Indications for surgery in Scheuermann disease are not well codified and remain rare, as the natural history of the disease is in most cases benign. In the immature adolescent, conservative treatment, such as bracing or casting, can be tried for moderate curves. For larger curves, or in the adult, conservative treatment is usually not effective, and surgery can be considered. Such indications are mostly cosmetic for large curves above 75 degrees. Pain over the deformity or in the low back may represent another surgical indication, especially in the adult group. The question of anterior release

Scheuermann's juvenile kyphosis may be considered a form of vertebral osteochondrosis. Although the etiology remains unknown, the ultimate effect is a disorderliness of vertebral growth in the growth plate cartilage. The biomechanical effects of increased kyphosis on saggital plane deformity, especially in a growing child, serve to aggravate this deformity.

Retrospective study. This study aimed to determine whether selecting Th3 and more distal vertebrae as upper instrumented vertebrae (UIV) affects the incidence of proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) compared with more proximal levels or among themselves. Patients who underwent surgery for Scheuermann’s kyphosis (SK) between 2020 and 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Individuals without a previous history of spine surgery and with a minimum follow-up of 2 year were included. A total of 34 patients were included, with 29 (85%) being male. The mean age was 17.67 ± 3.68 year. Patients with higher

BACKGROUND: Thoracolumbar junction (TLJ) is the transitional area between the lower thoracic spine and the upper lumbar spine. Vertebral compression fractures and proximal junctional kyphosis following spine surgery often occur in this area. Therefore, the study of development and mechanisms of thoracolumbar junctional degeneration is important for planning surgical management. This study aimed to review radiological parameters of thoracolumbar junctional degenerative kyphosis (TLJDK) in patients with lumbar degenerative kyphosis and to analyze compensatory mechanisms of sagittal balance.

This study investigated the impact of post-traumatic kyphosis (PTK) on the lumbar spine using a local Cobb angle of 30° as the cutoff point. The measurements included the local Cobb angle, lumbar lordosis angle (L1-L5), intervertebral space angle (IVSA), lumbar disc degeneration, and posterior wall height loss (PWHL). Patient characteristics such as sex, age, disease duration, American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) grade, fracture site, bone mineral density (BMD), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and visual analogue scale (VAS) score were also recorded. Patients were divided into two groups

BACKGROUND: For more than a century, odontoid process prolapse, which compresses cranial base structures, has been the hallmark of basilar invagination (BI). The angulation of the whole skull toward the cervical spine may be considered to contribute to BI and odontoid prolapse. The objective of this study was to evaluate the craniocervical angular craniometry of patients with BI compared with patients with Chiari malformation (CM) and normal subjects.
METHODS: Angular craniocervical relationships among midline magnetic resonance imaging scans from patients with BI, patients with CM, and norma

The natural history of Pott's kyphosis is different from that of other spinal deformities. After healing of the spinal infection, the post-tubercular kyphosis in adults is static but in children variable progression of the kyphosis is seen. The changes occurring in the spine of children, after the healing of the tubercular lesion, are more significant than the changes that occur during the active stage of infection. During growth, there is a decrease in deformity in 44 % of the children, an increase in deformity in 39 % of the children and no change in deformity in 17 % of the children. The cr

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review was carried out on 23 patients with rigid fixed kyphosis who underwent surgical correction for their deformity.
PURPOSE: To report the results of surgical correction of fixed kyphosis according to the surgical approaches or methods.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Surgical correction of fixed kyphosis is more dangerous than the correction of any other spinal deformity because of the high incidence of paraplegia.
METHODS: There were 12 cases of acute angular kyphosis (6 congenital, 6 healed tuberculosis) and 11 cases of round kyphosis (10 ankylosing spondylitis,

STUDY DESIGN: In this study, 26 cases of congenital kyphosis and kyphoscoliosis treated surgically were retrospectively reviewed.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical outcomes and surgical indications for posterior only versus anteroposterior surgery in the child.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Congenital kyphosis usually is progressive without surgical intervention. Current recommended treatment includes posterior arthrodesis for deformities of less than 50 degrees to 60 degrees, and anterior release or decompression, anterior fusion, and posterior instrumented arthrodesis for large deformities a

STUDY DESIGN: An evaluation of cervical kyphosis in diastrophic dysplasia from newborn to adult life.
OBJECTIVES: To discover the prevalence and natural history of cervical kyphosis in diastrophic dysplasia.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Typical findings in this rare skeletal dysplasia are sport-limbed short stature, multiple joint contractures, early degeneration of joints, and spinal deformities such as cervical kyphosis, scoliosis, and exaggerated lumbar lordosis. In diastrophic dysplasia, spontaneous resolution of cervical kyphosis has been reported, but so have severe forms causing medull

Confusion over dorsolumbar kyphosis and Sheuermann's disease has existed in the literature since the first recorded episodes in 1921. The present article delineates an etiology of back pain that is frequently seen in the adolescent population and is not to be confused with the painless fixed kyphotic deformity so frequently mentioned in the scoliosis literature. These patients with a painful dorsolumbar Sheuermann's disease may well have a traumatic herniation of the disk into the bony vertebral body. This type of x-ray and clinical finding should become familiar to all clinicians dealing with

On analyzing the results of observing over 100 patients the author supposed that the kyphotic position of two neighbouring vertebrae noticeably changed the conditions of the functioning of both vertebrae and of the disc lying between them. This was confirmed by the results of a theoretical study of the mechanical conditions created in a model of the vertebral column, as well as by some data of experimental studies described in literature, and the results of clinical and roentgenological examinations of 117 patients with a cuneiform variation of the vertebral body shape. It was found that under

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective randomized study.
OBJECTIVE: To introduce an operative technique that prevents proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) in Scheuermann disease after a segmental posterior spinal instrumentation and fusion.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: PJK is the progression of kyphotic deformity at the proximal end of a construct >10 degrees, and it can be seen up to 30% after posterior Scheuermann kyphosis surgery. After posterior fusion the biomechanics of the spine changes and the loss of motion at the fused levels is compensated by increased motion at other unfused segments. As a res

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine potential risk factors for post-laminoplasty kyphosis and the effect of postoperative kyphosis on neurologic function recovery.
METHODS: A total of 266 patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) underwent traditional cervical laminoplasty with a minimum of a 12-month follow-up period. The patients were divided into non-kyphosis (NK group) and kyphosis (K group) groups based on the postoperative C2-7 Cobb angle. Clinical and radiological measurements were collected preoperatively and at the final follow-up.
RESULTS: Of the 266 patients, 26 (9
