Verbal-auditory agnosia and aphasia are the most prominent symptoms in Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS), a childhood epilepsy that can have sustained long-term effects on language processing. The present study provides the first objective investigation of music perception skills in four adult patients with a diagnosis of LKS during childhood, covering the spectrum of severity of the syndrome from mild to severe. Pitch discrimination, short-term memory for melodic, rhythmic and verbal information, as well as emotion recognition in music and speech prosody were assessed with listening tests, and s

We report a 27-year-old woman with chronic auditory agnosia following Landau-Kleffner Syndrome (LKS) diagnosed at age 4 1/2. She grew up in the hearing/speaking community with some exposure to manually coded English and American Sign Language (ASL). Manually coded (signed) English is her preferred mode of communication. Comprehension and production of spoken language remain severely compromised. Disruptions in auditory processing can be observed in tests of pitch and duration, suggesting that her disorder is not specific to language. Linguistic analysis of signed, spoken, and written English i

Landau-Kleffner syndrome (acquired epileptic aphasia) is characterized by language regression following normal acquisition of language skills, accompanied by epileptiform abnormalities on the electroencephalogram (EEG) with or without clinical seizures. Continuous spikes and waves during slow wave sleep may be seen on the EEG, but are not required to make the diagnosis. Structural neuroimaging with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is typically normal. We have evaluated 17 children (aged 2.4 to 10.6 yr) with Landau-Kleffner syndrome using positron emission tomograph

We reported 2 cases of Landau-Kleffner syndrome from Beijing whose clinical manifestations were very similar to ones previously reported. The onset of symptoms in these 2 cases was at 3 and 4 years of age, respectively, and both were characterised by unilateral focal epileptiform EEG discharges, without remarkable clinical seizures. One patient had normal SPECT study in addition to normal CT scan, BAER and VER results; the other had a family history of epilepsy. Since this syndrome may involve a primary brain disturbance responsible for both the epilepsy and aphasia without clear structural br

A case of a girl affected by Landau-Kleffner syndrome (acquired aphasia with convulsive disorder) is reported. The girl showed epileptic seizures and EEG abnormalities. At the age of 7 years 10 months they were followed by onset of aphasic symptoms accompanied with behavioural disturbances. By the age of 9 years she developed a severe verbal auditory agnosia and loss of spoken language expression, but was able to use reading and writing to communicate. This unusual dissociation suggests that spoken or written language can be affected selectively. The girl was followed up to the age of 14 years

We report four cases of acquired aphasia with epilepsy syndrome or Landau-Kleffner syndrome in three boys and one girl who were previously in good health. Along with the clinical picture, we describe cerebral arteriographic findings, which consisted of obstructive arteriopathy of small and medium size vessels in delimited areas. A specific cause of the arteriopathy was not found in any case. We discuss the treatment (corticosteroids and calcium antagonists) and the course of the patients. In front of the possibility of being isolated cases, we discuss the interest of performing cerebral angiog

Abnormal zinc metabolism in a 6-year-old male patient with Landau-Kleffner syndrome (acquired aphasia and convulsive disorder) is the subject of our report. We describe a significant decrease of erythrocyte and plasma zinc levels in the patient as compared with normal. Red blood cell zinc content is normally 38.5 +/- 2.7 micrograms/g hemoglobin v 16.5 micrograms/g hemoglobin found in the patient. Plasma zinc level is 94.6 +/- 10.4 micrograms/dL in normal in comparison with 50.4 micrograms/dL in the patient. Since the initial description by Landau and Kleffner, in 1957, of a syndrome occurring exclusively in children and consisting of aphasia, paroxysmal changes in E.E.G. and, frequently, epileptic seizures, 80 cases have been reported. The acquired speech disorder, sometimes associated with auditory agnosia, differs in symptomatology and development from the usual forms of infantile aphasia. The prognosis, based on the regression or persistence of the aphasia, is favourable in 60% of the cases and unfavourable in 40%. None of the various antiepileptic drugs is consistently effective. The cause of

BACKGROUND: A boy, aged 2 1/2 yr, experienced sudden deterioration of speech and language abilities. He saw multiple medical professionals across 2 yr. By almost 5 yr, his vocabulary diminished from 50 words to 4, and he was referred to our speech and hearing center.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to heighten awareness of Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS) and emphasize the importance of an objective test battery that includes serial auditory-evoked potentials (AEPs) to audiologists who often are on the front lines of diagnosis and treatment delivery when faced with a child experiencing u

Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS) is an acquired childhood aphasia associated with paroxysmal bitemporal electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities and, sometimes, clinical seizures. We report the case of a female aged 5 years 6 months who presented clinically with apparent hearing loss, deterioration in speech, and seizure activity over 12 days. The female had previous detailed speech/language assessments at 3 to 4 years of age due to articulation delay. LKS was diagnosed on EEG with bitemporal spike and wave activity during sleep. The patient was treated with high dose prednisolone 3mg/kg/day, in

The Landau-Kleffner syndrome consists in the association of an aphasia acquired during childhood or adolescence after a period of normal development, accompanied by epileptic fits and, sometimes, psychological disturbances. The appearance of the symptoms may not be simultaneous. The nature of this syndrome has been widely discussed and even the possibility of being a non-unitary syndrome has been considered. It may be possibly due to diverse etiologies, genetic or acquired (infectious). The relation between the aphasic, the psychologic and the convulsive symptoms has also raised controversies.

Epileptic encephalopathy with continuous spike-waves during slow-wave sleep (CSWS) is a spectrum of epileptic conditions best defined by the association of cognitive or behavioral impairment acquired during childhood and not related to another factor other than the presence of abundant interictal epileptiform discharges (IED) during sleep, which tend to diffuse over the whole scalp. It is part of the childhood focal epileptic syndromes, some cases being idiopathic and overlapping with benign rolandic epilepsy, and others being symptomatic of a structural brain lesion. We report one of the youngest and most intensively studied cases of Landau-Kleffner syndrome, with a follow-up of 5 years. The boy developed normally until the age of 18 months when he had two attacks, possibly epileptic. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was normal. Over the next 5 months he lost his six to ten words, did not engage with other children and became mute. When he was 34 months old a child-psychiatrist suggested a diagnosis of pervasive developmental disorder or developmental dysphasia. An EEG 3 months later showed abnormalities typical of Landau-Kleffner syndrome. His non-verbal abilit

The Landau-Kleffner Syndrome (LKS) is characterized by acquired receptive aphasia and EEG abnormality with onset between the ages of 3 and 8 years. This study presents neuropsychological assessments in 5 children with LKS. The aims were (1) to specify the neuropsychological deficits characteristic of these children; and (2) to clarify the nature of the receptive aphasia by comparing nonverbal and verbal auditory discrimination. Receptive aphasia was present in all children. Retardation, poor motor coordination, hyperkinesia, and conduct problems were frequent but variable. All children exhibit

Four children with Landau-Kleffner syndrome were studied over a six year period. They presented with acquired aphasia, epilepsy, and focal or generalized EEG discharges which were exacerbated during sleep. In addition, cerebral angiography demonstrated isolated arteritis of some branches of the carotid arteries in all cases. Computed tomographic and magnetic resonance images were normal. Nicardipine in a dose of 1 to 2 mg/kg/day, added to conventional anticonvulsant drugs provided effective supplementary control of seizures, of paroxysmal EEG discharges, and of language and behavioural disturb

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical presentation and treatment of 3 children with an Auditory Processing Disorder with an identifiable neurological cause: Landau-Kleffner syndrome. This classical syndrome is well recognized in pediatric neurology but the diagnosis is less well known to Pediatric Otolaryngology, Speech Language Pathology and Audiology services.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of three patients with Landau-Kleffner syndrome.
RESULTS: In all cases, pharmacological intervention led to clinical and electroencephalographic improvement, but all patients had long-term difficulty

We report 2 pediatric patients who presented initially with seizures followed by subacute language regression characterized by a verbal auditory agnosia. These previously normal children had no evidence of expressive aphasia during their symptomatic periods. Further, in both cases, auditory agnosia was associated with sleep-activated electroencephalographic (EEG) epileptiform activity, consistent with Landau-Kleffner syndrome. However, both cases are unique since the episodic auditory agnosia and sleep-activated EEG epileptiform activity rapidly responded to combination therapy with pulse benz

A 5-year-old girl developed recurrent prolonged episodes of severe oral apraxia, dysarthria, and drooling, similar to the opercular syndrome in children. Each episode lasted several weeks to > 6 months and was associated with exacerbation of epileptiform activity in her EEG. Electrographic status epilepticus during slow wave sleep (ESES) was recorded during three of the exacerbations. The EEG improved markedly when clinical symptoms subsided. Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) were not effective, although there was some improvement when they were combined with a ketogenic diet. A similar case was desc

Landau-Kleffner syndrome and related epilepsy-aphasia spectrum disorders are characterized by childhood-onset language regression, sleep-activated epileptiform activity, and frequently refractory seizures. This case report describe a boy with normal early development who developed progressive aphasia and non-motor seizures around age three, with electroencephalographic findings consistent with spike-wave activation during slow sleep, while neuroimaging and metabolic evaluations were normal. Standard antiseizure medications and repeated immunotherapy provided no sustained benefit. Genetic testi

A case of unusual Landau-Kleffner syndrome was reported. She was an 8 year-old girl and showed non-verbal agnosia, diffuse EEG abnormalities and convulsions. Her responses to both verbal and non-verbal sounds remained inconsistent and unstable. When a continuous spike-wave complexes on EEG was detected, she paid no attention to any sound in spite of her fair consciousness. Auditory brainstem response and magnetic resonance imaging of her brain were normal. Auditory agnosia was correlated well with EEG abnormalities, and valproic acid and clonazepam were effective for EEG improvement. After the
