Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium continues to be a major cause of foodborne illness worldwide and pork can serve as a source of infection. Co-infection of S. enterica with Lawsonia intracellularis, a common intestinal pathogen of swine, has been found as risk factor for increased S. enterica shedding. The objective of this study was to investigate if vaccination against L. intracellularis could lead to decreased S. Typhimurium shedding. To test this hypothesis, pigs were challenged with either S. Typhimurium or S. Typhimurium and L. intracellularis, with and without L. intracellularis v

Lawsonia intracellularis is among the most important enteric pathogens of swine and has been shown to be a risk factor for increased Salmonella enterica shedding. S. enterica serovar Typhimurium, in addition to being a significant pathogen of swine, also remains one of the most common causes of foodborne illness worldwide. Inflammation and the expression of IL8 and TNFα are an important process in the establishment of S. Typhimurium infection. Yet the effect of L. intracellularis on the expression of these cytokines by enterocytes, the niche both pathogens occupy during infection, is poorly un

Feed efficiency (FE) is a valuable trait, yet how genetic selection for enhanced FE affects other processes such as response to disease is unknown. Disease from endemic respiratory and enteric pathogens such as Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Mh) and Lawsonia intracellularis (LI) are common in swine production. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine if pigs selected for high vs. low FE based on residual feed intake (RFI) respond differently to a dual respiratory and enteric challenge. Pigs selected for low RFI (LRFI, high FE) are considered more FE compared to their high RFI (HRFI, low FE)

Salmonella spp., Lawsonia intracellularis, and Brachyspira spp. are pathogens commonly associated with diarrhea in growing and finishing pigs. Brachyspira spp. infection has recently reemerged as a significant concern due to an increase in the incidence of swine dysentery; however, the mechanisms underlying this increase in dysentery remain largely unknown. Pigs are also well-recognized as potential carriers of Campylobacter spp., particularly Campylobacter coli, yet enteric disease in swine associated with infection by these bacteria is considered uncommon and diagnosis has historically been

Efficient, high-quality production is essential to the swine industry, with carcass inspection by health authorities playing a crucial role in detecting abnormalities that may lead to condemnation, including enteritis. Enteritis is, usually, characterized by changes in color, mucosal integrity, intestinal wall thickness and luminal contents and has a multifactorial etiology. This study assessed and classified visual lesions attributed to enteritis and to seek for associations with known pathogens. A scoring system was applied to classify visual changes, and 30 condemned intestines were categor

The swine industry faces a substantial economic threat from Lawsonia intracellularis (LI), the bacterium responsible for porcine proliferative enteropathy. Infection commonly presents with diarrhea and increased enterocyte proliferation in the ileum and colon, ultimately resulting in impaired growth performance in affected pigs. Effective management of porcine proliferative enteropathy requires timely and accurate diagnosis. The method provides significant advantages over existing detection techniques, offering enhanced sensitivity and high accuracy. The assay achieves detection within one hou

Lawsonia intracellularis is an economically important bacterium that causes ileitis in pigs. Current vaccines for L. intracellularis do not allow for differentiation between infected and vaccinated animals (DIVA), which is beneficial for disease tracking and surveillance. Previously, we identified five putative surface L. intracellularis proteins that were targeted by antibodies from pigs infected with L. intracellularis which could serve as antigens in a subunit vaccine. We conducted two trials to determine whether these antigens were immunogenic and provided protection against infectious cha

Lawsonia intracellularis is a Gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterium that is the aetiological agent of proliferative enteropathy (PE), a common intestinal disease of major economic importance in pigs and other animal species. To date, progress in understanding the biology of L. intracellularis for improved disease control has been hampered by the inability to culture the organism in vitro. In particular, our understanding of the genomic diversity and population structure of clinical L. intercellularis is very limited. Here, we utilized a metagenomic shotgun approach to directly sequenc

Lawsonia intracellularis, the etiological agent for proliferative enteropathy, remains a major cause of productivity loss and economic burden in the global swine industry. Currently available vaccines provide suboptimal protection and raise safety concerns, highlighting the need for improved immunization strategies. In this study, we developed Salmonella Typhimurium-based vaccine candidates against L. intracellularis in a murine model, incorporating immunoprotective epitopes from the surface autotransporter protein LatA, the flagellar protein FliC, and the heat shock protein 60 (HSP60). These

According to international guidelines, the use of antibacterials should be evidence based and prudent. This register-based, cross-sectional study investigates the potential effect of laboratory findings on the patterns of antibacterial oral (batch) medication of weaner pigs, and the level of compliance with national guidelines for antibacterial use. The study population includes 1,736 weaner herds (≈65% of all Danish weaner pigs) that were subject to laboratory analysis from the National Veterinary Institute on Brachyspira pilosicoli, Lawsonia intracellularis, and E.coli (F4 and F18) in 2014.

Respiratory and digestive diseases cause significant losses in the swine industry. The current study aimed to investigate the prevalence of viruses and bacteria associated with respiratory/reproductive and digestive diseases in pigs. Clinical samples were collected from 230 farms in South Korea between 2021 and 2023 from pigs with suspected diseases. The pigs were screened for pathogens related to respiratory/reproductive and digestive diseases via multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction. Of the 104,128 samples, 28,281 [27.2%, 95% confidence interval (CI): 26.9%-27.4%] tested positive fo

Leptospira, Brucella, and Borrelia are major agents of zoonotic disease, causing high morbidity and, in some cases, significant mortality in humans. For all three genera, prompt diagnosis and appropriate antimicrobial therapy are required to prevent the development of chronic, debilitating illness. Leptospira spp. are intrinsically resistant to several antimicrobial classes; however, there is little evidence in the literature for development of acquired resistance to antimicrobial agents used for clinical treatment of acute leptospirosis. For Brucella infections, there are numerous reports of

Low pathogen diarrhoea is a group-level diagnosis, characterised by non-haemorrhagic diarrhoea. In the current study, the apparent prevalence of low pathogen diarrhoea outbreaks in Danish herds was investigated along with the clinical utility of a laboratory examination for intestinal disease, agreement between three consecutive herd examinations from the same herd and agreement between quantitative PCR results from pooled faecal samples and sock samples. Twenty-four veterinarians submitted faecal and sock samples for quantitative PCR testing from outbreaks of diarrhoea in nursery pigs (n=38 h

Gut microbiota plays important roles in host metabolism. Whether and how much the gut microbiota in different gut locations contributes to the variations of host serum metabolites are largely unknown, because it is difficult to obtain microbial samples from different gut locations on a large population scale. Here, we quantified the gut microbial compositions using 16S rRNA gene sequencing for 1070 samples collected from the ileum, cecum and faeces of 544 F6 pigs from a mosaic pig population. Untargeted metabolome measurements determined serum metabolome profiles. We found 1671, 12,985 and 103
