population, the degenerative processes in joints are directly related to adult age, and osteoarthrosis represents the most frequent musculoskeletal alteration. In the haemophilic patient, the degenerative processes in the joint begin at very early ages, and are directly related to musculoskeletal bleeding episodes, which are occasionally subclinical and constitute haemophilic arthropathy. In the haemophilic patient, arthropathy constitutes the most frequent, severe and disabling pathology, and its assessment includes muscular force-related parameters. We have studied the value o

Getting Stronger Without Moving an Inch: A Randomized Controlled Trial Utilizing Maximal Isometric Co-Contraction.

Background: Maximal isometric co-contraction (MICC) of upper-limb muscles enhances strength and size, but its effects on lower-limb function are unknown. The aim of this study was to examine whether MICC training targeting the lower limbs can improve muscular strength and functional performance in sedentary adults. Methods: Twenty sedentary individuals (10 men, 10 women; 48.5 ± 7.5 years; BMI = 24.8 ± 4.2 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to either an experimental (EXP) or control (CON) group. The EXP group performed MICC of the knee flexors and extensors three times per week for four weeks, compl

The EEG-Based Fusion Entropy-Featured Identification of Isometric Contraction Forces under the Same Action.

This study explores the important role of assessing force levels in accurately controlling upper limb movements in human-computer interfaces. It uses a new method that combines entropy to improve the recognition of force levels. This research aims to differentiate between different levels of isometric contraction forces using electroencephalogram (EEG) signal analysis. It integrates eight different entropy measures: power spectrum entropy (PSE), singular spectrum entropy (SSE), logarithmic energy entropy (LEE), approximation entropy (AE), sample entropy (SE), fuzzy entropy (FE), alignment entr

Torque complexity of maximal knee extensor isometric contraction in individuals following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Current rehabilitation goals following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction are structured around the maximal force generating capabilities of the muscle. Force fluctuations, an index of force control, have been observed to alter post- anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The temporal structure, or "complexity" of force fluctuations may provide important insight into the post-operative muscular recovery. The aims of this study were 1) to compare quadriceps torque complexity in anterior cruciate ligament reconstructed patients to the contralateral limb and to healthy, con

Force variability during isometric biceps contraction in children with secondary dystonia due to cerebral palsy.

Children with secondary dystonia due to cerebral palsy (CP) often exhibit excess variability in their movements. To investigate the relationship between excess variability and single-joint control in these children, we compared their force variations during single-joint isometric tasks to age-matched controls. Subjects performed isometric biceps contractions at six target force levels scaled to their maximum voluntary contraction. Similar studies in healthy adults have shown that movement variability exhibits characteristics of signal-dependent noise (SDN). We look for the first time at whethe

Unilateral isometric contraction induces REDD1 and suppresses insulin-stimulated mTORC1 and protein synthesis in non-contracted muscle of male mice.

Skeletal muscle hypertrophy is promoted by mechanical loading and is associated with activation of mTORC1 signaling. While REDD1, a stress-responsive inhibitor of mTORC1, is typically downregulated in contracting muscle, we previously reported that unilateral isometric contraction increases REDD1 expression in the contralateral non-contracted muscle. The functional significance of this response remains unclear. This study tested whether REDD1 induction in non-contracted muscle attenuates anabolic signaling under insulin-stimulated conditions. Male C57BL/6J mice underwent unilateral isometric c

Impaired force control and muscle activation during isometric contractions in people with multiple sclerosis.

Motor impairments affect up to 80% of people living with multiple sclerosis (MS) and are often asymmetrical, resulting in self-reports of more- and less-affected legs. The purpose of our study was to examine asymmetries in the neural control of force applied by lower leg muscles in people with MS. Eighteen people with MS and 17 healthy controls performed two types of submaximal isometric contractions with dorsiflexors and plantar flexors. The outcomes included measures of force control and electromyographic (EMG) activity of lower-leg muscles. Force control was worse in people with MS compared

Neuromuscular Characteristics of Unilateral and Bilateral Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contractions following ACL Reconstruction.

Despite the advancement of diagnostic surgical techniques in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and rehabilitation protocols following ACL injury, only half of the athletes return to sports at a competitive level. A major concern is neuromechanical dysfunction, which occurs with injuries persisting in operated and non-operated legs following ACL rehabilitation. One of the criteria for a safe return to sports participation is based on the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) performed unilaterally and a comparison between the 'healthy knee' and the 'operated knee'. The pr

Dystonic neck muscles show a shift in relative autospectral power during isometric contractions.

OBJECTIVE: To identify effects of a deviant motor drive in the autospectral power of dystonic muscles during voluntary contraction in cervical dystonia patients. METHODS: Submaximal (20%) isometric head-neck tasks were performed with the head fixed, measuring surface EMG of the sternocleidomastoid, splenius capitis and semispinalis capitis in CD patients and controls. Autospectral power of muscle activity, and head forces was analyzed using cumulative distribution functions (CDF). A downward shift between the theta/low alpha-band (3-10Hz) and the high alpha/beta-band (10-30Hz) was detected us

Two maximal isometric contractions attenuate the magnitude of eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage.

This study investigated whether maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVC-ISO) would attenuate the magnitude of eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage. Young untrained men were placed into one of the two experimental groups or one control group (n = 13 per group). Subjects in the experimental groups performed either two or 10 MVC-ISO of the elbow flexors at a long muscle length (20° flexion) 2 days prior to 30 maximal isokinetic eccentric contractions of the elbow flexors. Subjects in the control group performed the eccentric contractions without MVC-ISO. No significant changes in maxima

Changes in perceived finger force produced by muscular contractions under isometric and anisometric conditions.

We compared matching of finger forces under isometric conditions with matching of forces produced against a spring load (anisometric conditions) in twenty normal subjects. The instruction was to generate the same force in both hands holding a grip between thumb and index finger in each hand. Visual feedback indicating the target force and the actual force applied were presented for one (reference) hand only. The forces produced in each hand were measured continuously during matching trials. A special device provided the opportunity to change from isometric to anisometric force production. Matc

Skeletal muscle tension, flow, pressure, and EMG during sustained isometric contractions in humans.

In five healthy males sustained isometric torques during elbow flexion, knee extension, and plantar flexion correlated positively with intramuscular tissue pressure (MTP) in the range 0-80% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). During passive compression of the muscle at rest 133-Xenon muscle clearance stopped when MTP reached diastolic arterial pressure (DAP) indicating that the muscle vascular bed was occluded. However, during sustained contraction this relation between DAP, flow and MTP was not seen. In two cases 133-Xenon clearance from M. soleus did not stop in spite of an 80% maxim

Modulation of Hamstrings Neural Drive During Isometric Contractions of the Hip Extensors and Knee Flexors.

The aim of the study was to compare motor-unit discharge characteristics across regions of the hamstring muscles during hip-extension and knee-flexion. Fourteen healthy adults (2 females) performed isometric contractions with the hip extensors and knee flexors at 10% and 40% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) torque. High-density surface electromyography was recorded from proximal and distal regions of biceps femoris and semitendinosus. Motor units were decomposed and tracked between tasks using a filter reapplication approach. The outcome measures included mean discharge rate (MDR), coeff

The relationship between prescribed ratings of perceived exertion and force production in repeated isometric contractions.

Ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) are frequently used to monitor and prescribe exercise intensity. However, studies examining the shape and robustness of how feelings of effort map onto objective outputs are limited and report inconsistent results. To address this, we investigated whether (1) producing isometric forces according to RPE levels reliably leads to differences in force output, (2) if feelings of effort map linearly or non-linearly onto force output, and (3) if this mapping is robust when visual feedback and social facilitation are present. In a counterbalanced repeated measures d

Neuromuscular characterisation in Cerebral Palsy using hybrid Hill-type models on isometric contractions.

BACKGROUND: Muscles of individuals with Cerebral Palsy (CP) undergo structural changes over their lifespan including an increase in muscle stiffness, decreased strength and coordination. Being able to identify these changes non-invasively would be beneficial to improve understanding of CP and assess therapy effectiveness over time. This study aims to adapt an existing EMG-driven Hill-type muscle model for neuromuscular characterisation during isometric contractions of the elbow joint. METHODS: Participants with (n = 2) and without CP (n = 8) performed isometric force ramps with contraction le
