Lactobacillus brevis ZFM820 modulates intestinal ecological sulfur homeostasis to alleviate Desulfovibrio-driven colitis.

The overgrowth of Desulfovibrio has been increasingly recognized as a hallmark of dysbiosis in certain inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) settings. This pathobiont actively secretes excessive hydrogen sulfide (H2S) via sulfate reduction, which, combined with impaired host detoxification, severely disrupts intestinal sulfur homeostasis and drives mucosal damage. However, conventional therapeutics fail to concurrently address this ecological metabolic imbalance. Here, we demonstrate that L. brevis ZFM820 effectively modulates intestinal ecological sulfur homeostasis to alleviate Desulfovibrio-driv

Effects of vaginal lactobacilli in Chlamydia trachomatis infection.

Increasing evidence indicates that abnormal vaginal flora lacking lactobacilli facilitates the acquisition of several sexually transmitted diseases including Chlamydia trachomatis. C. trachomatis, the most common bacterial agent of genital infections worldwide, can progress from the lower to upper reproductive tract and induce severe sequelae. The ability of C. trachomatis to develop into a persistent form has been suggested as key pathogenetic mechanism underlying chronic infections and sequelae. The aim of our study was to investigate the C. trachomatis interaction with vaginal microbiota an

The spoilage characteristics and key metabolites of Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus plantarum in ready-to-eat chicken feet.

Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus plantarum are key spoilage microorganisms in vacuum-packaged ready-to-eat chicken feet (RTECF). This study explored the impact of single-strain inoculation with  L. brevis andL. plantarum on the physicochemical properties, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and non-volatile metabolites of RTECF. The results showed that inoculation with L. brevis and L. plantarum decreased the pH, L⁎ value, and textural properties of RTECF while having little effect on TVBN, TBARS, a⁎, and b⁎ values. A total of 62 VOCs were identified across all samples, with L. brevis pri

Structure-Guided Engineering of Carbonyl Reductase LbCR to Simultaneously Enhance Catalytic Activity and Thermostability toward Bulky Ketones.

(S)-2-Chloro-1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)ethanol ((S)-TCPE) is an important building block for the synthesis of antifungal drug luliconazole. Herein, a carbonyl reductase (CR) from Levilactobacillus brevis (LbCR) was identified for synthesis of (S)-TCPE. Through comprehensive Ala scanning and site-saturated mutagenesis (SSM) targeting the residues surrounding the substrate-binding pocket, the "best" variant LbCRM4 (N96V/E145A/A202L/M206A) was developed, which displays a 26.0-fold increase in catalytic activity, 83.5-fold enhancement in half-life (t1/2) at 40 °C (101.4 h), excellent enantioselectivit

Probiotic Characterization of Lactobacillus brevis MJM60390 and In Vivo Assessment of Its Antihyperuricemic Activity.

Uric acid is the final product of purine metabolism in human. The increase of serum uric acid is tightly related to the incidence of hyperuricemia and gout. Also, it has been reported that the intake of purine-rich foods like meat and seafood is associated with an increased risk of gout. Therefore, the reduction of purine absorption is one of therapeutic approaches to prevent hyperuricemia and gout. Currently, probiotics are being studied for the management of hyperuricemia and gout. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus brevis MJM60390 on hyperuricemia induced by

Multifactorial Neuroprotective Potential of γ-Aminobutyric acid-Producing Potential Probiotics Against Stress Induced Neuronal Cell Lines.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is associated with depressive-like behaviours and influences the gut-brain axis through vagal nerve-dependent mechanisms. Studies indicate that depression can be reversed with GABA administration, but the neuroprotective potential of GABA-producing bacteria remains underexplored. Subtractive screening identified five potential GABA-producing strains out of 95 distinct isolates, which were subsequently confirmed using thin-layer chromatography, NMR, and mass spectrometry. All five strains survived in acidic conditions, with survivability rates of 72-84%, and in 0.

Lactic Acid Bacteria Exert a Hepatoprotective Effect against Ethanol-Induced Liver Injury in HepG2 Cells.

Alcoholic liver fatty disease (ALFD) is caused by excessive and chronic alcohol consumption. Alcohol consumption causes an imbalance in the intestinal microflora, leading to liver disease induced by the excessive release of endotoxins into the hepatic portal vein. Therefore, research on the intestinal microflora to identify treatments for ALFD is increasing. In this study, the protective effects of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains, including Levilactobacillus brevis, Limosilactobacillus reuteri, and Limosilactobacillus fermentum, were evaluated in ethanol-induced HepG2 cells. Among the evalu

Clinical efficacy of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus brevis as adjuncts to professional mechanical plaque removal in periodontitis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease marked by progressive periodontal tissue destruction. It is classified according to the 2017 AAP/EFP staging and grading framework and managed in accordance with the EFP S3-level guideline. Professional mechanical plaque removal (PMPR) remains the cornerstone of non-surgical therapy. However, its limited effectiveness in deep periodontal pockets has prompted interest in adjunctive probiotic approaches. These include Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus brevis, which exhibit antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties.

Intestinal Epithelial-like Cells Stimulated by a Functional Food Ingredient Promote Lysyl Oxidase (LOX) Expression in Osteoblast Precursor Cells via BMP-1 Secretion.

Osteoporosis is characterized by reductions in bone mineral density (BMD) and bone quality. While gut-derived signaling has been increasingly studied in relation to BMD, its contribution to molecular factors associated with bone quality remains less defined. Here, we investigated whether a heat-inactivated, freeze-dried, non-viable preparation of Levilactobacillus brevis AS-1 modulates intestinal epithelial-like cells and thereby promotes lysyl oxidase (LOX), a key enzyme involved in collagen cross-linking. Caco-2 cells were treated using 1 mM sodium butyrate and subsequently stimulated with 1
