Septic internal jugular vein thrombosis.

Septic Internal Jugular Vein Thrombosis (SIJVT) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition which necessitates early clinical recognition and rapid administration of appropriate therapy. Although termed by some authors a "forgotten disease" in the antibiotic era, this entity is still present but frequently overlooked. Deep neck infections, Lemierre syndrome, central venous catheterization and mastoiditis are the etiologies in this series. The diagnosis of SIJVT utilized CT and Doppler ultrasound imaging. The treatment included aggressive abscesses, necrotizing fasciitis, mastoiditis).

[Percutaneous catheterization of internal jugular vein].

Percutaneous catheterization of internal jugular vein has been recognized as a valuable procedure during special conditions which need either a central venous pressure monitoring or a route for intravenous infusion either on a long term or short term basis. In our hospital we had 27 patients who had undergone 32 percutaneous internal jugular vein catheterizations over a period of 19 months. Patients' age ranged from 10 days to 13 year-old. Among these 27 patients, 20 were less than 1 year-old. Overall successful punctures were achieved in 87.5% of attempts. There was no case complicated with p

Traumatic internal jugular vein cannulation.

A 63-year-old man with acute myocardial infarction complicated by atrioventricular block underwent an insertion of a temporary electrode for cardiac pacing. The posterior approach for right internal jugular vein cannulation was used. A 15-gauge needle was inserted under the sternocleidomastoid muscle aiming at the suprasternal notch with a 30-degree posterior angle of entry. An hour later the patient started to hiccup. The hiccups were resistant to drug therapy and to cessation of pacing. A chest radiograph revealed elevation of the right diaphragm and hematoma on the right side of the trachea

Complications of internal jugular vein catheterization.

Percutaneous cannulation of the internal jugular vein has become a widely accepted method for monitoring central venous pressure, hyperalimentation, and rapid fluid administration. Although complications from this procedure have been rare, many unusual case reports are found in the literature. Three cases of otolaryngologic importance are presented. A revised technique of the internal jugular vein catheterization is described.

Percutaneous catheterization of the internal jugular vein.

Two techniques for catheterization of the internal jugular vein are described in detail. In a group of 108 adults and 54 children, catheterization of the internal jugular vein was attempted 168 times. Failure to achieve catheterization occurred 12 times. The success rate for the first 50 patients was 86%, but it increased with experience, and was nearly 96% for the remaining patients. Almost 90% of catherizations were achieved on the first or second attempt. The success rate was understandably lower in the children's group. Catheter malpositioning occurred infrequently (six times) and was most

Internal Jugular Vein Fenestration and Duplication.

The internal jugular vein (IJV) is considered one of the prominent veins of the neck. It corresponds to the continuation of the sigmoid sinus and joins the subclavian vein to form the brachiocephalic vein. A retrospective study of 200 computed tomography angiographies was performed at the Larissa University Hospital Radiology Department, where the IJV variant morphology was investigated. Three unilateral cases of IJV duplication were observed (0.75%) in three patients (2 on the left and 1 on the right side). One case of IJV fenestration was identified (0.25%) in one patient on the left side. I

Internal jugular vein thrombosis in a child.

Venous thrombosis is a potentially life-threatening condition with varied aetiology. First described in 1912 as a complication of peritonsillar abscess, internal jugular vein (IJV) thrombosis is a rare entity in children with very few cases reported until now. Among the leading causes of this condition are prolonged use of IJV for venous access and central venous catheterisation, acute mastoiditis and Lemierre's syndrome.1 IJV thrombosis can also occur as a complication of head and neck infections, but rarely appears as its first presentation. The clinical manifestations are often vague and am

Idiopathic External Jugular Vein Thrombosis.

UNLABELLED: External jugular vein thrombosis is a rare complication that, when it occurs, is usually secondary to cervical trauma, infection, venous cannulation or malignancy. By contrast, spontaneous external jugular thrombosis is extremely uncommon. We report the case of a 69-year-old woman presenting to the Emergency Department with a 3 centimetre neck lump, which had suddenly appeared on the same day. She did not have any other relevant symptoms. The patient had not suffered any recent cervical trauma or infection. There was no personal or familial history of thromboembolic disease. Physic

Internal jugular vein thrombosis with OHSS.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) includes ovarian enlargement and ascites. It is usually mild but can be, rarely, fatal. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is among the potentially fatal complications of OHSS. During pregnancy, DVT is more common in the lower extremities than in the upper part of the body, but OHSS-related DVT occurs more frequently in the upper part. Internal jugular vein thrombosis is considered rare, and duplex ultrasound is the appropriate examination for its diagnosis. We present a rare case of internal jugular vein thrombosis following OHSS. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

[Intracranial hypertension and jugular vein thrombosis].

BACKGROUND: Pseudotumor cerebri is an idiopathic increase in intracranial pressure, which commonly affects obese women of fertile age. The diagnostic criteria according to the guidelines of the German Society for Neurology are increased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure, symptoms of increased CSF pressure, normal results of CSF examination, no relevant medication and a lack of structural and vascular lesions in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). CASE REPORT: This article presents the case of a 39-year-old male patient who presented at hospital with visual obscuration and recently occurred dou

[High duplication of an internal jugular vein].

The internal jugular vein is an important landmark in most cervical operations. The surgeon should know the exact position and possible variations to prevent complications. We report on a duplicated internal jugular vein, which is a rare anatomic anomaly and discuss aetiology and appearance of this malformation and the possible affecting of the accessory nerve.

Lepromatous phlebitis of the external jugular vein.

Mycobacterium leprae (M leprae), the causative agent of Hansen's disease, is endemic in many areas of Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, South and Central America, the Pacific Islands, and the Philippines. The spectrum of clinical disease is dependent on the patient's cell-mediated immunity and might range from localized anesthetic patches or plaques to disseminated disease. If undiagnosed, progression with damage to the involved sensory and motor nerves might occur. Lepromatous vasculitis occurs most commonly in patients with severe disseminated disease. Vascular disease, as the initial presenting sig

Phlebectasia of left anterior jugular vein.

We present a rare case of unilateral phlebectasia of the anterior jugular vein in a 56-year-old male patient whose complaint is a neck swelling that appears during talking. Although in this age group the most common cause of such a mass in the anterior aspect of the neck increasing in size during any type of straining or Valsalva manoeuvre is a laryngocele, phlebectasia of the anterior jugular vein should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Doppler ultrasound and computed tomography are the most useful and non-invasive methods to use for the investigation. Treatment should be conserva

Fatal outcome of jugular vein cannulation.

We describe the case of a woman who had cannulation of the internal jugular vein for the placement of a hemodialysis catheter. The procedure was unsuccessful and resulted in a retropharyngeal hematoma, which in turn caused severe compression on a carotid artery that was already severely narrowed by atherosclerosis. This resulted in massive cerebral hemispheric infarction and death. During the course of hospitalization, ultrasonography, computed tomography, and angiographic studies were done. Cannulation of neck vessels in patients with bleeding diatheses must be done with caution, especially i
