Radon releases from uranium-mining legacies are commonly evaluated in relation to inhalation exposure. Here, the separate question is whether the 210Pb produced from sustained legacy releases could perturb the inventories used to date and interpret soils, sediments, peat and other environmental archives. Cherenkov Luminescence Imaging (CLI) is a new method to image radioactive therapeutic and diagnostic agents, primarily in preclinical studies. This study used Geant4 and Python to generate the predicted Cherenkov light production as a function of time for a set of isotopic chains of interest for targeted alpha therapy: 223Ra, 212Pb, and 149Tb. All are shown to produce substantial Cherenkov light, though time delays between initial decays and the production of Cherenkov light requires caution in interpreting CLI.

Sedimentary processes, ecological risks, and historical trends of mercury (Hg) contamination were assessed through 210Pb-dated sediment cores and sediment traps (period 2017-2019) in Términos Lagoon (TL), a critical coastal ecosystem in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Hg natural background levels in TL cores widely varied (7-153 ng g-1), and Hg concentrations were higher in the cores (median 32 ng g-1, range 6-4240 ng g-1) than in the sediment traps (median 54 ng g-1, range 44-1311 ng g-1). Three children with pyogenic arthritis of the sacroiliac joints are presented. A study of the literature shows that this condition, although not well known, is not uncommon in childhood. Clinical features and particularly physical examination of the sacroiliac joints are described. They should lead to suspect sacroiliac disease. Radioisotope bone scanning is of great help as it substantially reduces the delay in correct diagnosis. Antibiotic treatment is usually sufficient for adequate management of pyogenic sacroiliitis. The intravenous route for antibiotic administration is not mandatory.

Viral infection is a leading cause of disease and death. Although vaccines are the most effective method of controlling viral infections, antiviral drugs are also important. Here, we established an in vitro transcription system by using fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated primers for RNA polymerases of viruses that are important disease-causing human pathogens (influenza, hepatitis C, Japanese encephalitis viruses, and enterovirus 71). This technology will allow us to analyze RNA polymerase activity without using radioisotopes.

Previously published biologic distribution and clearance data for 169Yb-DTPA in cisternography were utilized to obtain effective spinal segment clearance data for six other easily dhelated radionuclides: 99mTc, 113mIn, 111In, 67Ga, 51Cr, and 203Pb. Twenty adult epileptic out-patients who had received anticonvulsant therapy for a mean duration of 15 years were assessed for clinical, biochemical, radioisotopic and bone biopsy evidence of osteomalacia. Occasional biochemical abnormalities were demonstrated but no individual subject was found to have osteomalacia. The chemistry of Pb in urban soil must be understood in order to limit human exposure to Pb in soil and produce and to implement remediation schemes. In inner-city gardens where Pb contamination is prevalent and financial resources are limited, it is critical to identify the variables that control Pb bioavailability. Myocardial infarction and subsequent heart failure is a major health burden associated with significant mortality and morbidity in western societies. The ability of cardiac tissue to recover after myocardial infarction is affected by numerous complex cellular and molecular pathways. Unbalance or failure of these pathways can lead to adverse remodelling of the heart and poor prognosis. Current clinical cardiac imaging modalities assess anatomy, perfusion, function, and viability of the myocardium, yet do not offer any insight into the specific molecular pathways involved in the repair process.

Gold, silver and lead thioglucose were evaluated in rodents to determine the value of organo-metallic compounds in the study of metabolic abnormalities.
