Practice day may be unnecessary prior to testing knee extensor strength in young healthy adults.

A practice session is common prior to strength testing. However, the benefits of practice have not been previously reported. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a practice session on peak torque, mean torque and between trial variability across three test days. We hypothesized that peak and mean torque would be higher and less variable the second and third test days than the first. Twenty-five healthy, young participants completed 3 maximal voluntary isometric and isokinetic knee extensions on three separate days. No difference in isometric torque was found between days 1

Precision pinch performance in patients with sensory deficits of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel.

To investigate how sensory symptoms impact the motor control of hands, in this study we examined the differences in conventional sensibility assessments and pinch force control in the pinch-holding-up activity (PHUA) test between carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) patients and healthy controls. CTS patients (n = 82) with 122 affected hands and an equal number of control subjects were recruited to participate in the threshold, discrimination, and PHUA tests. The patients showed significantly poorer hand sensibility and lower efficiency of force adjustment in the PHUA test as compared with the control

Longitudinal excursion and strain in the median nerve during novel nerve gliding exercises for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Nerve and tendon gliding exercises are advocated in the conservative and postoperative management of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, traditionally advocated exercises elongate the nerve bedding substantially, which may induce a potentially deleterious strain in the median nerve with the risk of symptom exacerbation in some patients and reduced benefits from nerve gliding. This study aimed to evaluate various nerve gliding exercises, including novel techniques that aim to slide the nerve through the carpal tunnel while minimizing strain ("sliding techniques"). With these sliding techniqu

The effectiveness of kinesiology taping on dysphagia in brain tumor survivors after neurosurgery: study protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial.

Dysphagia is a common complication in brain tumor survivors, either as a direct symptom of the tumor or a result of neurosurgery. With improved survival rates, the need for effective rehabilitation strategies is more crucial than ever. Kinesiology taping has shown promise in dysphagia rehabilitation for stroke patients, but its potential in brain tumor survivors is largely unstudied and represents a significant research opportunity. This pilot study aims to assess feasibility and gather preliminary data on the impact of kinesiology taping, in addition to standard dysphagia care, on improving s

Five-repetition sit-to-stand test: usefulness for older patients in a home-care setting.

The usefulness of the five-repetition sit-to-stand (FRSTS) test was assessed with older patients in a home-care setting. Records of 45 patients (> or = 65 years old) were examined for information on FRSTS test performance. 5 patients were excluded. 23 patients were unable to complete the test. For the 17 able to complete the FRSTS test, the time required was statistically significantly greater than age-stratified norms. For patients treated in a home-care setting, inability to complete the FRSTS test clearly underscores the test's limitations and the need for alternatives.

Geotherapy combined with kinesiotherapy is efficient in reducing pain in patients with osteoarthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with osteoarthritis (OA) suffer from a degenerative disease that causes several physical disabilities and pain. Despite the few studies involving exercise combined with geotherapy (a therapy using poultices made from earth materials such as clay or mud) for patients with OA, this subject is still under debate, as effect of the earth material remains unclear. The aim of this study was to compare pain, joint stiffness and disability in patients who underwent kinesiotherapy (K) or geotherapy combined with kinesiotherapy (GK). METHOD: This was a clinical randomized single-b

Electrokinesiologic measurement of trunk sagittal mobility and lumbar erector spinae muscle activity.

Additional studies to determine intratester reliability of electrokinesiologic (EK) measures related to trunk movement and low back muscle activity are needed. EMG activity and EK records of repetitive movements at both natural and maximal speeds were computer sampled and quantified among 22 nonimpaired subjects. Significant differences were observed between group means at different speeds and trials for both kinematic and EMG measures. Predictably, maximal speed testing resulted in higher levels of EMG activity when compared to natural speed testing. Intratester reliability of measures was hi
