Using journal impact factors to correct for the publication bias of medical studies.

Publication bias of the results of medical studies can invalidate evidence-based medicine. The existing methodology for modeling this essentially relies upon the symmetry of the funnel plot. We present a new method of modeling publication bias that uses this information plus the impact factors of the publishing journals. A simple model of the publication process enables the estimation of bias-corrected intervention effects. The procedure is illustrated using a meta-analysis of the effectiveness of single-dose oral aspirin for acute pain, and results are also obtained for five other meta-analys

Jewels in the crown: The Medical Journal of Australia's 10 most-cited articles.

According to data from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), the most-cited MJA article is Cade's ground-breaking report on the effect of lithium in mania (1949; 888 citations), followed by Marshall et al's reports on the role of Helicobacter pylori in gastroduodenal disease (1985; 766 and 523 citations, respectively). Others in the "top 10" span decades and disciplines; all have a common grounding in Australian data of global relevance.

Virtues and Narratives in Medicine: An Analysis and Collection of Virtue-Illustrating Stories in Medical Journals.

This paper draws from a framework of virtue ethics and narrative medicine to present a content analysis and teaching resource of virtue-illustrating stories found in medical journals. As acquired dispositions, virtues are cultivated not merely by listening to lectures but through reflection, experience, role-modeling, practice, and internalization. One way to encourage such cultivation is to use narratives to illustrate moral virtues in action. With this in mind, we identified a literature-based taxonomy of 12 core virtues in medicine, selected a sample of 180 narratives published in medical j

[Comment on the two randomized clinical trials on acupuncture from Journal of the American Medical Association].

In June 27, 2017, there were two acupuncture clinical trials published in Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The conclusions were that electroacupuncture could relieve the leakage of urine of female stress urinary incontinence and that acupuncture with clomiphene or not could not improve the live birth rate of female with polycystic ovarian syndrome, compared with shallow insertion at non-acupoint combined with clomiphene placebo. The Youth Committee of the China Association of Acupuncture-Moxibustion held an academic salon about the above two trials on September 7, 2017. It i

Constructing queer mother-knowledge and negotiating medical authority in online lesbian pregnancy journals.

Medical interactions around reproduction are increasingly extending beyond the physician's office and onto the Internet, where negotiation with medical authority occurs in complex and dynamic ways. Recently, scholars have noted the Internet's potential for creating spaces where women can dialogue with and reconstruct medical authority, yet this growing body of work is overwhelming heteronormative. This paper thus interrogates how lesbian women use the Internet to challenge, deploy, and rework medical authority around reproduction while navigating the transition to parenthood. I draw from 17 on

Examining the 'psychopharmacology revolution' (1950-1980) through the advertising of psychoactive drugs in the British Medical Journal.

BACKGROUND: Many modern pharmaceutical products were launched during 1950-1980, as reflected in advertisements in the British Medical Journal ( BMJ). One of the first therapeutic areas to benefit from novel effective medications was psychiatry. METHODS: We examined BMJ advertising material between 1950 and 1980, including every other issue over six-month periods (October-March) in 1950/1951, 1955/1956, 1957/1958, 1960/1961, 1962/1963, 1965/1966, 1967/1968, 1970/1971, 1972/1973, 1975/1976, 1980/1981. Infection, contagion and causality in Colonial Britain: the 1889-90 influenza pandemic and the British Medical Journal.

The influenza pandemic of 1889 was the first truly global flu outbreak in scope. Characterised by high morbidity and low mortality, it spread rapidly across Europe and the rest of the world along trading routes. It reached mainland Britain in December 1889. The responses of medical practitioners in Britain and the British colonies to the pandemic were heavily featured in the British Medical Journal and reveal a confusing picture around causality, contagion and infection. Cases from the colonies (Cape Town, India, Australia, Samoan Islands, Hong Kong) as presented in the journal are explored in

[Advances in research of complementary and integrative medicine: a review of recent publications in some of the leading medical journals].

This article assesses the evidence for effectiveness, adverse effects and cost-effectiveness of complementary therapies, as reflected in publications in high impact factor medical journals during the years 2012-2014. The search detected 13 randomized controlled studies (RCTs) and 14 meta-analyses, which collectively assessed results of 191 RCTs involving the participation of several thousand patients. Pain was the major focus of acupuncture research in both clinical and fMRI studies, which demonstrated that the effect of acupuncture is beyond the placebo effect. In addition, RCTs supported the
