Same-sex Pairs Retain Their Reproductive Capacity as a Potential Opportunity for Individual Reproductive Success in Termites.

In eusocial termites, successful pairing is an essential element of dispersal and distribution after the departure of alates from natal colonies. Two situations could arise during the pairing process: mixed-sex pairs and same-sex pairs. However, most previous studies focused on mixed-sex pairs, overlooking groups formed by same-sex pairings, especially potential fecundity (the total number of oocytes or ovarioles), oogenesis and the development stage of oocytes of females in female-female pairs, and spermatogenesis and testis development of males in male-male pairs. In this study, through expe

When termites mimic disease: Vertebral osteolysis and indoor scene alteration in the French West Indies.

Entomologically induced bone modification is increasingly recognized in archaeological and palaeontological contexts yet remains rarely documented in forensic casework. We report an indoor forensic case of extensive vertebral destruction most consistent with arboreal nasutitermitine termites, herein reported as Nasutitermes sp. (Isoptera: Termitidae) in Martinique. A largely desiccated human skeleton, discovered in 2025 inside a locked residence, exhibited severe osteolysis of cervical vertebrae (C3-C6) and the right mandibular head. The lesions displayed diagnostic features of termite activit

Diversification of pre-mating behaviours through temporal reordering of components.

Many biological processes, including mating behaviour, are structured as ordered sequences in which each step enables the next. Diversity of such processes usually arises through the addition or loss of components rather than through changes in their order, since reordering can disrupt functional integration. Here, we show that reordering of the steps associated with termite nuptial pairing can generate behavioural diversity. In most termites, dispersed adults shed their wings before initiating tandem pairing, as wings interfere with communication between females and males. However, we found t

Gonadal development of adultoid reproductive in subterranean termites indicates strong reproductive potential.

The fair allocation of reproductive resources between population growth and outward dispersal plays a crucial role in determining competitive advantage and ecological success of organisms within their environment. Termite colonies demonstrate flexibility in allocating their reproductive resources through wing polymorphism: with alates possessing fully developed wings for dispersal to propagate the colony's genetic material, while adultoids have floppy wings, serving a secondary reproductive to ensure stability and development within the natal colony. However, the extent of reproductive potenti

Substrate type and termite discovery shape decomposition at the dry end of an African savanna rainfall gradient.

Decomposition is the process by which dead plant biomass is recycled and made available again for uptake by other plants. It is largely mediated by microbes and soil invertebrates. Global decomposition studies have demonstrated that decomposition is primarily temperature-driven with rainfall playing a secondary role, although to date, all global decomposition studies have used a single substrate to measure decomposition meaning differences with substrate type may be missed. Here we explored the decomposition of wood, dung and grass along a semi-arid rainfall gradient (380-650 mm/year) at three

Beyond toxicity: Systems-level virulence of entomopathogenic fungi in termite social immunity.

Termites live in dense colonies where frequent social contact can facilitate pathogen transmission, but coordinated social immunity can also limit disease spread. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are particularly relevant to termite pathology because they infect primarily through the cuticle, using adhesion, enzymatic degradation, penetration, and internal proliferation to overcome host barriers. This review synthesizes current knowledge on EPF virulence in termites and argues that fungal pathogenicity should be understood not only as direct toxicity (lethal effects of pathogen-derived compounds)

Origin of eusociality in termites: was genetic monogamy essential?

A prevalent hypothesis is that 'strict genetic monogamy' was a universal prerequisite for the origin of eusociality in Hymenoptera and Isoptera. Termites, however, do not fit easily into this scenario, particularly since the sister group of termites, the wood-feeding cockroach Cryptocercus, was recently found to be socially but not genetically monogamous. Termites likely evolved from large, physically robust, obligately subsocial cockroaches in an ecological setting where nitrogen conservation was prioritized. The shift to eusociality can originate from such a starting point via sequential del

Screening and identification of viruses in termites: behavior-regulating roles of RcBsV and RcBV.

BACKGROUND: Termites live underground in a social setting having continuous contact with microorganism. However, there is no comparative study on virus diversity and relative abundance between termites, castes and body parts in termites. To address this gap, pseudergates of Cryptotermes declivis, workers of the Odontotermes formosanus, and workers, soldiers and alates of the Reticulitermes chinensis were used as experimental materials to perform virome sequencing, virus annotations and their relative abundance analysis. RESULTS: It was found that three termites showed different virome taxonom

Comparative three-dimensional jaw muscle anatomy of marsupial carnivores (Dasyurus spp.) and the termite-eating numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus).

Among marsupials, the endangered numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus) is the only obligate myrmecophage with a diet comprised strictly of termites. Like many other specialised myrmecophagous mammals, numbats have a gracile and highly specialised skull morphology with an elongated rostrum and small braincase. Myrmecobiidae is one of four taxonomic families within the Australasian marsupial order Dasyuromorphia, and to date, the muscular anatomy of any member of this group is relatively poorly known. We utilised microdissection and contrast-enhanced microcomputed tomography scanning to provide the fir

Extinct and extant termites reveal the fidelity of behavior fossilization in amber.

Fossils encompassing multiple individuals provide rare direct evidence of behavioral interactions among extinct organisms. However, the fossilization process can alter the spatial relationship between individuals and hinder behavioral reconstruction. Here, we report a Baltic amber inclusion preserving a female-male pair of the extinct termite species Electrotermes affinis. The head-to-abdomen contact in the fossilized pair resembles the tandem courtship behavior of extant termites, although their parallel body alignment differs from the linear alignment typical of tandem runs. To solve this in

Natural toxins for use in pest management.

Natural toxins are a source of new chemical classes of pesticides, as well as environmentally and toxicologically safer molecules than many of the currently used pesticides. Furthermore, they often have molecular target sites that are not exploited by currently marketed pesticides. There are highly successful products based on natural compounds in the major pesticide classes. These include the herbicide glufosinate (synthetic phosphinothricin), the spinosad insecticides, and the strobilurin fungicides. These and other examples of currently marketed natural product-based pesticides, as well as

Population density, species abundance, and breeding structure of subterranean termite colonies in and around infested houses in central North Carolina.

Pressure from subterranean termites is known to vary geographically across the United States, but there are few quantitative studies concerning the threat of structural infestation for any geographic region. We assessed the number and locations of termite colonies present on 20 infested residential properties in central North Carolina, where subterranean termite pressure is considered to be heavy. This was achieved by using microsatellite markers to determine colony identity of termites collected over 6-14 mo from mud tubes in structures, below-ground monitors, and wood debris in the yard. In

An entomopathogen-based small-RNA delivery system promotes the biocontrol efficacy against termites.

Entomopathogenic fungus-derived microRNA-like RNAs (milRNAs) have been determined as novel virulence factors that exhibit cross-kingdom RNAi effects on insect hosts. However, which factors and how they function in social insects are still largely unknown. Using the pathogen Metarhizium anisopliae and its social host Reticulitermes aculabialis, we investigated how pathogen-derived small RNAs mediate cross-kingdom RNAi to promote infection in social insect colonies. By using sRNA-seq, we identified 27 milRNAs outside the fungal cells. Among them, Ma-milR-4 was significantly increased in the resp

Feeding ecology and allometry underlie distinct axes of mandible and leg evolution in tropical termites.

Understanding how ecological pressures and allometry contribute to morphological evolution remains a central goal in evolutionary biology. We examined mandible and leg shape in nearly 100 Amazonian termite species using geometric morphometrics and phylogenetic comparative methods. This approach allowed us to assess how feeding ecology and centroid size of body parts contribute to shape variation while accounting for shared evolutionary history across species. We show that mandible shape varies with feeding ecology along a wood-to-soil (humification) gradient, with wood-feeding species exhibiti

Accessory gland protein regulates pairing process and oviposition in the subterranean termite Reticulitermes chinensis after swarming.

Swarming and pairing behaviors are significant to population dispersal of termites. Tandem running is a key process in pairing behavior of dealates to find a mate. Succinylation can lead to significant changes in protein structure and function, which is widely involved in metabolism and behavior regulation in many organisms. However, whether succinylation modification regulates termites' tandem running is currently unknown. In this research, we performed quantitative modified proteomics of the subterranean termite Reticulitermes chinensis Snyder before and after alate swarming. The succinylati

Insights into the Metabolomic Capacity of Podaxis and Isolation of Podaxisterols A-D, Ergosterol Derivatives Carrying Nitrosyl Cyanide-Derived Modifications.

Cultures of a termite-associated and a free-living member of the fungal genus Podaxis, revived from spores maintained in century-old herbarium collections, were analyzed for their insecticidal and antimicrobial effects. Their secondary metabolomes were explored to uncover possible adaptive mechanisms of termite association, and dereplication of LC-HRMS/MS data sets led to the isolation of podaxisterols A-D (1-4), modified ergosterol derivatives that result from a Diels-Alder reaction with endogenous nitrosyl cyanide. Chemical structures were determined based on HRMS/MS and NMR analyses as well

New record and diet of a poorly known frog, Amolops daorum (Amphibia, Anura) from Vietnam.

As a result of our field surveys, a new population of the Dao Frog, Amolops daorum (Bain, Lathrop, Murphy, Orlov & Ho, 2003), was found in Son La Province, northern Vietnam, and its identification was based on molecular and morphological analyses. To date, knowledge about the natural history of this species is scarce, including data on its dietary ecology. Using the stomach-flushing method, we analyzed stomach contents of 132 individuals (81 males and 51 females) of A. daorum. We found 501 prey items (458 invertebrates, one vertebrate, and 15 unidentified items), belonging to 11 insect orders
