Intravascular leiomyomatosis is a rare condition characterized by histologically benign smooth muscle cell growth within the uterine veins and inferior vena cava and, rarely, into the right chambers of the heart. A 39-year-old female with a history of hysterectomy for uterine leiomyoma was admitted for lower limb oedema and progressive dyspnea of 5 months' duration. Transthoracic echocardiography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a large mass extending through the inferior vena cava into the right chambers of the heart. As there was a suspicion of an intravenous thrombus, the pa…

Intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare nonmalignant tumor defined as a benign smooth muscle cell neoplasia in the veins. Patients with IVL may present with symptoms of a uterine leiomyoma such as pelvic pain and vaginal bleeding, or cardiorespiratory symptoms, including dyspnea and leg swelling. We report the case of a 65-year-old otherwise healthy Caucasian woman. Past medical history consisted of hysterectomy and left salpingo-oophorectomy 15 years before for multiple uterine fibromyomas associated with leiomyoma of vascular origin. A thoracoabdominal computed tomography (CT) scan confir…

Leiomyoma is the most common benign solid pelvic tumor seen in women. It is most commonly located in the uterus and gastrointestinal tract, but it can originate wherever smooth muscle cells exist. Although it has been reported in various atypical localizations, they are extremely rare in the retroperitoneum. Also, preoperative diagnosis is often difficult in retroperitoneal tumors. Imaging studies may demonstrate the retroperitoneal tumors; however, exact diagnosis cannot be established by imaging methods alone. Here, we report a case with retroperitoneal leiomyomatosis diagnosed by preoperati…

A 28-year-old woman presented with intussusception. At laparotomy the peritoneal cavity was found to contain many nodules of various sizes, fitting the diagnosis of 'leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata'. A leiomyomatous tumour that caused the intussusception was also found.

Four female members of the same family suffering from a rare combination of oesophageal leiomyomatosis and an Alport-like nephropathy are described. The disease is characterized by marked thickening of the oesophageal wall, usually also involving the proximal stomach, with or without discernible leiomyomatous nodule formation. All cases were treated surgically by oesophagectomy with symptomatic relief, and there was no evidence of recurrence on follow-up (2-37 years). The syndrome appears to be dominantly inherited, affects children and young adults, and may also be associated with leiomyomato…

OBJECTIVES: Describe the radiographic features of the different forms of extrauterine leiomyomatosis.
CONCLUSIONS: Leiomyomas with a rare growth pattern occur most often in women of reproductive age and with a history of hysterectomy. Extrauterine leiomyomas present a greater diagnostic challenge because they may mimic malignancies, and serious diagnostic errors may result.

Intravenous leiomyomatosis is a histologically benign smooth muscle tumor that arises either by direct extension of a uterine leiomyoma into the adjacent veins or by vascular intimal smooth muscle proliferation. Herein, we report the case of a 60-year-old female who was noted to have suspected cardiac mass on elective echocardiography done electively for abnormal electrocardiographic findings. Computed tomography and cardiac magnetic resonance indicated the presence of an intravenous leiomyoma originating from the uterus and extending to the inferior vena cava and right atrium. The patient was…

Intravenous leiomyomatosis with intracardiac extension is a rare condition characterized by extensive growth of a benign uterine mass that extends into the venous system through uterine channels and then into the cardiac chambers. A variety of presentations exist; cure relies on complete surgical resection. Extensive abdominal dissection, cardiopulmonary bypass (with or without circulatory arrest), and removal of the intracaval component are required. However, because of the rarity and variety of presentation, exact preferred management has not been well defined. A specific case, followed by a…

Intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare benign condition characterized by the proliferation of smooth muscle cells originating from either the uterine venous wall or a uterine myoma. This leiomyomatosis extends most frequently to pelvic vessels, but also occasionally into the inferior vena cava and right cardiac chambers. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult and it should be suspected in the presence of cardiac or pelvic masses in women who have undergone hysterectomy or myomectomy previously. The treatment is hysterectomy, normally associated with a bilateral oophorectomy and removing the m…

Introduction Intravenous leiomyomatosis is a benign and rare condition that can result in cardiac events with fatal outcomes when left untreated. Intravenous leiomyomatosis is probably underestimated because the diagnosis is easily missed. We present a case of an intravenous leiomyomatosis without extra-pelvic involvement, with a brief review of this pathology. Case Report 46-year-old woman submitted to hysterectomy and bilateral adnexectomy because of a pelvic mass detected in ultrasound. During the surgery, intravenous leiomyomatosis diagnosis was suspected. Pathological analysis confirmed t…
