Leisure Activities Associated With Functional Impairment Risk Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults With Depressive Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: It is important to develop effective support strategies to prevent functional impairment among older adults with depressive symptoms. Participation in leisure activities may help prevent functional impairment. However, it is unclear what types of leisure activities are associated with functional impairment in this population. The purpose of this study was to identify leisure activities associated with future functional impairment among community-dwelling older adults who were not functionally impaired but exhibited depressive symptoms at baseline. METHODS: A prospective cohort stu

Leisure Activities in Very Old Age: Prevalence and Links to Well-Being in (Near-)Centenarians.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined leisure activity engagement among (near-)centenarians and its association with two aspects of well-being: life satisfaction and purpose in life. We analyzed specific activity types and their combinations, as well as three activity parameters: the total number of activities, the variety of different higher-order activity types, and the distribution of activities across these types (i.e., activity diversity). METHODS: We pooled data from two comparable studies conducted in the USA and Germany, yielding a final sample of N = 134 participants aged 96-107 years. A

What Is the Association Between Music-Related Leisure Activities and Dementia Risk? A Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether engagement in music-related leisure activities is associated with a reduced risk of dementia and cognitive impairment no dementia (CIND), as well as better cognitive wellbeing in initially cognitively healthy older adults. Here, cognitive wellbeing includes maintaining good cognitive function as well as quality of life. Potential effect modification by education was also investigated. METHODS: This study used secondary data from the ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) study, and the ASPREE Longitudinal Study of Older Persons (ALSOP) sub-study. I

Leisure activities and working memory in older age: The mediating roles of affect and cortisol.

Leisure activities may protect cognitive performance in older age, but the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. This study examined the short-term time-lagged associations between leisure activities that are minimally physically active (e.g., meeting friends; hereinafter referred to as "leisure activities") and working memory, and whether affect and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (i.e., cortisol) mediate such associations. We examined 7,928 observations provided by 235 participants (aged 56-88 years, 49% women) from the German socioeconomic panel. Over 7 days, participants r

Does the association between leisure activities and survival in old age differ by living arrangement?

BACKGROUND: Government policies to promote ageing in place have led to a growing frail population living at home in advanced old age, many of whom live alone. Living alone in old age is associated with adverse health outcomes, but we know little about whether it moderates the health impact of other risk and protective factors. Engagement in leisure activities is considered critical to successful ageing. We investigated whether the association between different types of leisure activities and survival in non-institutionalised older adults (aged 76 and above) differs by living arrangement and ge

Sunlight exposure during leisure activities and risk of prostate cancer in Montréal, Canada, 2005-2009.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the leading cause of cancer in men in many developed countries, but no modifiable risk factors have been identified. A handful of analytical studies have suggested a possible etiological role for sunlight exposure. We report here on the association between leisure-time sunlight exposure during adulthood and PCa risk in the context of a population-based case-control study. METHODS: In all, 1,904 PCa cases were ascertained across Montreal French hospitals between 2005 and 2009. Concurrently, 1,962 population controls, frequency matched to cases by age (±5 ye

Frequency of leisure activities and depressive symptomatology in elderly people: the moderating role of rumination.

BACKGROUND: The positive effects of leisure activities on depressive symptomatology are well known. However, the extent to which emotional regulation variables moderate that relationship has scarcely been studied, especially in older people. The aim of this study is to analyze the moderating role of rumination in the relation between leisure activities and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Participants in this study were 311 people, aged 60 to 90 years (mean age: 71.27 years; SD: 6.99; 71.7% women). We evaluated depressive symptomatology, frequency of leisure activities, and rumination. We carrie

Exploring Teachers' Back Pain Concerning Their Habits, Rules, Leisure Activities, and Physical Activity Breaks at Work.

The role of a teacher in the Faculty of Health Sciences involves teaching students, preparing lessons, and participating in other activities such as research projects and management processes. Professional participation is part of their involvement in daily occupations, which are taking place in teachers' socio-cultural context and are necessary for their well-being. Teachers' work performance can be enabled or constrained by their professional habits, including habits while using computers. We investigated awareness of and adherence to recommendations on ergonomics and preventive measures for

Who benefits from which activity? On the relations between personality traits, leisure activities, and well-being.

Leisure activities have been emphasized as an important predictor of well-being. However, little research has examined the effects of leisure activity enactment on well-being over time. Moreover, it is unknown which activities are most beneficial for whom. We integrate diverse theoretical accounts of person-environment relations and propose a generic Personality-Activity-Well-Being (PAW) framework, which highlights different relations between personality traits, activities, and well-being. To investigate these relations, we used 11 annual waves from the Longitudinal Internet Studies for the So

Hearing loss and cognitive function among Chinese older adults: the role of participation in leisure activities.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss, a highly prevalent sensory impairment affecting older adults, is a risk factor for cognition decline. However, there were very limited studies on this association in low-resource countries. This study aimed to assess the association between self-reported hearing loss and cognitive decline, and whether engagement in leisure activities moderated this association among older adults in China. METHODS: Data were obtained from two waves of the nationally representative survey of China Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) between 2011/12-2014. Eight thousand eight

Leisure time activity and new onset of wheezing during adolescence.

Asthma prevalence is increasing in adult and paediatric patients. In the present study, the association between different leisure time activities and new onset of wheezing was analysed in adolescents aged 16-18 yrs taking part in a questionnaire-based follow-up of the International Study on Asthma and Allergies in Childhood in Munich and Dresden, Germany. Of the 3,785 adolescents who took part in the follow-up (76% response), 2,910 adolescents without earlier episodes of wheezing in childhood were included in the analyses. Of these, 330 (11.3%) reported new onset of wheeze during the previous

Leisure time, physical activity and some indices of mental health.

In the introduction the concept of health is discussed. The author emphasizes that the concept of health is often used in a biased and uncritical manner in discussions on the value of physical activity in relation to health. The practice of physical activity should be seen in relation to a more holistic concept of health, defined as a human being's total ability to function. Results are then presented from a number of investigations, of which the majority indicate a positive relation between physical activity and a reduction in the following indices of mental health: anxiety, depression, nervo
