First Description of Life Stages of Anilocra prionuri Williams and Bunkley-Williams, 1986 (Isopoda: Cymothoidae) and Growth-associated Morphological Changes.

Cymothoidae are mainly described based on the morphology of adult females, making species identification difficult because of the limited morphological information on male, juvenile, and manca life stages. In particular, most species in the genus Anilocra Leach, 1818 lack morphological information beyond that of females, highlighting the need to accumulate such data. In the present study, we described the aegathoid stage, male, and transitional morphology of Anilocra prionuri Williams and Bunkley-Williams, 1986 collected from Japanese waters and documented changes in morphology with growth for

A morphological and molecular study of Ligia exotica Roux, 1828 (Crustacea: Isopoda: Ligiidae) from Japan, with descriptions of two new species.

Ligia exotica Roux, 1828 was originally described based on specimens collected on a ship that came from Cayenne in French Guiana, and has been known to be widely distributed in the world. In Japan this species is the most common in Ligia, and two forms of L. exotica inhabit Osaka Bay, central Japan. To reveal the accurate scientific names of the two forms, we examined not only the detailed morphology but also 16S rRNA and NaK nucleotide sequences, together with L. exotica from another Japanese locality and the related species, L. shinjiensis Tsuge, 2008. As a result, three species, Ligia exoti

Protandrous Hermaphroditic Reproductive System in the Adult Phases of Mothocya renardi (Bleeker, 1857) (Cymothoidae: Isopoda: Crustacea) -Light and Electron Microscopy Study.

The reproductive system of Mothocya renardi (Bleeker, 1857), a protandrous hermaphroditic cymothoid that infects the belonid fish Strongylura leiura Bleeker, 1850, is characterized using light and electron microscopy. Three protandrous hermaphroditic adult phases are identified: male, transitional and female. Each phase includes a paired reproductive system, one on either side of the gut. Each consists of three lobed testes, followed by an ovary, then a vas deferens that opens into a penis on the same side. During the male phase, all testis lobes are filled with germ cells at various stages of

Two new species and a new record of Bopyrinae (Isopoda: Bopyridae) infesting Alpheidae and Hippolytidae, with comments on the genus Bopyrina Kossmann, 1881.

Two new bopyrids, Bopyrinina articulata n. sp. and Bopyrinella asymmetrica n. sp. are described from French Polynesia, the Red Sea, and the Philippines. Bopyrinina articulata n.sp. infests Salmoneus cf. gracilipes Miya, and is distinguishable from other species of this genus by the structure of the maxilliped, pleopods and oostegite 1. Bopyrinella asymmetrica n. sp. is most similar to Bopyrinella albida Shiino, 1958, but females differ from that species because all pereomeres on the short side have round dorsolateral bosses and its pleotelson is greatly distorted. Bopyrina ocellata (Czerniavsk

Isonebula clavuslongus n. sp. (Isopoda: Cymothoidae) parasitizing Myloplus ternetzi (Norman, 1929), a fish of the family Serrasalmidae, in the Brazilian Amazon region.

Crustaceans of the family Cymothoidae are important components of the invertebrate fauna of marine and freshwater environments. The genus Isonebula Taberner, 1977, has only two described species (Isonebula maculatus (Taberner, 1977) and Isonebula acanthopleon Taberner 1998), which are both parasites of freshwater fish in South America. During a field survey of fish parasites in the Araguari River, state of Amapá, Brazilian Amazon region, we found a new species of the genus Isonebula infesting the mouth (on the host's tongue) of Myloplus ternetzi (Norman, 1929), a characiform of the family Serr

Redescription and molecular characterisation of the fish ectoparasite Anilocra capensis Leach, 1818 (Isopoda: Cymothoidae), with description of six new species of Anilocra Leach, 1818 from Africa.

BACKGROUND: Anilocra capensis Leach, 1818 is the only named species of Anilocra Leach, 1818 from South Africa. Anilocra is a large genus (> 40 species) with high levels of diversity reported from the Caribbean and Indo-West Pacific. Considering it is highly unlikely that all records of Anilocra from South Africa can be of a single species, the aim of this study was to better understand the diversity of Anilocra from this region and continent. METHODS: To redescribe A. capensis, the syntypes of A. capensis and specimens recorded as A. capensis from Africa were borrowed from the Natural History

An annotated list of parasites (Isopoda, Copepoda, Monogenea, Digenea, Cestoda and Nematoda) collected in groupers (Serranidae, Epinephelinae) in New Caledonia emphasizes parasite biodiversity in coral reef fish.

Abstract: Over a 7-year period, parasites have been collected from 28 species of groupers (Serranidae, Epinephelinae) in the waters off New Caledonia. Host-parasite and parasite-host lists are provided, with a total of 337 host-parasite combinations, including 146 parasite identifications at the species level. Results are included for isopods (5 species), copepods (19), monogeneans (56), digeneans (28), cestodes (12), and nematodes (12). When results are restricted to those 14 fish species for which more than five specimens were examined and to parasites identified at the species level, 109 ho

A new species of Parapleurocryptella Bourdon, 1972 (Isopoda: Bopyridae) from deep water squat lobster hosts of New Zealand with description of larval stages and transfer of the genus to Pleurocryptellinae.

Squat lobsters (Decapoda: Anomura) harbor a high diversity of symbionts, including many parasitic isopod species (Epicaridea: Bopyridae) that reside in their branchial chambers. We describe the bopyrid Parapleurocryptella poha n. sp., found infesting at least four species of squat lobsters from New Zealand. The new species displays morphological traits characteristic of the genus Parapleurocryptella Bourdon, 1972 but it is distinct from the two other described species, P. minuta Bourdon, 1972 and P. elasmonoti Bourdon, 1972, based on the form of the female head as well as male antennal segment

A new genus and species of parasitic isopod (Isopoda: Bopyridae: Orbioninae) from Chinese waters, with a new locality and host record for Orbione halipori Nierstrasz & Brender à Brandis, 1923.

Parasymmetrorbione bicauda n. g., n. sp. is described from Chinese waters infesting two species of Solenocera Lucas (Decapoda: Penaeoidea). The new genus differs from other orbionine genera by the following combination of features: a pronounced asymmetry of coxal and lateral plate development, biramous uropods, tuberculate lateral plates and a digitate internal ridge on oostegite 1. A key to the eight genera of the Orbioninae R. Codreanu, 1967 is presented. Orbione halipori Nierstrasz & Brender à Brandis, 1923 is also recorded from a new Chinese locality and a new host.

In water, no one can hear you scream: a new species of parasitic isopod from the genus Zeuxokoma Grygier, 1993 (Isopoda: Epicaridea, Cryptoniscidae) infesting a snapping-shrimp (Caridea, Alpheidae) from Brazil.

Isopods of the suborder Epicaridea Latreille, 1825 are obligatory parasites of other crustaceans, using them as intermediate and definitive hosts during their life cycles. All species of the family Cryptoniscidae Kossmann, 1880 are endoparasitic or mesoparasitic, and can be found as direct parasites of decapods or as hyperparasites of rhizocephalan barnacles infesting decapod hosts. Females usually lose all body segmentation, lacking antennae, pereopods, oostegites and pleopods, and their bodies have two portions, an anterior portion that is embedded in the host cuticle and a posterior one tha

The genome sequence of the tongue-biting isopod, Ceratothoa steindachneri Koelbel, 1878.

We present a genome assembly from a specimen of Ceratothoa steindachneri (tongue-biting isopod; Arthropoda; Malacostraca; Isopoda; Cymothoidae). The genome sequence has a total length of 3,927.82 megabases. Most of the assembly (98.71%) is scaffolded into 23 chromosomal pseudomolecules. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 29.61 kilobases. Gene annotation of this assembly on Ensembl identified 13,816 protein-coding genes.

Acaulide, an Osteogenic Macrodiolide from Acaulium sp. H-JQSF, an Isopod-Associated Fungus.

Acaulide (1), a macrodiolide with an unprecedented framework, was characterized along with its shunt products-acaulones A (2) and B (3)-from the culture of Acaulium sp. H-JQSF associated with the isopod Armadillidium vulgare. The spiro-linked 14-, 14-, and 6-membered cycles of 1 arise likely from iterative intermolecular Michael addition reactions. Biological evaluation in the prednisolone-induced osteoporotic zebrafish demonstrated that 1 is antiosteoporotic at 0.4 and 2.0 μM.

An evo-devo perspective on terrestrial isopod respiratory organs.

The evolution and diversification of respiratory structures enabled arthropods to colonize terrestrial habitats multiple times independently. One such group of ancestrally marine arthropods, the Isopods, successfully colonized freshwater and terrestrial habitats. The transition to land was facilitated by the evolution of novel respiratory organs on the abdomen, the pleopodal lungs, which either complemented or replaced the ancestral pleopodal gills. Here, we review the current understanding of terrestrial isopod respiratory structure evolution and development and explore its potential molecula
