Oral hairy leukoplakia in a child with AIDS.

A case of a 9-year-old boy with AIDS and severe hairy leukoplakia on the tongue is reported. Clinically it appears as a bilateral whitish-grey, nonremovable lesion on the lateral margins of the tongue with characteristic vertical corrugations. The lesion failed to respond to topical and systemic antifungal treatment. In contrast, it completely disappeared after treatment with 600 mg acyclovir per day for 1 month. During the hairy leukoplakia development the CD4-lymphocytes count was 95/microL.

[Therapy of oral hairy leukoplakia with acyclovir].

Oral hairy leukoplakia was treated in six patients with (a) acyclovir (i.v. or p.o.), (b) 0.1% vitamin-A acid solution or (c) human beta-interferon-gel (10(5) I.E./g) in a total of 23 therapeutic courses. In 5/6 patients, acyclovir (7.5 mg/kg every 8 h i.v. or 5 x 400 mg p.o. over 5-10 days) led to partial (n = 1) or complete (n = 4) remission. After 1-6 months, however, the leukoplakia recurred in all cases. Vitamin-A acid solution (n = 3) led to remission in one and to improvement in the others. Human beta-interferon gel (n = 3) had no visible effect. The efficacy of acyclovir is further evi

[Surgical treatment of patients with oral leukoplakia].

The aim of the study was to elaborate lingual nerve sparing procedure of submandibular gland duct stones extraction. The study involved 43 patients with syalolithiasis treated in Oral Surgery Unit of Central Research Institute of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2013-2015. It was shown that to prevent lingual nerve and artery injury submandibular salivary gland duct should be dissected to the level of obstruction thus allowing adequate visualization of anatomical correlations especially when removing stones from the distal part of the duct.

[A white lesion of the oral mucosa: leukoplakia?].

In three patients, two men aged 50 and 44 years and a woman aged 56 years, an apparently identical white lesion of the oral mucosa was found. The first patient appeared to have an irritation due to vigorous toothbrushing, which disappeared after reducing the brushing frequency and using a soft brush, the second patient had a lichen planus, for which a wait and see policy was adopted, and the third patient had verrucous hyperplasia with dysplasia which was treated by CO2-laser evaporation. Oral leukoplakia occurs frequently together with other white lesions. Leukoplakia is a diagnosis by exclus

Prevalence of oral leukoplakia in 1000 Berliners.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of oral leukoplakia and other oral white lesions in an urban population of non-referred patients to a department of oral surgery in the city of Berlin. DESIGN: A total of 1000 patients over the age of 16 were evaluated for oral leukoplakia and other oral white lesions. Age, sex, and smoking as well as alcohol habits were recorded. RESULTS: Of 506 men (50.6%) and 494 women (49.4%), 0.9% showed oral leukoplakia. Men were more frequently affected (1.6%) than women (0.2%). Patients of older age groups were more frequently affected

Apoptosis-associated proteins in oral hairy leukoplakia.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that the anti-apoptotic ability of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) may result in altered expression of apoptosis-associated proteins in oral hairy leukoplakia (HL), we evaluated HL tissue and normal epithelium for these proteins by immunohistochemistry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens of HL lesions and six specimens of normal control mucosa were selected from archived tissue specimens. Bcl-2, Bcl-x, Bax and p53 apoptosis-associated proteins were evaluated in immunohistochemically stained tissue sections according to staining

BMP5 mediates macrophage-driven Oral leukoplakia carcinogenesis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Oral leukoplakia (OLK) is a potentially malignant disorder of the oral cavity, and the risk of malignant transformation is positively correlated with the severity of epithelial dysplasia. This study aimed to investigate the critical role of the macrophage-BMP5 axis in OLK carcinogenesis. METHODS: We established a macrophage-depleted 4NQO-induced OLK model, and oral lesions were assessed through macroscopic and histopathological examination, immunostaining, and TUNEL staining. The target genes were identified through comparative analysis of RNA-sequencing data. Leuk1 cells

[Oral hairy leukoplakia induced by topical steroids].

BACKGROUND: Oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) is an EBV-associated condition of the oral mucosa, which is often painless. It is found predominantly in HIV-positive patients and is considered a clinical indicator of immunosuppression. OHL has rarely been described in HIV-negative patients, being found most often in association with iatrogenic immunosuppression. OHL induced by topical steroids remains extremely rare. PATIENTS AND METHODS: An 81-year-old HIV-negative woman, treated for 3 months with topical steroids for oral lichen planus, developed an asymptomatic white, corrugated, non-removable pl

Oral hairy leukoplakia: An exfoliative cytology study.

Oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) is a white, hyperplastic, vertically corrugated lesion that occurs on the lateral border of the tongue, usually unilateral. Caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), the lesion is said to be an early indicator of an immune deficiency status, thereby unmasking subclinical systemic conditions. OHL mimics many other white lesions of the oral cavity; therefore, it becomes imperative to identify the lesion. This study used exfoliative cytology, a noninvasive procedure, which helped in identifying the cellular changes brought about by the virus in the oral epithelium. The

Oral leukoplakia and adolescent smokeless tobacco use.

The recent increase in smokeless tobacco (ST) use has prompted investigators to assess the health effects of ST use. This study attempted to evaluate the prevalence of oral leukoplakia among adolescent users and to determine factors associated with its presence. During their annual physical examination, 1116 teenaged football players (567 black, 546 white) answered a 34-question survey and received an oral screening examination. Results indicated that 0.5% of nonusers, 1.5% of previous users, and 13% of current users had clinically evident oral leukoplakia. Factors statistically associated wit

[Oral hairy leukoplakia. Early sign of AIDS].

Oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) is a new lesion that appears specifically on the lateral borders of the tongue. It has basically been detected in immunosuppressed male homosexuals and it is associated with the later development of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or HIV infection. Epstein-Barr virus has been suggested to be the possible etiological agent. A review of the existing literature pointing out definition, clinical, histopathologic and ultrastructural features, prognostic and treatment is made. Moreover the characteristics of the individuals suffering from it are equally stu

Opportunistic oral infections in the immunosuppressed patient: oral hairy leukoplakia and oral candidiasis.

Several opportunistic infections associated with immunosuppression are noted to occur secondary to an altered relationship between host and organism. In relation to diminished host immunologic defenses, associated commensal organisms may evolve to a pathogen state. Candidiasis, a common oral marker disease reflective of immunosuppression, results from dysfunction of complex cellular interactions keyed by depressed T-cell activity or function. Certain viral infections may also serve as probable markers of immunosuppression. One such infection is typified by the development of oral hairy leukopl
