Clinical competence of biopsychosocially trained physicians and controls.

OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare clinical observations and interpretations by physicians trained in biopsychosocial internal medicine (group A) and a control group (C) of physicians with no such special training. METHODS: A verbatim first-interview of a 36-year old woman, seen for consultation by RHA, was presented to both groups (A, trained physicians: n = 30, and C, controls: n = 29). The patient's symptoms included: shaky knees, strange sensations in the abdomen and chest, insecurity and dizziness. The symptoms had begun before her final nursing- exam and exacerbated on her mother's 60th b

Modality-specific and supramodal mechanisms of apraxia.

This study investigated the relation of apraxia to the nature of the stimulus which is given to elicit the gesture. Patients were required to perform a movement imitation test and to demonstrate the use of the same ten objects, once on verbal command, once with the object shown but not handled, and once with the object handled but not seen. One set of comparisons concerned the performance on two tasks involving the visual modality, movement imitation and use of objects presented visually. Although the majority of left brain-damaged patients either failed or passed both tests, there were at lea

Unraveling the neurophysiological underpinnings of social anxiety through body language: An ERP study.

OBJECTIVE: Body language plays a vital role in emotion perception, yet the involuntary neural mechanisms through which individuals with social anxiety process these signals remain unclear. This research investigates these mechanisms by analyzing visual components such as P3a, P1, and N190 within a three-stimulus oddball paradigm. METHOD: Participants were classified into high social anxiety (HSA, n = 31) and low social anxiety (LSA, n = 26) groups using the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS). The paradigm employed custom-designed distractors depicting positive, negative, and neutral body e

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) enhances recognition of emotions in faces but not bodies.

The polyvagal theory suggests that the vagus nerve is the key phylogenetic substrate enabling optimal social interactions, a crucial aspect of which is emotion recognition. A previous study showed that the vagus nerve plays a causal role in mediating people's ability to recognize emotions based on images of the eye region. The aim of this study is to verify whether the previously reported causal link between vagal activity and emotion recognition can be generalized to situations in which emotions must be inferred from images of whole faces and bodies. To this end, we employed transcutaneous va

Impaired integration of emotional faces and affective body context in a rare case of developmental visual agnosia.

In the current study we examined the recognition of facial expressions embedded in emotionally expressive bodies in case LG, an individual with a rare form of developmental visual agnosia (DVA) who suffers from severe prosopagnosia. Neuropsychological testing demonstrated that LG's agnosia is characterized by profoundly impaired visual integration. Unlike individuals with typical developmental prosopagnosia who display specific difficulties with face identity (but typically not expression) recognition, LG was also impaired at recognizing isolated facial expressions. By contrast, he successfull

Visual body recognition in a prosopagnosic patient.

Conspicuous deficits in face recognition characterize prosopagnosia. Information on whether agnosic deficits may extend to non-facial body parts is lacking. Here we report the neuropsychological description of FM, a patient affected by a complete deficit in face recognition in the presence of mild clinical signs of visual object agnosia. His deficit involves both overt and covert recognition of faces (i.e. recognition of familiar faces, but also categorization of faces for gender or age) as well as the visual mental imagery of faces. By means of a series of matching-to-sample tasks we investig

Clear signals or mixed messages: inter-individual emotion congruency modulates brain activity underlying affective body perception.

The neural basis of emotion perception has mostly been investigated with single face or body stimuli. However, in daily life one may also encounter affective expressions by groups, e.g. an angry mob or an exhilarated concert crowd. In what way is brain activity modulated when several individuals express similar rather than different emotions? We investigated this question using an experimental design in which we presented two stimuli simultaneously, with same or different emotional expressions. We hypothesized that, in the case of two same-emotion stimuli, brain activity would be enhanced, whi

[Dreaming of a psychomotrician in a medical-psychological emergency room].

The psychomotrician is a healthcare professional trained in mind-body approaches. They take into account sensoriality, motor skills, cognition, psyche and emotions in relation to the individual's environment and the expression of disorders. It  is an integral part of the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. For some years now, psychomotricians have been part of volunteer teams in medical-psychological emergency units, where they offer an integrative approach. Using the body and mediation as their working tools, they rely on non-verbal communication and body language to bring the patien

Can adding a standardized observational tool to interdisciplinary evaluation enhance the detection of pain in older adults with cognitive impairments?

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of chronic pain ranges from 40% to 80% in long-term care facilities, and it is especially high among older adults who are unable to communicate due to cognitive impairments. Although validated assessment tools exist, pain detection in this population is often done by interdisciplinary evaluation (IE), which largely relies on the subjective impression of health care providers. The aim of this study was to examine the agreement between the IE and validated observational pain tools. SETTING: We recruited 59 residents with limited ability to communicate. The pain behavio

Not on the face alone: perception of contextualized face expressions in Huntington's disease.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that Huntington's disease mutation-carriers have deficient explicit recognition of isolated facial expressions. There are no studies, however, which have investigated the recognition of facial expressions embedded within an emotional body and scene context. Real life facial expressions are typically embedded in contexts which may dramatically change the emotion recognized in the face. Moreover, a recent study showed that the magnitude of the contextual bias is modulated by the similarity between the actual expression of the presented face and the facial expre

The meaning and function of ritual in psychiatric disorder, religion and everyday behaviour.

OBJECTIVE: Ritual is a central feature of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and is found in other psychiatric conditions. Defined in a general sense, it is seen in the everyday behaviour of animals and of humans, in secular ceremonies, and in religion. This paper examines the various types of ritual. It considers the common features and differences. METHOD: Material from psychiatric, biological, sociological, anthropological and religious studies literature is reviewed and discussed. RESULTS: The term 'ritual' describes a wide variety of phenomena. These include the rituals of OCD and rang

Enhanced extrastriate activation during observation of distorted finger postures.

Hand and finger postures of other people are important body language cues that strongly contribute to the observer's decision about the person's intentions, thoughts, and attentional state. We compared neuromagnetic cortical activation elicited by color images of natural and distorted finger postures. The distorted postures contained computer-deformed joint angles and thereby easily caught the observer's attention. From about 260 msec onwards, extrastriate occipital areas of both hemispheres were activated more strongly by distorted than natural finger postures. We interpret this result as an

Kinematic and kinetic evaluation of the ankle joint before and after tendo achilles lengthening in patients with spastic diplegia.

Fourteen patients, at a mean age of 9.1 years (range 4.1-16.6 years), who had spastic diplegic cerebral palsy were evaluated before and after tendo Achilles lengthening (TAL). Follow-up (by gait analysis) after TAL ranged from 8 to 30 months. A Vicon motion analysis system with six CCD cameras and two AMTI force plates provided three-dimensional measurements of joint motion and moments. The TAL procedure resulted in normal passive dorsiflexion of the ankle joint with the knee at 0 degrees of extension and 90 degrees of flexion, reduced plantarflexion during swing phase, and reduced premature p

Education techniques for lifelong learning: giving a PowerPoint presentation: the art of communicating effectively.

Effectiveness of an oral presentation depends on the ability of the speaker to communicate with the audience. An important part of this communication is focusing on two to five key points and emphasizing those points during the presentation. Every aspect of the presentation should be purposeful and directed at facilitating learners' achievement of the objectives. This necessitates that the speaker has carefully developed the objectives and built the presentation around attainment of the objectives. The best presentations are rehearsed, not so that the speaker memorizes exactly what he or she w

Tibiotalar torsion: bioengineering paradigm.

1. Medial tibiotalar torsion is the most common disorder peculiar to mankind. 2. The pathogonomic findings are (a) an axial medially rotated and adducted distal third of the shaft of the tibia, (b) the plafond of the tibia with its mortise containing the "track-bound" talus, which is deflected strongly toward the tibial side, (c) an exaggerated midtarsal equinus, (d) ostensible restriction of dorsiflexion of the hindfoot against the tibia, (e) mild separation of the distal tibiofibular articulation, and (f) forward displacement of the gravitational axis to the naviculocunei-form joint. 3. Novel Approach for the Search for Chemical Scaffolds with Dual Activity with Acetylcholinesterase and the α7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor-A Perspective for the Treatment of Neurodegenerative Disorders.

Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, belong to the group of the most difficult and challenging conditions with very limited treatment options. Attempts to find new drugs in most cases fail at the clinical stage. New tactics to develop better drug candidates to manage these diseases are urgently needed. It is evident that better understanding of the neurodegeneration process is required and targeting multiple receptors may be essential. Herein, we present a novel approach, searching for dual active compounds interacting with acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and the α7 nicotini

Electrophysiologic characteristics of tremor in Parkinson's disease and essential tremor.

UNLABELLED: Tremor in essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD) usually present specific electrophysiologic profiles, however amplitude and frequency may have wide variations. OBJECTIVE: To present the electrophysiologic findings in PD and ET. METHOD: Patients were assessed at rest, with posture and action. Seventeen patients with ET and 62 with PD were included. PD cases were clustered into three groups: predominant rest tremor; tremor with similar intensity at rest, posture and during kinetic task; and predominant kinetic tremor. RESULTS: Patients with PD presented tremors with a

Affect regulation in alexithymia: an ethological study of displacement behavior during psychiatric interviews.

Displacement activities (i.e., self-directed behaviors such as self-touching, scratching, and self-grooming) are a reliable ethological indicator of increased emotional and physiological arousal throughout the phylogenetic scale. We hypothesized that, in alexithymic individuals, the failure to regulate cognitively distressing emotions might result in increased displacement behavior. The nonverbal behavior of 30 patients with depressive or anxiety disorders was video-recorded during psychiatric interviews and analyzed using an ethological scoring system. Before being interviewed, each patient c

Late-stage dementia and participation in therapeutic activities.

This study examined the participation and behavior of people with late-stage dementia during various therapeutic activities. Subjects were able to actively participate for 10 minutes or less 54% of the time. Caregivers were not responding to meet apparent resident needs 37.5% of the time. Active participation was significantly correlated with having more senses stimulated. In addition, as the length of resting time increased before a scheduled therapy, active participation significantly decreased. Subjects exhibited various behaviors during therapeutic activities. Behaviors were categorized as
