The potential for lactose intolerance causes 25-50 million Americans and an unknown number of people around the world to avoid milk. Milk avoidance is a significant risk factor for low bone density. Individuals who avoid milk, due to intolerance or learned aversion, consume significantly less calcium and have poorer bone health and probable higher risk of osteoporosis. Lactose intolerance is easily managed by: (1) regular consumption of milk that adapts the colon bacteria and facilitates digestion of lactose; (2) consumption of yogurts and cheeses and other dairy foods low in lactose; consumpt

The Tswana and other black races of southern Africa have a high prevalence of the adult type of primary lactose intolerance. It is possible that nutritional status may affect lactose absorption, so that lactose malabsorbers may be less well nourished than lactose absorbers. However, such a poor nutritional status may have caused, or have been caused by, the lactose malabsorption. It is also possible that another factor, such as chronic diarrhoea, may cause both poor nutrition and lactose intolerance. A random sample of 92 Tswana pupils was taken from a school population of 486. Their heights a

Lactose malabsorption is not always associated with intolerance symptoms. The factors responsible for symptom onset are not yet completely known. As differences in visceral sensitivity may play a role in the pathogenesis of functional symptoms, we evaluated whether an alteration of visceral sensitivity is present in subjects with lactose intolerance. Thirty subjects, recruited regardless of whether they were aware of their capacity to absorb lactose, underwent an evaluation of intestinal hydrogen production capacity by lactulose breath test, followed by an evaluation of lactose absorption by h

Humans learned to exploit ruminants as a source of milk about 10,000 years ago. Since then, the use of domesticated ruminants as a source of milk and dairy products has expanded until today when the dairy industry has become one of the largest sectors in the modern food industry, including the spread at the present time to countries such as China and Japan. This review analyzes the reasons for this expansion and flourishing. As reviewed in detail, milk has numerous nutritional advantages, most important being almost an irreplaceable source of dietary calcium, hence justifying the effort requir

When lactose-malabsorbing individuals use dairy products decreased lactase activity and the subsequent reduction in hydrolysis of ingested lactose can result in gastrointestinal and gaseous symptoms (lactose intolerance). This article examines lactose malabsorption, perceived gastrointestinal symptoms, and dairy product consumption in a Tokelau Island migrant population in New Zealand. Questionnaire data were collected and lactose digestion capacity was determined for 58 individuals 15-71 years of age. Additional questionnaire data were collected for 137 Tokelau migrants, 18-50 years of age. B

BACKGROUND: Self-perceived lactose intolerance may result in adverse dietary modifications; thus, more studies are needed to understand the prevalence of self-perceived lactose intolerance and how it relates to calcium intake and selected health conditions.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to examine the effects of self-perceived lactose intolerance as it relates to calcium intake and specific health problems that have been attributed to reduced intakes of calcium and dairy foods in a nationally representative multiethnic sample of adults.
DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study in a national s

BACKGROUND: Diets low in fermentable sugars (low-FODMAP diets) are increasingly adopted by patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID), but outcome predictors are unclear.
AIM: To identify factors predictive of an efficacious response to a low-FODMAP diet in FGID patients with fructose or lactose intolerance thereby gaining insights into underlying mechanisms.
METHODS: Fructose and lactose breath tests were performed in FGID patients to determine intolerance (positive symptom score) and malabsorption (increased hydrogen or methane concentrations). Patients with fructose or lac

INTRODUCTION: Lactose malabsorption arises from lactase deficiency and may lead to lactose intolerance - gastrointestinal symptoms after lactose ingestion. Occurrence and severity of the symptoms are influenced by many factors, including the dose of lactose and the intensity of its colonic fermentation to short chain fatty acids and gases.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The hydrogen breath test (HBT) after 30 g or 50 g of lactose was performed in 387 children. Further analysis included children who had a positive HBT result. The HBT parameters were net hydrogen concentration in each breath and total n

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The absence of lactase in the intestinal villi due to mucosal injury or genetic factors causes undigested lactose to reach the colon where it is fermented. Lactose intolerance is diagnosed based on clinical symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain and flatulence, lactose hydrogen breath test (HBT), and lactose tolerance test. No Indian studies are available on the use of lactase supplements. The aim was to study the effect of lactase chewable tablets on clinical symptoms and hydrogen breath excretion in patients with lactose intolerance.
METHODS: This was a randomized, doubl

AIMS: Colonic metabolism of lactose may play a role in lactose intolerance. We investigated whether a 2-week supplementation of Bifidobacterium longum (in capsules) and a yogurt enriched with Bifidobacterium animalis could modify the composition and metabolic activities of the colonic microbiota in 11 Chinese lactose-intolerant subjects.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The numbers of total cells, total bacteria and the Eubacterium rectale/Clostridium coccoides group in faeces as measured with fluorescent in situ hybridization and the faecal beta-galactosidase activity increased significantly during supp

It is generally accepted that lactose intolerance is a cause of delayed recovery from malnutrition. To discriminate the true importance of this factor, the effect of dietary lactose concentration on "catch up" growth was studied on rats fed a protein free diet from weaning to 34 days of age and then refed "ad libitum" with diets providing different levels of Protein Calories (P%: 5, 11, 17 and 25%) and Lactose (L%: 0, 1, 15, 27 and 37%) for 4 days. Weight changes, daily dietary intakes and gastrointestinal disorders (GID) were recorded. The growth rate (GR) -g/100g rat/day- showed a direct cor

We observed recently that colonic fermentation of lactose might be a major factor in the pathophysiology of lactose intolerance. Proteomic techniques could be helpful in interpreting the metabolic pathways of lactose fermentation. The objective of this study was to explore proteomic methodologies for studying bacterial lactose metabolism that can be used to detect and identify proteins associated with the onset of intolerance symptoms. Differential expression of cytoplasmic proteins of Bifidobacterium animalis, Bifidobacterium breve and Bifidobacterium longum grown on different carbohydrates (

A non-invasive, interval sampling hydrogen (H2) breath-analysis test for carbohydrate malabsorption was used in a 3 year-old Guatemalan child with severe protein-energy malnutrition (kwashiorkor) and in this relatives: mother half-sister and step-father to examine genetic and nutritional factors in lactose intolerance in young children. Clinical lactose intolerance was present in the patient on admission, and lactose malabsorption, even of 0.88 g per kg of weight, persisted after complete nutritional recobly due to gastric retention of the substrate. The relationship between osteoporosis and lactose intolerance is unclear. This study aims to evaluate the association between self-reported lactose intolerance and symptom severity caused by lactose malabsorption and bone mineral density (BMD). A total of 496 American hip arthroplasty patients took part in this study. Information on BMD and socio-demographic factors were retrospectively extracted from medical records. BMD of the lumbar spine (LS), femoral neck of the operative hip (FNOH), and femoral neck of the non-operative hip (FNH) were measured via dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scans (

This research was conducted to evaluate the knowledge and purchasing behaviour of consumers regarding lactose-free foods. Study data were collected from 1882 individuals with the help of a questionnaire form. Attitudes towards animal welfare, healthy nutrition and gastrointestinal symptoms were also evaluated. The majority (86.6%) of the participants reported that they had heard of the concept of lactose-free foods before, but more than half (67.0%) did not report buying them because of their higher costs compared to regular products and lack of sufficient information. Not causing gas/bloating

Human adult-onset lactase decline is a biologic feature characteristic of the maturing intestine in the majority of the world's population. The digestion and absorption of lactose, the major carbohydrate in milk and also the main substrate for lactase, is often variable, a consequence of lactase levels, gastric emptying rate, and colonic salvage. Although commercially available "lactase" products alleviate symptoms in many lactose-intolerant people, a greater understanding of this variability in lactose tolerance could lead to interventions that reduce the rate of gastric emptying and/or incre

Some studies have shown that only A2 β-casein-containing milk (A2 milk) causes fewer gut symptoms in milk-sensitive individuals compared with milk containing both A1 and A2 β-caseins (A1A2 milk). However, in most of the previous clinical studies, the role of lactose in symptom generation has been largely overlooked. Partial hydrolysis of β-caseins during milk processing has been noted to influence gastrointestinal symptoms of sensitive individuals, such as those with irritable bowel syndrome. Currently, there is no clear conclusion about the factors behind gut symptoms in milk-sensitive indivi

Biological hydrogen (H2) production via dark fermentation (DF) offers a renewable pathway for energy recovery from biomass, but process performance is highly strain dependent and often limited by suboptimal operating conditions. The present study characterizes fermentation physiology and optimizes small-scale H2 production by the recently discovered thermophilic anaerobe Thermoactinomyces mirandus. Batch cultivations at 52 °C in anoxic serum bottles were used to screen carbon sources (glucose, fructose, xylose, arabinose, and lactose), nitrogen sources (yeast extract, casein peptone, casamino

We reported previously that consumption of one cup of milk (240 mL) per day produced negligible symptoms in lactase-nonpersistent (LNP) individuals self-described as being severely lactose intolerant. We hypothesized that such LNP individuals could also tolerate two cups of milk per day if taken in two widely divided doses with food, and that psychologic factors play a role in perceptions of lactose intolerance. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2 (MMPI-2) was administered to 19 LNP subjects self-described as markedly lactose intolerant (S-LNP), 13 LNP subjects who denied lactose
