Wavefront excimer laser refractive surgery for adults with refractive errors.

BACKGROUND: Refractive errors (conditions in which the eye fails to focus objects accurately on the retina due to defects in the refractive system), are the most common cause of visual impairment. Myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism are low-order aberrations, usually corrected with spectacles, contact lenses, or conventional refractive surgery. Higher-order aberrations (HOAs) can be quantified with wavefront aberration instruments and corrected using wavefront-guided or wavefront-optimized laser surgery. Wavefront-guided ablations are based on preoperative measurements of HOAs; wavefront-optimi

[Myopia and glaucoma].

The question is whether there is an increased risk to develop glaucoma in co-existing myopia. The different kinds of glaucoma dealing with this problem are described. The highly myopic eye with increased axial length shows many structural changes. Especially the changes of the optic nerve head in a highly myopic eye make it very difficult to differentiate between a beginning glaucoma and a normal structure or to define a progression of glaucomatous changes. The visual field defects are often close to fixation and may reduce visual acuity and therefore the quality of life of these usually young

Severe Corneal Morphological Alterations after Excimer Laser Surface Ablation for a High Astigmatism.

We report long-term alterations of anterior corneal stroma after excimer laser surface ablation for a high astigmatism. The patient claimed progressive visual loss in his right eye (RE) during the last 3 years after bilateral laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK) surgery. His examination comprised visual acuity (UDVA and CDVA), slit-lamp examination, corneal topography and tomography, AS-OCT, and confocal microscopy. The UDVA was 0.1 in his RE and 1.0 in the left eye. The CDVA in the RE was 0.8. The slit-lamp examination showed a stromal lesion in the inferior paracentral corneal zo

Isotretinoin-related post-surgical interface alterations during sun light exposure: A case report.

IntroductionRefractive surgery, including procedures like photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), is increasingly common and generally safe, offering favorable optical outcomes. However, patients' anamnesis often lacks significant clinical information, such as systemic treatments for acne, diabetes, and polycystic ovary syndrome. Isotretinoin, a systemic treatment for severe acne, is rarely associated with corneal abnormalities.Patient and Clinical FindingsThis case report presents a 26-year-old female who underwent PRK for her myopic refractive err

Flap removal or flap preservation during LASEK surgery.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of corneal epithelial flap removal or flap preservation during LASEK operation on myopia and to determine whether there was any accrual of benefit in either approach. From March 2006 to March 2008, some 582 patients (1,164 eyes) who presented with myopia and myopic astigmatism were treated with corrective LASEK operations. They were divided into two groups: one group underwent corneal flap-preservation while the other had the corneal flap removed. Each group comprised 582 eyes, and the data accumulated were retrospectively analyzed.
