INTRODUCTION: The American Association of Public Health Physicians (AAPHP) conducted two surveys to explore the value of general preventive medicine/public health (GPM) training and board certification to physicians seeking GPM jobs.
METHODS: The first survey reviewed advertisements in recent issues of four medical journals. The second surveyed physician registrants at the Prevention 99 meeting.
RESULTS: The first survey screened about 18, 500 job advertisements. Of these, 1427 (7.7%) met the study's GPM screening criteria. Only 145 (10.6%) preferred an MPH, management, or related degree. Fo

BACKGROUND: Suicide is one of the major health problems that imposes a heavy burden on the health system. Currently, there is a notable absence of review and meta-analysis studies capable of exploring a broader spectrum of occupational factors associated with dimensions of suicide. This study was conducted to investigate occupational risk factors related to suicide dimensions by systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHODS: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses have been used. The databases searched in this study included: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. The d

Clinical experience has often demonstrated the inadequate relationship between degree of injury and rehabilitation outcome. The aim of this study is to investigate the importance of different psychosocial factors in coping behaviour after lower back injury. 194 patients of three nationalities (Swiss, Italian, Yugoslavian) were examined, 70 in an acute and 124 in a chronic phase of injury. A semistructured interview, followed by a physical examination, was used to gather the needed information; a follow-up examination was done one year afterwards. Factors shown to contribute to poor outcome wer

This cross-sectional study reveals that a significant proportion (35%) of the sampled population of factory workers experienced measurable health problems in the form of anxiety, sleep disturbance, depression, somatic complaints and other clinical indicators of stress. Job stress and social support levels experienced by the group of workers judged 'sick' were significantly different from the control group, particularly so for employees in the lower levels of work hierarchy. In consonance with findings from the literature, job stress has a significant impact on mental health, with all the job s

OBJECTIVE: Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) is a debilitating injury that affects a person's ability to communicate and swallow. Although clinical aspects are understood, how UVFP affects a person's employment and job security is poorly characterized. This study aims to elucidate how frequently patients request job accommodations or experience job loss related to UVFP.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey.
SETTING: Thirty-four US tertiary care voice centers.
METHODS: We analyzed data from a prospective cohort of patients with UVFP recruited from 34 vocal Cord Paralysis Experience (CoP

INTRODUCTION: Employment is not merely a means of financial security. It is a key social determinant of health. The Connect to Work (CtW) programme aims to support people with disabilities, long-term health conditions, and other barriers to find, secure, and sustain meaningful employment. The CtW was launched in November 2024 as the commitment and investment in England and Wales to support the Get Britain Working Again white paper. The CtW programme in Greater Essex commenced in August 2025 and has since engaged several hundred individuals across the region. The primary aim of this study is to

The present study examined the efficacy of a comprehensive housing intervention (Ecologically-Based Treatment - temporary housing and supportive services) on the longitudinal co-occurring patterns of housing stability, employment, and survival behaviors among a sample of young mothers experiencing homelessness. Participants were randomly assigned to: (1) temporary housing + supportive services (n = 80), (2) housing-only (n = 80), or (3) services as usual (n = 80). Follow-up assessments were completed at 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-months post-baseline. Findings showed that both Ecologically-Based Treat

INTRODUCTION: Continued workforce participation may preserve later-life cognition, yet many Americans face job insecurity and instability in later life, with potential consequences for cognitive aging.
METHODS: Using Health and Retirement Study (HRS) Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol data (n = 2418), we applied gender-stratified sequence analyses to identify clusters of combined employment and job insecurity trajectories (1998 to 2014). We estimated associations with domain-specific cognitive scores and impairment status in 2016 using weighted, multivariable-adjusted regression.

BACKGROUND: Despite working in a challenging environment plagued by persistent personnel shortages, public sector midwives in Senegal play a key role in tackling maternal mortality. A better understanding of how they are experiencing their work and how it is affecting them is needed in order to better address their needs and incite them to remain in their posts. This study aims to explore their job satisfaction and its effects on their burnout, intention to quit and professional mobility.
METHODS: A cohort of 226 midwives from 22 hospitals across Senegal participated in this longitudinal stud

BACKGROUND: The Social Security Administration has a thorough disability claims process, though one goal is to process claims more efficiently. This pilot described the creation and trial of a web-based tool to assist this process.
OBJECTIVE: To empirically link the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model to the Occupational Information Network (O*NET) with a self-reported activity measure (physical domain).
METHODS: ICF Activity domains and item difficulty calibrations were obtained from a self-reported ICF-Activity Measure. Three work/disability exper

Persons with mental retardation who possess applicable adaptive skills are usually able to obtain jobs in labor markets. However, some persons who show high scores with social and prevocational skills are unable to obtain jobs and the reasons for their unemployability are unknown. Twelve subjects with mild retardation who failed to obtain jobs were evaluated for their social and prevocational skills at the Tokyo Metropolitan Rehabilitation Center for the Physically and Mentally Handicapped. The evaluation was performed using the Social and Prevocational Information Battery-Revised which was de

In a developmental center, a preemployment chest x-ray was required for all job applicants. We scrutinized the pros and cons of this practice through a review of the medical literature and our experience, and discussion with our colleagues. We concluded that such chest x-ray caused unwarranted radiation exposure, did not produce compliance with the tuberculosis laws, gave a false sense of security regarding workers' compensation risk management, was contrary to established occupational medicine practice guidelines, and was unnecessary and wasteful. We discontinued such chest x-rays. The purpos

BACKGROUND: Ensuring safety and wellbeing of all the minority populations of Pakistan is essential for collective national growth. The Pakistani Hazara Shias are a marginalized non-combative migrant population who face targeted violence in Pakistan, and suffer from great challenges which compromise their life satisfaction and mental health. In this study, we aim to identify the determinants of life satisfaction and mental health disorders in Hazara Shias and ascertain which socio-demographic characteristics are associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

INTRODUCTION: Health effects after long-term exposure to subway particulate matter (PM) remain unknown due to the lack of individual PM exposure data. This study aimed to apply the job exposure matrix (JEM) approach to retrospectively assess occupational exposure to PM in the Parisian subway.
METHODS: Job, the line and sector of the transport network, as well as calendar period were four JEM dimensions. For each combination of these dimensions, we generated statistical models to estimate the annual average PM10 concentration using data from an exhaustive inventory of the PM measurement campai

This study investigated job search patterns among American older workers. Data from the 2016-2018 Health and Retirement Study included 1501 individuals aged 50+ who were looking for jobs in 2016. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was conducted to identify job search patterns based on nine types of job search activities. Multinomial logistic regression was then used to examine membership in each class. Five job search patterns emerged from the LCA analysis, including No Ads, Ads only, Friends & Ads, Phone & Ads, and Agencies & Ads. Employment transitions were related to job search patterns. BACKGROUND: Many working parents in the United States are employed in jobs that expose them to challenging working conditions, including low wages, limited benefits, and unstable and unpredictable work schedules. A growing body of literature has documented the harmful impacts of unstable and unpredictable scheduling on workers and their families. We focus on the connection between parental exposure to such unstable and unpredictable scheduling practices and children’s asthma management. Although not all risk factors are fully understood, researchers have linked genetics, environment, and socia

INTRODUCTION: Many mental disorders especially chronic serious ones such as schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, are disabling syndromes and impact on patients' social and cognitive functioning, including work activity. Thus, affected patients may show a particular socio-economic vulnerability and need specific social security as well as rehabilitation interventions, including pensions or job-placements. In Italy, the Working Group named 'Employment and Social Security/Insurance in Mental Health (ESSIMH)' was founded in 2020 in order to collect research evidence on mental illness, employment, soc
