BACKGROUND: Streptococcus mutans is a major component of dental plaque, contributing to cariogenic biofilm formation and inducing dental caries. Attempts have recently been made to use postbiotic mediators (PMs) to prevent dental caries. This research evaluated the antimicrobial/antibiofilm activity of PMs derived from Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) and Lactobacillus reuteri (LR) against S. mutans in vitro.
METHODS: PMs were obtained from the Lactobacilli supernatants. The minimum inhibitory concentration, minimum bactericidal concentration, antibiofilm potential, and metabolic activity of

Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus plantarum are key spoilage microorganisms in vacuum-packaged ready-to-eat chicken feet (RTECF). This study explored the impact of single-strain inoculation with L. brevis andL. plantarum on the physicochemical properties, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and non-volatile metabolites of RTECF. The results showed that inoculation with L. brevis and L. plantarum decreased the pH, L⁎ value, and textural properties of RTECF while having little effect on TVBN, TBARS, a⁎, and b⁎ values. A total of 62 VOCs were identified across all samples, with L. brevis pri

Toxoplasmosis is an immunologically complex disease, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Although there are several therapeutic regimens for such disease, the majority of them have many drawbacks. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to improve the current regimen in an effort to achieve a well-tolerated therapy while also enhancing the host immune response. Famous for their immunomodulatory effect, Lactobacillus delbrueckii and Lactobacillus fermentum probiotics were chosen to be evaluated in this study as an adjuvant therapy against the virulent RH Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) stra

This study investigates the effect of feeding fermented milks with Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus and a mixture of both micro-organisms on the specific and non-specific host defence mechanisms in Swiss mice. Animals fed with fermented milk for 8 days (100 micrograms/day) showed an increase in both phagocytic and lymphocytic activity. This activation of the immune system began on the 3rd day, reached a maximum on the 5th, and decreased slightly on the 8th day of feeding. In the 8-day treated mice, boosted with a single dose (100 micrograms) on the 11th day, the immune response i

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus gasseri could alleviate alcohol-induced liver damage, behavioral changes, and gut microbiota dysbiosis in rats. And sought to better understand the role of Lactobacillus-mediated microbiota modulation in alcohol-induced liver damage.
METHODS: Male SD rats were first subjected to 1 week of ethanol adaptation, followed by 4 weeks of feeding with a Lindros alcohol liquid diet containing 6.2% ethanol to establish the ALD model. Subsequently, the rats received 2 weeks of either L. rhamnosus or L.

Pathogen-induced infectious diseases pose great threats to public health. Accordingly, many studies have investigated effective strategies targeting pathogenic infections. We previously reported the preventive effects of Lactobacillus plantarum ZS2058 (ZS2058) and L. rhamnosus GG (LGG) against Salmonella spp. in a murine model. Here, we compared the mechanisms underlying the preventive effects of these Lactobacillus strains in vivo. Notably, reduced C-reactive protein levels were observed with both ZS2058 and LGG, which suggests abrogated anti-infection and inflammatory responses. ZS2058 more

Candida albicans is the most important Candida species causing vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). We investigated the potential of the probiotic strains Lactobacillus fermentum MG901 and L. plantarum MG989 towards control of C. albiacns. Cell viability tests following co-culturing with lactobacilli revealed that C. albicans cells lost metabolic activity and were eventually killed. Further studies revealed that MG901 and MG989 had high surface hydrophobicity that enhanced its adhesion ability to epithelial cell. The MG901 and MG989 showed coaggregation with E. coli and C. albicans to affect their

Lactobacillus paracasei SLP 16 was obtained from liquor cellar mud, and it was analysed by genome sequencing on Illumina Hiseqq platform. Then the biological information of L. paracasei SLP16 was analysed by ExPasy (website), and the toxin safety of the strain SLP 16 was analysed by PSI/PHI in the virulence factor database VFDB. Through the second-generation DNA sequencing platform technology, the whole genome information of L. paracasei SLP16 was obtained, which showed that the genome size of the strain SLP 16 was 2·65 mol l-1 , and the GC content of the strain SLP 16 was 46·9%. Lactobacilli are the dominant members of the healthy human vaginal microbiota and represent the first defense line from pathogen infection, including vulvovaginal candidiasis. Biofilm is the predominant microbial growth form in nature, and the formation of biofilms inside the human body has important implications in health and disease. In particular, the formation of biofilm by members of the human resident microbiota is desirable, as it can improve microbial persistence and influence functionality. In the present study, we investigated the capability of 16 vaginal Lactobacillus strains (belon

Splenic abscess is relatively uncommon. Infections caused by lactobacilli, which are usually one of the constituents of normal flora of human gut and vagina, are also very uncommon. Here we report a case of splenic abscess caused by Lactobacillus paracasei. We performed a literature review for this rare entity. Immunocompromised status of the patient, who had uncontrolled diabetes, could have contributed to the pathogenesis of this rare disease.

Bacterial vaginosis remains prevalent and often refractory or recurrent. In this issue, Bloom et al. and Potloane et al. report clinical trial results evaluating three vaginal live biotherapeutic products containing different Lactobacillus crispatus strain combinations. Although the colonization findings are encouraging, optimization of doses, formulations, and treatment schedules is necessary.

Although the probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus LA14 is used worldwide, its effect on liver diseases remains unelucidated. Here, 32 rats were divided into four groups, gavaged with L. acidophilus LA14 (3 × 109 CFU) or phosphate-buffered saline for 7 days, and then intraperitoneally injected with d-galactosamine or saline. After 24 h, blood, liver, ileum, and feces samples were collected for liver injury, inflammation, intestinal barrier, gut microbiota, metabolome, and transcriptome analyses. Pretreatment with L. acidophilus LA14 alleviated the d-galactosamine-induced elevation of serum alani

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We aim to obtain a probiotic strain from Lactobacillus bulgaricus by testing its capability to decompose uremic toxins to provide new intestinal bacteria for the treatment of chronic renal failure.
METHODS: Original L. bulgaricus was cultured with the serum of uremic patients and then mutated by physical (ultraviolet) and chemical (diethyl sulfate) methods repeatedly. Using creatinine decomposition rate as an observed index, we selected the best strains which decreased the most concentration of the creatinine. We then tested its ability to decompose urea, uric acid, serum pho

The antibacterial sensitivity patterns of gram-positive, nonsporeforming, anaerobic bacilli variously classed as Lactobacillus bifidus, Actinomyces bifidus, or Bifidobacterium were studied by the plate dilution method. A total of 34 strains, mostly from human feces, was studied. Three species, B. longum, B. adolescentis, and B. bifidum, were represented with 11, 11, and 6 strains, respectively. The other six strains fell into four other species. Most strains of all types resisted 100 mug/ml or more of neomycin, polymyxin B, and nalidixic acid. They were somewhat less resistant to kanamycin and

The rise of antimicrobial resistance has increased interest in safe alternative therapeutic agents, including postbiotic mediators (PMs), which are sterile, cell-free, filter-sterilized preparations derived from probiotics. This study investigated the antifungal and antibiofilm activity of PMs derived from Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) and Lactobacillus reuteri (LR) against Candida albicans, an opportunistic pathogen implicated in oral infections. PMs were prepared from LGG and LR cultures. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) against C. albi

Mulberry ripe fruit (MP) is a popular berry known for its rich content of health-beneficial components such as anthocyanins and polysaccharides. While traditional Chinese medicine suggests therapeutic effects of mulberry fruits on diabetes, their high content of small-molecule sugars discourages diabetic patients from consuming them. This study utilized Lactobacillus plantarum CICC 24202 and Lactobacillus brevis YM 1301 to ferment mulberry homogenate at 37°C for 60 h. The fermented mulberry homogenate was freeze-dried to obtain fermented mulberry product (FMP). The content of small-molecular s
