Central topography of anterior lateral line nerve projections in the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus.

Electroreception evolved in the catfishes probably as a specialization of the mechanosensory lateral line system. Fibers of the anterior lateral line nerve in catfishes innervate electrosensory ampullary organs and mechanosensory neuromasts of the head lateral line system. The purpose of this study is to determine the projection patterns of the major principal branches of the ALLN and to investigate the topography within the various nuclei of the terminal fields of these different branches. Fibers of the superficial ophthalmic, buccal and hyomandibular branches of the anterior lateral line ner

Heterogeneity and dynamics of lateral line afferent innervation during development in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

The lateral line system of larval zebrafish is emerging as a model to study a range of topics in neurobiology, from hair cell regeneration to sensory processing. However, despite numerous studies detailing the patterning and development of lateral line neuromasts, little is known about the organization of their connections to afferent neurons and targets in the hindbrain. We found that as fish grow and neuromasts proliferate over the body surface, the number of afferent neurons increases linearly. The number of afferents innervating certain neuromasts increases over time, while it decreases fo

A hydrodynamic sensory antenna used by killifish for nocturnal hunting.

The perception of sensory stimuli by an animal requires several steps, commencing with the capture of stimulus energy by an antenna that, as the interface between the physical world and the nervous system, modifies the stimulus in ways that enhance the animal's perception. The mammalian external ear, for example, collects sound and spectrally alters it to increase sensitivity and improve the detection of directionality. In view of the morphological diversity of the lateral-line system across species and its accessibility to observation and experimental intervention, we sought to investigate th

Determination of object position, vortex shedding frequency and flow velocity using artificial lateral line canals.

The lateral line system of fish consists of superficial neuromasts, and neuromasts embedded in lateral line canals. Lateral line neuromasts allow fish to sense both minute water motions and pressure gradients, thereby enabling them to detect predators and prey or to recognize and discriminate stationary objects while passing them. With the aid of the lateral line, fish can also sense vortices caused by an upstream object or by undulatory swimming movements of fish. We show here that artificial lateral line canals equipped with optical flow sensors can be used to detect the water motions genera

Chemical Ototoxicity of the Fish Inner Ear and Lateral Line.

Hair cell-driven mechanosensory systems are crucial for successful execution of a number of behaviors in fishes, and have emerged as good models for exploring questions relevant to human hearing. This review focuses on ototoxic effects in the inner ear and lateral line system of fishes. We specifically examine studies where chemical ototoxins such as aminoglycoside antibiotics have been employed as tools to disable the lateral line. Lateral line ablation results in alterations to feeding behavior and orientation to water current in a variety of species. However, neither behavior is abolished i

Sensory-Skeletal Integration Underlies Diverse Bone Fusion Patterns in a Complex Demography of Cavefish.

Over the course of development, sensory systems must integrate specialized cells and tissues to generate a functional unit. A robust example of this type of integration is the lateral line, a mechanosensory system in fishes and amphibians that senses changes in water movement. Over the past century, numerous reports noted that the principal organs of the lateral line-neuromasts-co-localize to the position of ossification centers for bones of the facial skeleton. More recent work in the freshwater model system, Astyanax mexicanus, revealed facial bones of the suborbital complex frequently fuse

Sublethal effects of methylmercury on lateral line sensory and ion-regulatory functions in zebrafish embryos.

Methylmercury can interfere with the normal functioning of the nervous system, causing a variety of behavioral and physiological changes in fish. However, the influence of MeHg on the lateral line sensory and ion-regulatory functions of fish is not clear. Zebrafish embryos were utilized as a model to address this question. After exposure to water-borne MeHg (5, 10, 50, or 100 ppb) for 96 h (4-100 h post-fertilization), the survival rate declined by ca. 50 % at 100 ppb. However, MeHg at sublethal concentrations delayed hatching and decreased heart rates and body length. As to effects on the lat

Hydrodynamic model of fish orientation in a channel flow.

For over a century, scientists have sought to understand how fish orient against an incoming flow, even without visual and flow cues. Here, we elucidate a potential hydrodynamic mechanism of rheotaxis through the study of the bidirectional coupling between fish and the surrounding fluid. By modeling a fish as a vortex dipole in an infinite channel with an imposed background flow, we establish a planar dynamical system for the cross-stream coordinate and orientation. The system dynamics captures the existence of a critical flow speed for fish to successfully orient while performing cross-stream

In vivo investigation of mitochondria in lateral line afferent neurons and hair cells.

To process sensory stimuli, intense energy demands are placed on hair cells and primary afferents. Hair cells must both mechanotransduce and maintain pools of synaptic vesicles for neurotransmission. Furthermore, both hair cells and afferent neurons must continually maintain a polarized membrane to propagate sensory information. These processes are energy demanding and therefore both cell types are critically reliant on mitochondrial health and function for their activity and maintenance. Based on these demands, it is not surprising that deficits in mitochondrial health can negatively impact t

Optogenetic interrogation of the zebrafish lateral line reveals brain-wide neural circuits involved in pattern separation.

An animal's ability to interact with its environment relies on the brain's capacity to distinguish between patterns of sensory information. To investigate this, we used the posterior lateral line system of larval zebrafish, composed of mechanosensory neuromasts innervated by neurons from the posterior lateral line ganglion. Using single-neuromast optogenetic stimulation and whole-brain calcium imaging, we developed a precise and flexible approach to examine sensory processing. Stimulating individual neuromasts revealed that second-order circuits show diverse selectivity despite lacking topogra

Emergency transorbital ventricular puncture: refinement of external landmarks.

OBJECT: Emergency access to the ventricular system is sometimes necessary for the treatment of raised intracranial pressure with ensuing herniation. One procedure described in the literature is a transorbital approach performed using a spinal needle. Because past publications have been case reports with minimal definition of external landmarks, the present study was performed. METHODS: Five adult cadavers (10 sides) underwent transorbital puncture of the lateral ventricles. This approach was performed following an axial section through the cranium that exposed the lateral ventricular system.

Tadpoles rely on mechanosensory stimuli for communication when visual capabilities are poor.

The ways in which animals sense the world changes throughout development. For example, young of many species have limited visual capabilities, but still make social decisions, likely based on information gathered through other sensory modalities. Poison frog tadpoles display complex social behaviors that have been suggested to rely on vision despite a century of research indicating tadpoles have poorly-developed visual systems relative to adults. Alternatively, other sensory modalities, such as the lateral line system, are functional at hatching in frogs and may guide social decisions while ot

Morphology and hydro-sensory role of superficial neuromasts in schooling behaviour of yellow-eyed mullet (Aldrichetta forsteri).

The lateral line system is a mechanosensory organ found in all fish species and located on the skin or in subdermal canals. The basic functional units are superficial and canal neuromasts, which are involved in hydrodynamic sensing and cohesion in schooling fish. Yellow-eyed mullet (Aldrichetta forsteri) are an obligate schooling species found commonly in shallow coastal areas of New Zealand and Australia. Schooling is a fundamental part of their behavioural repertoire, yet little is known about the structure or functionality of the lateral line in this species. We used scanning electron micro

Effects of Copper on the Neuromasts of Xenopus Laevis.

Fish and aquatic amphibians possess neuromasts on the surface of their body that constitute the lateral line, a sensory system used to detect water displacement. Copper is known to inactivate the neuromast organs of this system. Copper-induced neuromast loss in African clawed frogs, Xenopus laevis, was examined by exposing Nieuwkoop-Faber stage 54-55 larvae to copper concentrations of 0, 100, 200, 300, and 400 µg/L for 96 h, followed by an examination of neuromast counts, staining intensity, and behavioral responses. Neuromasts were counted using a novel imaging method across four different bo

Thyroid hormone coordinates developmental trajectories but does not underlie developmental truncation in danionins.

BACKGROUND: Differences in postembryonic developmental trajectories can profoundly alter adult phenotypes and life histories. Thyroid hormone (TH) regulates metamorphosis in many vertebrate taxa with multiphasic ecologies, and alterations to TH metabolism underlie notable cases of paedomorphosis in amphibians. We tested the requirement for TH in multiple postembryonic developmental processes in zebrafish, which has a monophasic ecology, and asked if TH production was compromised in paedomorphic Danionella. RESULTS: We showed that TH regulates allometric growth in juvenile zebrafish, and inhib

Canal neuromasts enhance foraging in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Aquatic animals commonly sense flow using superficial neuromasts (SNs), which are receptors that extend from the body's surface. The lateral line of fishes is unique among these systems because it additionally possesses receptors, the canal neuromasts (CNs), that are recessed within a channel. The lateral line has inspired the development of engineered sensors and concepts in the analysis of flow fields for submersible navigation. The biophysics of CNs are known to be different from the SNs and thereby offer a distinct submodality. However, it is generally unclear whether CNs play a distinct r

Sedentary behavior as a factor in determining lateral line contributions to rheotaxis.

Rheotaxis is a robust, multisensory behavior with many potential benefits for fish and other aquatic animals. Visual (optic flow) cues appear to be sufficient for rheotaxis, but other sensory cues can clearly compensate for the loss of vision. The role of various non-visual sensory systems, in particular the flow-sensing lateral line, is poorly understood, largely because of widely varying methods and sensory conditions for studying rheotaxis. Here, we examine how sedentary behavior under visually deprived conditions affects the relative importance of lateral line cues in two species: one that

Distribution and innervation of lateral line organs in the axolotl.

The lateral line system in axolotls consists of three types of receptors and the cranial nerves that innervate them. Superficial neuromasts, which are mechanoreceptors, are distributed in lines on both the head and trunk. Eight cephalic and three trunk lines can be distinguished on the basis of their innervation and differences in the orientation of the major axes of their neuromasts. A combination of histological techniques reveals that five separate pairs of cranial nerves innervate the neuromasts: anterodorsal lateral line nerves innervate cephalic supraorbital and infraorbital lines; anter
