Avascular necrosis of the jaws as initial presentation
of acute leukemia.

Leukemia is a malignant neoplasm of hematologic origin occurring from disorganized proliferation or increased life span of white cells. The initial manifestations of leukemia are generally signs of bone marrow failure, such as pallor, fatigue, fever, bleeding, and infection related to peripheral blood cytopenias. Few reports have described osteonecrosis, especially in the femoral head, as an initial manifestation of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. To the best of our knowledge, osteonecrosis of the jaw has not been reported as a first sign of leukemia. Here, two cases of osteonecrosis of the jaw

Recurrent keratocystic odontogenic tumor in the mandible: a case report and literature review.

Keratocystic odontogenic tumor is characterized by benign intraosseous neoplasm of odontogenic origin with high recurrence rates. Conservative or aggressive management has been suggested a method of treatment. Conservative approaches have some advantages in that they avoid adverse effects on the development of involved teeth and the jaw when the patient is young, although aggressive methods, including surgical resection, can be recommended considering the nature of the neoplasm. Here we report a case of a 7-year-old patient with a recurrent keratocystic odontogenic tumor treated by marsupializ

Maxillary African histoplasmosis mimicking malignant jaw tumour.

An account is given of an unusual presentation of solitary Histoplasmosis duboisii of the jaw simulating a malignant neoplasm. This report is of interest for two reasons; firstly, the rarity of such a presentation and secondly, the extensive search of the literature which has failed to produce another case. The rationale for our treatment is also briefly discussed.

Maxillary Intraosseous Plexiform Schwannoma: A Rare Neoplasm Radiographically Imitating an Odontogenic Lesion.

Intraosseous plexiform schwannoma of the jaw is exceedingly rare, with only one previously reported case in the maxilla. We present a case of a 27-year-old male who presented with a painless maxillary swelling. Radiographic findings reveal an unilocular radiolucent lesion mimicking an odontogenic tumor or cyst. Histopathologic examination showed a multinodular spindle cell neoplasm showing Antoni A and B patterns and diffuse S100 positivity, confirming the diagnosis of intraosseous plexiform schwannoma. Although rare, this entity can mimic an odontogenic lesion on imaging. Awareness of this po

Giant cell tumor of the mandible.

Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is a distinctive neoplasm characterized by abundance of multinucleated giant cells scattered throughout the stroma of mononuclear cells. Its importance lies in recognizing and differentiating the characteristic histology, which at times may mimic several other bone tumors and endocrine disorders ranging from locally aggressive giant cell granulomas to hyperparathyroidism to malignant tumors. The jaw bones account for less than 1% of the lesion. Ina literature search, we found only five cases of GCT of jaw bones based on the new criteria. We present a rare case of

Dental Management of Patients Undergoing Head and Neck Cancer Treatment.

Patients undergoing head and neck cancer treatment are prone to various orofacial complications, including immunosuppression, osteonecrosis of the jaw, mucositis, post-radiation caries, and xerostomia. Dental management can play a pivotal role in mitigating oral complications before, during, and after cancer treatment. This article identifies the most common neoplasms found in the head and neck region and their basic treatments as well as the sequalae of these treatments and the dental management of them.

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma of the mandible.

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) is a high-grade neoplasm that is usually located in the extremities and retroperitoneum. In the past, UPS was considered the most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults; due to improvements in diagnostic techniques, most cases have been reclassified as other lineage-specific tumors. Gnathic bones are rarely affected, and the clinicopathological characteristics of this neoplasm when diagnosed in the jaw remain to be better described. In this report, we present a rare case of mandibular UPS affecting an 88-year-old female who demonstrated a painful swelli

Giant cells mandibular lesion: surgical treatment with preservation of the dentition.

Giant cell tumors of the jaw (GCTJ) are common in the long bones but rare in the craniofacial region, with only 1% of cases occurring in the latter; they account for approximately 3% to 5% of all primary bone tumors and 15% to 20% of all benign bone tumors. The biologic behavior of central giant cell lesions of the jaws ranges from quiescent to aggressive with destructive expansion, and the clinical behavior of GCTJ of the jaws is variable and difficult to predict. A number of tumors that occur in the jaws contain giant cells but are not true benign giant cell tumors. These include aneurysmal

Solitary central myofibroma presenting in the gnathic region.

Solitary myofibroma of adults is an uncommon neoplasm that typically arises in soft tissue and subcutaneous sites in the head and neck, but rarely within bone. When encountered in the jaws, the lesions exhibit clinical and radiographic features suggestive of an odontogenic tumor or cyst as well as several other neoplastic conditions. Tooth mobility, displacement of teeth, and dramatic jaw expansion may be observed. Analogous to other sites of involvement, gnathic myofibromas are biologically indolent and show little or no recurrence following excision. In rare instances, however, the ability t

Ossifying Fibroma in the Maxilla and Mandible: A Case Report With a Brief Literature Review.

Fibro-osseous lesions in the jaw bones include fibrous dysplasia, ossifying fibroma (OF), cemento-ossifying fibroma, florid osseous dysplasia, and focal osseous dysplasia. OF is the most common fibro-osseous tumor that presents as a slow-growing well-encapsulated benign neoplasm composed of varying amounts of bone or cement-like tissue in a fibrous stroma well-demarcated from the adjacent normal bone. OF is most common in the jaw bones, with a predilection for the mandible. OF usually occur as solitary lesions and rarely as multiple lesions in a patient. We present clinical and radiologic feat

Squamous papilloma involving the mandible: A case report and descriptive literature review.

Squamous papilloma is a benign neoplasm that originates from the stratified squamous epithelium of the mucous membrane. Its principal etiological factor is human papillomavirus infection, with a predilection for manifesting within the oral cavity. Squamous papilloma predominantly affects regions on the palate, cheeks, lips and tongue. However, to the best of our knowledge, the occurrence of squamous papilloma within the confines of the mandible remains unreported hitherto. The present report documents a case of squamous papilloma involving the mandible who was managed at the First Affiliated H

Atypical parathyroid adenomas: challenging lesions in the differential diagnosis of endocrine tumors.

Atypical parathyroid adenomas represent a group of intermediate form of parathyroid neoplasms of uncertain malignant potential which show some atypical histological features that represent a challenge for the differential diagnosis with parathyroid carcinomas. They may occur as sporadic or as a part of hereditary syndromes. The molecular signature of these neoplasms is still unknown and the germline CDC73 mutations appears to be the most common anomaly in this setting suggesting that these cases might represent variants of the hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor syndrome. The identification of marke

Mandibular ameloblastoma: analysis of surgical treatment carried out in 60 patients between 1977 and 1998.

Ameloblastoma, a benign tumor of odontogenic type, represents 10% of all tumors of the jawbone. It is localized in the mandible in 80% of cases and in the upper jaw in the remaining 20%. In every case, the selection of the surgical treatment to be applied must consider some fundamental elements, including the age and general state of health of the patient, the clinicopathological variant, and the localization and extent of the tumor. In addition, it is necessary to evaluate whether the neoplasm to be treated is a primitive lesion or a recurrence. Although ameloblastoma has relative histologica

Multifocal Central Giant Cell Granuloma - A Case Report.

Central giant cell granuloma is a benign, aggressive neoplasm composed of multinucleated giant cells that almost exclusively occurs in the jaws though extra- gnathic incidence is rare. Multifocal CGCGs of the jaws are very rare and suggestive of systemic diseases such as hyperparathyroidism, an inherited syndrome such as Noonan- like multiple giant cell lesion syndrome or other disorders.Very few cases of multifocal CGCGs in the jaws without any concomitant systemic disease have been reported. This paper describes an unusual case reported to the Oral Surgery Department of Dr. D.Y.Patil Dental

Mandibular Myofibroma and Severe Trismus: A Complex Case and Review of Complications.

A female child was investigated for insidious onset of temporomandibular joint dysfunction and trismus in the setting of a mandibular myofibroma. Myofibromas, benign mesenchymal neoplasms composed of spindle cells, are rarely found in the oral cavity, most commonly in the mandible. These lesions are historically described as indolent with a high cure rate and minimal recurrence rates following surgical resection. The patient initially presented with concerns regarding snoring, retrognathia, and jaw ankylosis, as well as a history of trouble latching as an infant but without obvious physical de

Intraosseous Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Maxilla Mimicking an Odontogenic Lesion.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of salivary gland origin, accounting for approximately 27% of all salivary gland malignancies. While it frequently involves the parotid gland, intraoral cases show a predilection for the palate. Rarely, MEC can arise within the facial skeleton, where it is the most common salivary gland tumor to occur intraosseously. Intraosseous MECs of the jaws are extremely rare and often present diagnostic challenges due to their clinical resemblance to more common jaw lesions. We present a rare case of intraosseous MEC in a 52-year-old m

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome.

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome has as its hallmarks such diverse manifestations as numerous cutaneous basal cell cancers and epidermal cysts, palmar and plantar pits, keratocysts of the jaw, calcified dural folds, various skeletal anomalies, cleft lip and/or palate, and various other neoplasms or hamartomas. Inheritance is autosomal dominant. The etiology of all of the above findings appears to be a mutation in a tumor suppressor gene that also plays a role in normal embryonic development.

Solitary plasmacytoma of jaw bone: A case report and systematic review of fifty cases from literature.

Solitary plasmacytoma of bone (SPB) is a localized form of plasma cell neoplasm where jaw involvement is rare. Distinguishing SPB from other plasma cell neoplasms is critical for treatment and survival. Here, a case of SPB of mandible in an elderly female is reported. Histopathological diagnosis of plasma cell neoplasm was confirmed immunohistochemically with MUM1 and CD138 positivity and multiple myeloma (MM) was ruled out on performing systemic workup. Prognosis of SPB worsens when it transforms into MM. A systematic review was undertaken with the objective to determine the factors affecting
