A Case of Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus Syndrome With Kasabach-Merritt Syndrome and Heart Failure.

A 48-year-old Mongolian man developed bilateral leg edema after suffering from a fever for three months. He lost his appetite, and the edema gradually spread from the legs, becoming systemic. In addition, he had difficulty in moving. He had a history of being diagnosed with numerous venous malformations and Kasabach-Merritt syndrome when he was a child. On arrival, he had numerous venous malformations over pale skin, edema at each extremity, and anemic conjunctiva. Chest roentgen showed bilateral pleural effusion, and cardiac echography findings showed a left ventricular ejection fraction of 3

Transarterial chemoembolization for Kasabach-Merritt syndrome caused by hepatic angiosarcoma: A case report.

Hepatic angiosarcoma is a rare disease, and hepatic hemangiosarcoma with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS) is even rarer. Although there have been several reports about KMS caused by hepatic angiosarcoma, there has been no mention of successful treatment regimens for hepatic angiosarcoma with KMS. A 64-year-old female patient presented with right upper abdominal pain and multiple cutaneous purpuras for 10 days. Blood analysis revealed that hemoglobin, platelet and fibrinogen were significantly decreased, prothrombin time was prolonged, fibrinogen degradation products were increased. Contrast-enh

[Propranolol treatment in Kasabach-Merritt Syndrome secondary to congenital hepatic hemangioma. Clinical case].

Hepatic hemangioma is the most common benign liver tumor. It can be congenital or infantile with different outcomes and complications. The clinical manifestation varies from asymptomatic to severe conditions with heart failure, Kasabach- Merritt syndrome or compartment syndrome. Diagnosis depends on medical history and imaging studies, especially ultrasound and Doppler examination in experienced hands. Differential diagnosis is essential with other hepatic lesions, mainly hepatoblastoma. In symptomatic patients, propranolol emerges as the first line treatment with good results and low frequenc

Excellent outcome of medical treatment for Kasabach-Merritt syndrome: a single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS) is a rare but life-threatening illness. The purpose of this study is to report our single-center experience with KMS. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 13 patients who were diagnosed with KMS between 1997 and 2012 at Samsung Medical Center. Treatment response was defined as follows: 1) hematologic complete response (HCR) - platelet count >130×109/L without transfusion; 2) clinical complete response (CCR) - complete tumor disappearance or small residual vascular tumor displaying lack of proliferation for at least 6 months after treatment di

Successful treatment of an adult with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome using thalidomide, vincristine, and prednisone.

ObjectiveKasabach-Merritt syndrome is a rare disease that mainly occurs in infants and adolescents. It usually manifests as disseminated intravascular coagulation and severe bleeding, and is associated with high mortality. However, its low incidence and clinical rarity in adults mean that there is currently no well-verified treatment regimen for this disease. We report on an effective novel therapeutic regimen in a patient with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome.MethodsA woman with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome presented with a recurrent subcutaneous mass and disseminated intravascular coagulation, and was

Kasabach-Merritt syndrome in a child with upper airway compromise and spontaneous periorbital bruising.

A hemangioma that rapidly increases in size has the potential to trap platelets and cause a consumptive coagulopathy. We describe the case of an 18-week-old boy who was brought to a local emergency department with ecchymosis on his nasal bridge and medial epicanthi, as well as a subconjunctival hemorrhage. He was noted to be anemic and thrombocytopenic. Packed red blood cells and platelets were transfused. However, despite hematologic correction, the ecchymosis and petechiae worsened, and a mass became evident in the right posterior triangle of the patient's neck. Computed tomography demonstra

Mice with hemangiomas induced by transgenic endothelial cells. A model for the Kasabach-Merritt syndrome.

Inoculation of an established endothelial cell line from transgenic mouse hemangiomas (Py-4-1) into histocompatible mice induced vascular tumor formation at the site of infection with 100% frequency. Histological and hematological studies revealed that the mice developed hemangiomas with hematological changes similar to those found in the Kasabach-Merritt syndrome in humans, including hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenic purpura. Modifications in the red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, and platelet count were directly correlated with the size of the hemangioma. Thus tr

Successful combination therapy of propranolol and prednisolone for a case with congenital Kasabach-Merritt syndrome.

A male fetus was delivered by cesarean section with a large hemangioma on his right chest and thrombocytopenia. Clinically, Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS) was suspected, and immediately he was treated with daily prednisolone (PSL) 1 mg/kg and recombinant thrombomodulin without response. Additional propranolol (1-3 mg/kg per day) and increased PSL 2 mg/kg per day therapy successfully controlled his disseminated intravascular coagulation and decreased the tumor size without serious side-effects. No relapse of KMS was observed after cease of PSL and propranolol. Combined use of propranolol and c

Neuroembolization of metastatic Merkel cell cancer to the face for treatment of Kasabach-Merritt syndrome.

Kasabach-Merritt syndrome is defined as a consumptive thrombocytopenia in the presence of a highly vascular tumor. Multiple treatment options, including transarterial embolization, have been described. We demonstrate that transarterial embolization is a viable option in the treatment of a rapidly progressive and debilitating Merkel cell tumor metastasizing to the head and neck presenting with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome.

Vincristine and corticosteroids as first-line treatment of Kasabach-Merritt syndrome in kaposiform hemangioendothelioma.

BACKGROUND: Historically, patients with the consumptive coagulopathy Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS) have been treated with systemic corticosteroids as first-line therapy, but many patients do not respond. Recently, there have been increasing reports of the use of the chemotherapeutic drug vincristine in these patients. OBJECTIVE: To report a case of a newborn with a kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) of the right leg associated with KMS treated successfully with vincristine and oral corticosteroids. Hemangioma of the radius associated with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome: case report and literature review.

The Kasabach-Merritt syndrome of consumptive coagulopathy associated with massive hemangiomas is a potentially life-threatening problem in patients with a pathologic fracture of the osseous lesion. This can result in massive bleeding even after minor trauma. In such patients, operative management of long bone hemangiomatous lesions, including percutaneous needle aspirations, may be contraindicated, and nonoperative management may be preferable. Kasabach-Merritt syndrome must be suspected in patients with large hemangiomas with associated bone lesions, and appropriate coagulation studies should

Non-immune fetal hydrops with hepatic hemangioendothelioma and Kasabach-Merritt syndrome: a case report.

A premature infant presented with non-immune hydrops fetalis, a liver mass, thrombocytopenia, and hypofibrinogenemia. Histologic examination of the liver tumor showed an infantile hemangioendothelioma. The clinical features of this case can be explained by anemia, hypoalbuminemia, and coagulopathy. The association with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome, the pathophysiology of non-immune hydrops fetalis, and primary hepatic neoplasms of the neonate are discussed.

Consumptive coagulopathy associated with Gorham syndrome and subsequent Kasabach-Merritt syndrome during pregnancy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Gorham and Kasabach-Merritt syndrome are rare diagnoses that can complicate pregnancy by increasing the risk of pelvic fracture and consumptive coagulopathy, respectively. CASE: A 23-year-old woman, gravida 2, para 0101, with a prenatal diagnosis of Gorham syndrome from her previous pregnancy was admitted at 32 weeks' gestation with severe back and flank pain. Computed tomographic findings revealed multiple lytic lesions of the pelvis in addition to large hemangiomas. Similar to her first pregnancy, she quickly developed consumptive coagulopathy and required prompt preterm deliver

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (with Kasabach Merritt syndrome) of the head and neck: case report and review of the literature.

An infant initially diagnosed with a parotid hemangioma presented with stridor and thrombocytopenia. Diagnosis of Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma was confirmed with biopsy. The child succumbed to multi-system organ failure related to consumptive coagulopathy despite aggressive medical management. Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare head and neck tumor that may be mistaken for a hemangioma on preliminary diagnosis, which may lead to increased morbidity and mortality especially in the setting of Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. A platelet count may provide an early and important clue to the po

Successful management of an infant with a giant hemangioma of the retroperitoneum and Kasabach-Merritt syndrome with alpha-interferon.

Giant vascular neoplasms in neonates generally require aggressive medical or surgical therapy for treatment of complications. Steroids, chemotherapy, embolization, radiation, and surgery have all been used with short-term beneficial and sometimes unknown long-term side effects. A new modality of treatment, alpha-interferon, has recently been described. The majority of hemangiomas in children involute by 8 years of age. Occasionally, hemangiomas can endanger vital structures and are associated with a consumption coagulopathy and thrombocytopenia (Kasabach-Merritt Syndrome). These hemangiomas oc
