OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The aim of this study was to analyze the phoniatric and respiratory outcomes of a subset of bilateral vocal cord paralysis (BVCP) patients who were all treated with unilateral endoscopic arytenoid abduction lateropexy (EAAL). EAAL is a nondestructive, minimally invasive glottis widening operation, which does not damage either the surgically treated or the contralateral vocal cord. Therefore, it does not impair the regeneration potential of the recurrent laryngeal nerve.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series.
METHODS: Ten out of 21 BVCP patients who were treated with EAAL showed si

Motoneurons innervating laryngeal muscles are located in the nucleus ambiguus (Amb), but there is no general agreement on the somatotopic representation and even less is known on how an injury in the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) affects this pattern. This study analyzes the normal somatotopy of those motoneurons and describes its changes over time after a crush injury to the RLN. In the control group (control group 1, n = 9 rats), the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) and thyroarytenoid (TA) muscles were injected with cholera toxin-B. In the experimental groups the left RLN of each animal was

OBJECTIVES: Persistent vocal fold motion impairment after recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury is not characteristically due to absent reinnervation, but often results from spontaneous aberrant reinnervation (synkinesis). We administered local neurotoxins to selected laryngeal muscles after RLN injury to determine whether aberrant reinnervation could be selectively inhibited.
METHODS: Unilateral RLN transection was performed in 24 male rats. Three weeks later, the denervated laryngeal adductor complex was injected with phenol, high- or low-dose vincristine sulfate (VNC), or saline solution.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury (RLNI) after heart transplantation has not been well studied. This can manifest as vocal cord dysfunction causing dysphonia. Previous research is limited to aortic, coronary bypass, and valvular surgery. Identifying RLNI after heart transplantation is important in order to more accurately detail complications associated with this major surgery.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study assessing 972 adult patients who underwent orthotopic heart transplantation between 2010-2019. Primary outcome was incidence of RLNI. Secondary outcome

Recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (RLNP) is an important and potentially catastrophic complication of thyroid surgery. Permanent RLNP occurs in 0.3-3% of cases, with transient palsies in 5-8%. A literature review and analysis of recent data regarding RLNP in thyroid surgery was performed, with particular focus on the identification of high-risk patients, the role of intraoperative identification and dissection of the nerve, and the role of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) and optimal perioperative nerve assessment. In conjunction with the review, data from the Monash University/Alfred Hospi

The permanent lesion of damaged recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) often manifests as an irreversible dysfunction of phonation and is the most common complication following thyroid surgery. The frequency of this complication ranges from 0.5 to 5% in different thyroid surgery centres and increases in case of both recurrent goiter and complete thyroidectomy due to thyroid cancer. The RLN lesion varies from irreversible, persistent and transient dysfunction with good prognosis of complete recovery. The time of RLN function recovery ranges from several weeks to two years (mainly 6 months). The aim of

OBJECTIVES: To observe the cases of superior laryngeal nerve injury along with summarizing and analyzing its clinical characteristics.
METHODS: A total of 14 patients with unilateral superior laryngeal nerve injury (SLN) diagnosed by laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) in our department from 2018 to 2020 were collected as SLN injury group. A total of 14 healthy subjects with normal laryngeal electromyography were recruited as normal group matched by age and sex. The etiology and LEMG of the SLN injury group were analyzed, and the video stroboscopic manifestations of SLN injury group and normal

BACKGROUND: Loss of the neuromonitoring signal (LOS) during thyroidectomy signifies recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury, which is one of the common complications, especially by traction injury. Transient intraoperative LOS means spontaneous recovery of nerve function during surgery or within 6-month post-surgery. Few articles discuss intraoperative recovery time and transient LOS, and there is no consensus on the risk factors for RLN traction injury and its recovery course; thus, we wanted to determine the maximum intraoperative recovery time.

OBJECTIVES: Following perioperative injury to a macroscopically intact recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), there are two possible intraneural injury types: 1) axonal injury, including disruption of axons, and 2) conduction block, only affecting the Schwann cells and the nodes of Ranvier. In this study, it was hypothesized that the functional outcome after RLN injury may depend on the type of nerve injury.
METHODS: Fifteen patients with acute postoperative unilateral RLN paralysis were prospectively studied. Electrophysiological examination (laryngeal electromyography) was used to differentiate b

BACKGROUND: Thyroid surgery has been associated with complications ranging from nerve injury to death. Improvements in techniques have reduced the mortality rate to minimum. Morbidity, however, remains a significant concern. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury and duration of recovery following transient recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, during thyroid surgery.
METHODS: This prospective, observational study was carried out in the Surgical Department of Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi, from January 2000 to December 2005. All patie

BACKGROUND: Injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve is a well-recognized complication of thyroid surgery. Injury to the superior laryngeal nerve is less documented, perhaps due to the difficulty in recognizing its manifestations. This study was designed to document the incidence of injury to the superior laryngeal nerve in a series of patients who underwent thyroidectomy.
METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients with thyroidectomy during a 9-month period underwent evaluation for superior laryngeal nerve injury 3 months postoperatively. Methods for evaluation included laryngeal videostroboscopy, l

BACKGROUND: We performed a prospective analysis on voice and swallowing alterations following total thyroidectomy (TT), in the absence of recurrent nerve injury.
METHODS: Patients aged 21 to 65 years undergoing TT, in the absence of laryngeal/pulmonary disease, previous neck surgery, or malignant diseases, were subjected to videostrobolaryngoscopy (VSL), acoustic voice analysis (AVA), and maximum phonation time (MPT) tests preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively. Voice impairment scores (VIS) and swallowing impairment scores (SIS) were obtained preoperatively, and at 1 week, 1 month, and

With the popular use of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA), recurrent laryngeal nerve injury associated with the LMA, which might cause serious complications, has recently been reported. The true mechanism, however, remains unclear, which makes effective prevention and treatment of this disorder difficult. On the basis of the anatomical relationship of the laryngopharynx and the laryngeal mask and the progressive recovery in most reported cases, we hypothesize that demyelinating neuropraxia resulting from direct mechanical compression contributes to the recurrent nerve injury associated with the

Following recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury, recovery results in poor functional restitution of the paralyzed vocal fold. Netrin-1 has been found to be upregulated in the rat posterior cricoarytenoid muscle (PCA) during nerve regeneration. We evaluated the effect of ectopic Netrin-1 in the PCA during RLN reinnervation. The right RLN was transected and Netrin-1 was injected into the PCA (2.5, 5, 10, 15, 20μg/ml). At 7 days post injury fluorescent retrograde tracer was injected into the PCA and Thyroarytenoid (TA) muscles. At 9 days tissues were harvested. Immunostaining showed reinnervatio

Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve (RLN) injury is a complication in neck surgery. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of primary suture repair with melatonin treatment on nerve regeneration after RLN damage. After the RLN damage, nerve repair was performed in the first and fourth groups. The third and fourth groups were given intraperitoneal melatonin therapy daily for six weeks. EMG was applied to all subjects and vocal cord movements were evaluated endoscopically. At the end of the sixth week, all subjects were sacrificed, and their larynx were examinedhistologically. Vocal cord paralysi
