Assessment of psychotropic-like properties of a probiotic formulation (Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175) in rats and human subjects.

In a previous clinical study, a probiotic formulation (PF) consisting of Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175 (PF) decreased stress-induced gastrointestinal discomfort. Emerging evidence of a role for gut microbiota on central nervous system functions therefore suggests that oral intake of probiotics may have beneficial consequences on mood and psychological distress. The aim of the present study was to investigate the anxiolytic-like activity of PF in rats, and its possible effects on anxiety, depression, stress and coping strategies in healthy human volunteers. Acute and sub-chronic oral toxicity evaluation and gut microbiota modulation of indigenous Lactobacillus helveticus strains from Indonesia in rats.

Probiotics are widely used to support gastrointestinal health, but their safety must be evaluated on a strain-specific basis. Lactobacillus helveticus DLBSA201 and DLBSA202 are indigenous strains with previously demonstrated probiotic potential in vitro. However, their in vivo safety profile has not been fully assessed. This study aimed to evaluate the acute and sub-chronic oral toxicity of these strains and their effects on selected gut microbial parameters in Wistar rats. In the acute toxicity study, rats received a single oral dose of L. helveticus DLBSA201 or DLBSA202 at 2.5 × 1010, 2.5 ×

Research Note: The effects of a Lactobacillus helveticus ATCC 15009-derived postbiotic mitigating Salmonella Gallinarum colonization in commercial layer chicks.

This study aimed to assess the effects of a Lactobacillus helveticus ATCC 15009-derived postbiotic in mitigating experimental Salmonella Gallinarum infection. For this purpose, a sample of Lactobacillus sp. was inoculated in 2 different media, each containing different postbiotics (sensitized and nonsensitized). Both inocula had their antagonistic effect over S. Gallinarum tested through the spot-on-the-lawn method. It revealed that the sensitized postbiotic had a higher action potential over Lactobacillus sp. than the nonsensitized one (P < 0.05). Then, 48 day of hatch chicks were divided int

Production and transepithelial transportation of angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory peptides from whey protein hydrolyzed by immobilized Lactobacillus helveticus proteinase.

Lactobacillus helveticus LB 10 proteinases immobilized with sodium alginate were used to hydrolyze whey protein to produce angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory peptides. The generated hydrolysates were tested for ACE-inhibitory activity and for their ability to be transported across Caco-2 cell monolayers. Using a response surface method, we determined that a proteinase concentration of 7.55 mg/mL, sodium alginate concentration of 2.03 g/100 mL, and glutaraldehyde concentration of 0.39% were found to be the optimal immobilization conditions. Compared with free proteinase, the immob

Lactobacillus helveticus and Bifidobacterium longum taken in combination reduce the apoptosis propensity in the limbic system after myocardial infarction in a rat model.

Myocardial infarction (MI) stimulates the release of pro-inflammatory substances that induce apoptosis in the limbic system. Pro-inflammatory cytokines are considered as the root cause of apoptosis, although the mechanism is not fully explained and/or understood at this time. In addition, depression may induce gastrointestinal perturbations that maintain the elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. It has been shown that some specific probiotic formulations may reduce gastrointestinal problems induced by stress and the pro/anti-inflammatory cytokine ratio. Therefore, we hypothesised that
