A case report of co-isolation of Lactobacillus delbrueckii and Candida albicans from blood cultures of an elderly woman with diabetes mellitus.

The aim of this study is to describe a rare case of dual isolation of Candida albicans and Lactobacillus delbrueckii from blood cultures of an 86-year-old female patient. The patient, an elderly individual, had a medical history remarkable for diabetes mellitus, which was currently being managed with an SGLT-2 inhibitor. The patient exhibited elevated fevers, which were attributed to candidemia and bacteremia caused by Lactobacillus delbrueckii. The patient's candidemia originated from a urinary tract infection. The isolation of Lactobacillus delbrueckii in three sets of blood cultures was lin…

Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus 2038 and Streptococcus thermophilus 1131 suppress polystyrene nanoplastic transcellular permeability and internalization by intestinal epithelial cells.

The plastic is broken into nanoscale particles (nanoplastics) that are harmful to the human body. Nanoplastics orally ingested are internalized into various cells, causing adverse effects such as oxidative stress and apoptosis; however, methods for preventing nanoplastic internalization are lacking. By elucidating this method, it is possible to make a significant contribution to human health. Then, following previous reports that Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus 2038 and Streptococcus thermophilus 1131 ameliorated barrier dysfunction in the small intestine, we examined their effects…

Exopolysaccharides From Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus OLL1073R-1 Enhance Macrophage Bactericidal Activity Through IL-12-Dependent Macrophage-NK Cell Crosstalk.

Exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus OLL1073R-1 have been reported to exert immunomodulatory effects, primarily in antiviral responses; however, their role in antibacterial host defense remains unclear. Here, we investigated whether EPS enhance macrophage-mediated killing of Streptococcus pyogenes, a facultative intracellular pathogen, using an in vitro co-culture system with NK-like cells. EPS alone did not enhance the intracellular bactericidal activity of macrophages. In contrast, EPS significantly increased bacterial killing when macrophages were…

Postbiotics from Lactobacillus delbrueckii Alleviate Intestinal Inflammation by Promoting the Expansion of Intestinal Stem Cells in S. Typhimurium-Induced Mice.

Previous studies have demonstrated that L. delbrueckii plays beneficial roles in modulating the gut microbiota, enhancing the intestinal barrier, and promoting animal growth. Postbiotics have a similar or even superior effect in protecting intestinal health compared to probiotics due to their excellent stability, extended shelf life, and safety. However, the protective effects and underlying mechanism of postbiotics from L. delbrueckii in intestinal inflammation remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrated the beneficial impact of postbiotics from L. delbrueckii on intestinal health by estab

Single-cell transcriptomics reveals heterogeneous stress responses and Mg2+-mediated survival mechanisms in Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus during freeze-drying and storage.

Maintaining the viability of lactic acid bacteria during dehydration and subsequent storage remains a significant challenge. Here, we employed single-cell RNA sequencing to reveal the heterogeneous stress responses of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, identifying seven distinct transcriptional clusters across the liquid culture, freeze-drying, and storage phases. The dominant clusters in the freeze-drying and storage were not completely consistent, showing significant functional differentiation. Genomic stability may be important for survival during freeze-drying and storage, while …
