A panel of 5 different breast-cancer and 2 other cancer extracts was used to clarify the false-negative responses in patients with Stage I and II breast cancer and the false-positive responses in control subjects. The resistance in mice against Listeria infection was augmented by treatment with recombinant human tumor necrosis factor (TNF). To elucidate this phenomenon, we examined the effect of TNF on macrophage activation. TNF-treated macrophages had listericidal activity in vitro and superoxide anion production. In addition, macrophage migration was inhibited in the presence of TNF. Therefore, activation of macrophages by TNF was similar to activation by macrophage-activating factor or macrophage-migration-inhibitory factor.

Rosmarinus officinalis L. (Lamiaceae), popularly known as rosemary, is used for food flavoring and in folk medicine as an antispasmodic, analgesic, antirheumatic, diuretic, and antiepileptic agent. Few studies have shown the anti-inflammatory effects of rosemary essential oil (REO). This study evaluated the effects of REO on leukocyte migration through in vivo leukocyte migration and in vitro chemotaxis assay. REO was analyzed by using gas chromatography-mass spectometry, and the main components identified were camphor (27.59%), 1,8-cineole (15.74%), α-pinene (16.58%), and β-myrcene (10.02%).

The adherence of polymorphonuclear neutrophils was examined in 16 children affected by enteritis, pneumonia, hepatitis and infectious mononucleosis. The results were compared with those obtained in 30 healthy adult volunteers and in 15 healthy children of the same age. Adhesiveness was significantly higher in adults than in healthy children, and significantly higher in healthy children than in children with viral infection. In 7 patients tested one month after regression of the disorder, PMN adhesiveness had returned to normal.
