PURPOSE: This study describes lacrimal tract involvement and surgical outcome in patients with mucocutaneous leishmaniasis.
METHODS: Four patients, ages 20 to 75 years, had nasal lesions resulting from mucocutaneous leishmaniasis and sought treatment for chronic dacryocystitis. Each patient had had lacrimal symptoms since childhood or early adulthood, concomitantly with the development of upper airway lesions. Dacryocystography showed nasolacrimal duct stenosis in all cases on the affected side. Three patients underwent dacryocystorhinostomy (one bilaterally), and one patient had bilateral da

Two new cases of midfacial granuloma caused by leishmaniasis are reported. This disease is very rare in France but very frequent in South America, where it occurs in two forms called UTA and Espundia. These are described here as well as the means of diagnosis and treatment for this disease. A brief review of the cases published in France seems to indicate that the disease is underestimated in this country. The study of the cases published in other African or European countries shows that all species of Leishmania can produce a midfacial granuloma.

Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis is a severe infectious disease, predominantly endemic in Central and South America and is characterized by granulomatous, destructive mucosal lesions in the oral, nasal, and pharyngeal cavities. It is caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania spp. transmitted to humans by sandflies. Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis occurs after untreated or inadequately treated cutaneous leishmaniasis and is more common in immunocompromised patients. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize all reported treatment options for mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. This review is based on

BACKGROUND: On the American continent, cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (CL and MCL) are diseases associated with infection by several species of Leishmania parasites. Pentavalent antimonials remain the first-choice treatment. There are alternative interventions, but reviewing their effectiveness and safety is important as availability is limited. This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in 2009.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of interventions for all immuno-competent people who have American cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (ACML).

Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis of the nose: a case report. Leishmaniasis is a parasitic infection that is rarely seen in Belgium. The majority of new diagnoses are seen in patients living in or visiting endemic regions, which are mostly developing countries. Here we describe the case of a 60-year-old male patient who was referred to an ENT specialist because of an erythematous swelling of the left side of the nose tip, which had persisted for 3 months. Biopsies showed the presence of leishmaniasis. This case report alerts ENT physicians that leishmaniasis is part of the differential diagnosis in

BACKGROUND: Pentavalent antimonial drugs are the most prescribed treatment for American cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. Other drugs have been used with varying success.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of therapeutic interventions for American cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis.

In this work we demonstrate that the PCR-ELISA technique is sufficiently sensitive and specific for use as a diagnostic test in cases of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. DNA was extracted from cultures of Leishmania braziliensis, Leishmania infantum, Leishmania tropica, Leishmania mexicana, Trypanosoma cruzi, and blood samples from individuals who presented a clinical diagnosis of leishmaniasis as well as from healthy individuals. The DNA was PCR amplified and the product obtained was hybridised with a biotin-labelled probe, the sequence of which was designed in our laboratory. The result of the h

BACKGROUND: The mucocutaneous form of New World cutaneous leishmaniasis is caused, theoretically, by Leishmania (viannia) braziliensis. Pentad valency antimonic compounds are widely used for treatment of New World cutaneous leishmaniasis. The rate of recurrence is often high when these drugs are used for mucocutaneous forms. Pentamidine has been considered as a second line treatment although little data is available.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventeen patients with mucocutaneous leishmaniasis were treated with pentamidine isothionate, 4 mg/kg every 48 hours. A complete oto-rhino-laryngological e

A series of over 400 well-documented biopsies of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis was evaluated to elucidate the histological processes associated with the elimination of parasites, and their correlation with the course of the disease. Non-specific inflammation was the most frequent and least effective response; its onset might be delayed, and in this event particularly the incidence of metastasis from skin to mucosa was high. Lysis of parasite-laden macrophages appeared to be the basic mechanism of parasite reduction, even when it was not overt. When it was acute the onset was usually rapid, and t

Leishmaniasis is a major neglected tropical disease which contributes a huge economic burden on already meager economic resources. The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated an annual incidence of 700,000--1,000,000 patients and about 20,000-30,000 deaths per year. Approximately 66,941 patients of cutaneous leishmaniasis are reported annually in the Americas. In recent years, Nicaragua has presented alarmingly high numbers of patients and elevated incidence rates. Unfortunately, there are no detailed spatial descriptions on the epidemiological situation of leishmaniasis in this country.

The Mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis (MCL) involving lip is extremely uncommon. A clinical diagnosis of Leishmaniasis of the lips is often challenging to the treating clinician and may result in delayed diagnosis as this case illustrates. MCL should be considered in the differential diagnosis of lip lesions in a Leishmania endemic area.

A 43-year-old Japanese Bolivian male had been suffering from a right leg ulcer after an insect bite during his residence in Bolivia. The ulcer healed after herbal medicine treatment. Ten years later, the patient had symptoms of nasal obstruction, nasal bleeding, and pharyngodynia, which were accompanied by a destructive ulcer with surrounding erythema involving the right nostril apex and columella. Papillary, irregular mucosal lesions were seen on the soft palate. Giemsa staining and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using biopsy specimens of the papillary mucosal lesions on the soft palate fail

The clinical picture of cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis is still the first step in infection suspicion and, consequently, for its accurate diagnosis and sample obtention for parasitological confirmation. Even though leishmaniasis is the parasitic infection with the greatest increase in the last years in Colombia, it is difficult to find in the literature photographs of its clinical manifestations and evolution. For this reason, and hoping to offer a reference article for health personnel dealing frequently with this pathology, a series of pictures is presented that summarize the clin
