The Potential Implications of Hydrogen Sulfide in Aging and Age-Related Diseases through the Lens of Mitohormesis.

The growing increases in the global life expectancy and the incidence of chronic diseases as a direct consequence have highlighted a demand to develop effective strategies for promoting the health of the aging population. Understanding conserved mechanisms of aging across species is believed helpful for the development of approaches to delay the progression of aging and the onset of age-related diseases. Mitochondrial hormesis (or mitohormesis), which can be defined as an evolutionary-based adaptive response to low-level stress, is emerging as a promising paradigm in the field of anti-aging. D

From Disease to Illness: Reframing Periodontitis Through an Anthropological Lens.

While periodontitis is globally recognized as a significant public health problem, its common definition as a plaque-based inflammatory condition is incomplete. Disease progression, personal experience, and treatment are shaped by social, economic, and structural forces largely invisible in clinical practice and policy. A lens from medical anthropology helps us see periodontitis as more than a clinical diagnosis; it is a lived experience, deeply entangled with a person's social world. The physical reality of inflammation translates into profound emotional distress-from the shame and stigma of

Chronic Hypertension in Pregnancy: A Lens Into Cardiovascular Disease Risk and Prevention.

Hypertension is a major, modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the United States. Over the past decade, the prevalence of chronic hypertension (CHTN) during pregnancy has nearly doubled with persistent race- and place-based disparities. Blood pressure elevations are of particular concern during pregnancy given higher risk of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality, as well as higher lifetime risk of CVD in birthing individuals with CHTN. When identified during pregnancy, CHTN can, therefore, serve as a lens into CVD risk, as well as a modifiable target to mitigate cardi

Seeing Early Signs of Alzheimer's Disease Through the Lens of the Eye.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) develops undetected for years due to the lack of early diagnostic biomarkers. In advanced AD, visual deficits related to cortical neurodegeneration are well recognized, but recent studies have identified that the retina could be affected prior to vulnerable brain areas such as cortex and hippocampus. In this review, we discuss a new evidence suggesting that functional alterations in the retina may become the earliest diagnostic biomarkers for AD. METHODS: Analytical analysis of bibliographic databases for peer-reviewed research literature was performed by

Chronic rhinosinusitis in Europe--an underestimated disease. A GA²LEN study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common health problem, with significant medical costs and impact on general health. Even so, prevalence figures for Europe are unavailable. In this study, conducted by the GA²LEN network of excellence, the European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis and nasal Polyps (EP³OS) diagnostic criteria are applied to estimate variation in the prevalence of Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) for Europe. METHOD: A postal questionnaire was sent to a random sample of adults aged 15-75 years in 19 centres in Europe. Participants reported symptoms of CRS, and doctor dia

A serious refractive multifocal intraocular lens complication in Meniere's disease.

PURPOSE: To report an unfortunate case of patient selection for multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL) implantation. METHODS: Interventional case report. RESULTS: A 69-year-old woman with bilateral corticonuclear cataract underwent uneventful phacoemulsification with diffractive MIOL implantation within 1 week. She reported no previous medical history. A few days later she had persisting dizziness and experienced extreme photic phenomena, which progressively deteriorated. After intensive conversation, we discovered that our patient had a medical history of Meniere's disease. Bilateral intraocula

Huntington's disease: seeing the pathogenic process through a genetic lens.

Thirteen years ago, the culmination of genetic rather than biochemical strategies resulted in the identification of the root cause of Huntington's disease: an expanded CAG trinucleotide repeat that leads to an elongated polyglutamine tract in the huntingtin protein. Since then, biochemical and cell biological attempts to elucidate pathogenesis have largely focused on N-terminal polyglutamine-containing huntingtin fragments. However, continued application of genetic strategies has suggested that the disease process is, in fact, triggered by the presence of expanded polyglutamine in intact hunti

The Boston Scleral Lens in the management of severe ocular surface disease.

Fluid-ventilated, gas-permeable scleral lenses are a valuable front-line tool in the management of severe ocular surface disease. In addition to enhancing vision, they have the potential to reduce greatly the disabling ocular pain and photophobia associated with SJS, TEN, and ocular cicatricial pemphigoid. They are also useful in healing some PEDs that are refractory to all other treatment strategies and in reducing PED recurrence in stem cell-deficient and neurotrophic corneas. The therapeutic benefits of these lenses are provided by the oxygenated aqueous environment they create over the cor

Leprosy and Hansen's Disease: Rethinking Terminology Through a Patient-Centered Lens.

The term leprosy carries profound stigma, yet its common alternative, Hansen's disease, paradoxically commemorates a physician who performed nonconsensual experimentation on a woman affected by leprosy. We argue that future terminology should be reconsidered through an international process centered on people affected by the disease.

From development to disease: the neuronal role of hnRNPs through the lens of Drosophila.

Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) are a large family of RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) involved in multiple aspects of nucleic acid metabolism, ranging from DNA maintenance to RNA splicing and translation. As a consequence, hnRNPs play a pivotal role during development and in cellular homeostasis, and their dysregulation has been linked to a wide range of diseases, in particular cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Owing to the high evolutionary conservation of their domains and functions, the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster represents a useful model for the study and charact

Lens aging and disease: Molecular mechanisms, functional consequences, and pharmacological implications.

Age-related cataract (ARC) remains the leading cause of blindness worldwide, reflecting the progressive failure of lifelong mechanisms that preserve the transparency and refractive precision of the ocular lens. The lens is uniquely vulnerable to aging because its core fiber cells, crystallin proteins, and lipids persist for decades without turnover, relying on stable protein solubility, redox homeostasis, membrane integrity, and tightly coordinated epithelial renewal. With age, gradual biochemical and biomechanical shifts, including crystallin oxidation and truncation, deamidation and racemiza

Lens Opacity in ABCA4-Associated Stargardt Disease Patients in the ProgStar Study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to estimate lens opacity (LO) and associated risk factors in patients with ABCA4 associated Stargardt disease (STGD1). METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of the multicenter ProgStar study. Patients with molecularly confirmed STGD1 aged ≥6 years from the United States and Europe were enrolled and followed for 2 years. LO was graded using the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) protocol during slit lamp examinations. Baseline prevalence and 2-year incidence of LO were estimated. Logistic regression with generalized estimating equation was used to iden

Ancient DNA as a temporal lens: reconstructing evolution, migration, and disease dynamics.

Ancient DNA (aDNA) has transformed evolutionary biology and anthropology by providing direct, chronologically validated genetic evidence over millennia. This review synthesizes significant findings from the paleogenomic era (2010-2025), demonstrating how ancient DNA has resolved persistent debates across four interconnected themes: (i) human migration and admixture, revealing complex population transitions from archaic hominins to Holocene expansions; (ii) adaptation, tracking allele frequency changes during domestication and selection; (iii) pathogen history, clarifying the origins of pandemi

Microbial keratitis: could contact lens material affect disease pathogenesis?

Microbial keratitis is a sight-threatening complication associated with contact lenses. The introduction of silicone hydrogel lens materials with increased oxygen transmission to the ocular surface has not significantly altered the incidence of microbial keratitis. These data suggest that alternate, or additional, predisposing factors involving lens wear must be addressed to reduce or eliminate these infections. The contact lens can provide a surface for microbial growth in situ and can also influence ocular surface homeostasis through effects on the tear fluid and corneal epithelium. Thus, it

Role of clear lens extraction in adult angle closure disease: a review.

Treatments for angle closure include eye drops, laser procedures, trabeculectomy and other drainage procedures, and now lens extraction. A 2006 Cochrane review of the role of lens extraction in angle closure disease concluded that there was no published evidence supporting the efficacy of lens extraction in chronic primary angle closure glaucoma. More recent randomized controlled trials have suggested greater promise. We wish to address the rationale, evidence base and philosophy for lens extraction - especially clear lens extraction - in preventing vision loss from glaucoma in angle closure d

Examining resilience to Alzheimer's disease through the lens of monoaminergic neuromodulator systems.

The monoaminergic nuclei are thought to be some of the earliest sites of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology in the brain, with tau-containing pretangles appearing in these nuclei decades before the onset of clinical impairments. It has increasingly been recognized that monoamine systems represent a critical target of investigation towards understanding the progression of AD and designing early detection and treatment approaches. This review synthesizes evidence across animal studies, human neuropathology, and state-of-the-art neuroimaging and daily life assessment methods in humans, which demo
