Dual Actions of Ketorolac in Metastatic Ovarian Cancer.

Cytoreductive surgery and chemotherapy are cornerstones of ovarian cancer treatment, yet disease recurrence remains a significant clinical issue. Surgery can release cancer cells into the circulation, suppress anti-tumor immunity, and induce inflammatory responses that support the growth of residual disease. Intervention within the peri-operative window is an under-explored opportunity to mitigate these consequences of surgery and influence the course of metastatic disease to improve patient outcomes. One drug associated with improved survival in cancer patients is ketorolac. Ketorolac is a ch

Safety Considerations in the Use of Ketorolac for Postoperative Pain.

BACKGROUND: Ketorolac use has significantly expanded for postoperative pain management since it first became available in the United States, primarily due to well established effects on patient pain scores and its ability to reduce perioperative opioid requirements. As an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase, ketorolac use has raised clinical concern including particular controversy regarding its potential effects on bone healing, postoperative kidney function and perioperative bleeding. OBJECTIVE: To review the supporting data from clinical studies addressing the safety of ketorolac use for postopera

Controlled trial of ketorolac in tension-type headache.

Intramuscular ketorolac 60 mg, meperidine 50 mg plus promethazine 25 mg, and normal saline were compared in acute exacerbations of tension-type headache. Forty-one subjects (30 females and 11 males) were randomized into three groups and evaluated by the McGill Short-Form Pain Questionnaire before treatment, and 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 hours after treatment. All three groups showed a significant treatment effect that persisted for the 6 hours of evaluation. Ketorolac treatment was significantly better than placebo at 0.5 and 1 hour by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Pain Rating Index, and b

Side effects of NSAIDs and dosing recommendations for ketorolac.

We reviewed the pathogenesis of the most important side effects of non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Short-term treatments for postoperative pain are not generally associated with gastric damage. Pharmacoepidemiological studies have shown that for ketorolac the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding was only important in older patients and when doses > 90 mg/day were used. Although NSAIDs cause platelet dysfunction resulting in prolonged bleeding time, these drugs do not affect clot formation. Therefore, NSAIDs should be used with caution in surgical procedures involving considerable d

Ketorolac-induced bronchospasm in an aspirin-intolerant patient.

A patient, in her mid-twenties, presented with "severe polypoid sinusitis" for sphenoethmoidectomy under general anesthesia. Upon preoperative medical evaluation, it was discovered that she was "allergic" to aspirin and suffered from stress-induced asthma. Before induction of anesthesia, the patient was administered intravenous hydrocortisone and two puffs of her albuterol inhaler to prevent a possible bronchospasm due to stress of the surgery or irritation from the endotracheal tube or other stimuli. The patient was maintained throughout the case with an inhalation anesthetic for its bronchod

Intraoperative Ketorolac and Outcomes after Ovarian Cancer Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Surgery is the cornerstone of ovarian cancer treatment. However, surgery and perioperative inflammation have been described as potentially pro-metastagenic. In various animal models and other human cancers, intraoperative administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) appears to have a positive impact on patient outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this unicentric retrospective study, we provide an exploratory analysis of the safety and potential benefit of intraoperative administration of ketorolac on the outcome of patients undergoing surgery for ovarian cance

Possible intraoperative anesthetic-sparing effect of parenteral ketorolac.

OBJECTIVE: Because the analgesic effects of ketorolac are equivalent to those of narcotic analgesics, we investigated the possibility that this non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug might also exhibit anesthetic-sparing properties similar to those described for narcotic agents. DESIGN: A nonrandomized, double-blind convenience sample. The treatment group received a preoperative dose of ketorolac 60 mg im 45 minutes prior to the induction of anesthesia. All other preoperative medications were identical. SETTING: Brooke Army Medical Center, a primary care setting. PARTICIPANTS: Six women requir

Atomized Intranasal Ketorolac Versus Intravenous Ketorolac for the Treatment of Severe Renal Colic in the Emergency Department: A Double-Blind, Randomized Controlled Trial.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Atomized intranasal (IN) drug administration offers an alternative to the intravenous (IV) route. We aimed to evaluate the analgesic efficacy of IN versus IV ketorolac in emergency department patients with acute renal colic. METHODS: We conducted a double-blind, randomized controlled trial on adult patients (aged 18 to 64 years) with severe renal colic and numerical rating scale pain ratings ≥7.0. They were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive single doses of either IN or IV ketorolac. Our main outcomes were differences in numerical rating scale reduction at 30 and 60 minutes.

Anaphylactic shock induced by intravenous ketorolac: A case report.

Ketorolac trometamol injection is the first injectable nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) approved for the short-term management of moderate to severe pain. As a non-opioid alternative, it represents a critical development for acute pain relief, particularly in postoperative and injury-related scenarios. Like other NSAIDs, ketorolac trometamol is associated with common adverse reactions such as dizziness, headache, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting, which are generally mild to moderate. However, rare but severe reactions like anaphylactic shock have been reported. This case report high
