Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of Curcumin Using a Deep Eutectic Solvent: Molecular Insights into the Extraction Mechanism.

In this study, five levulinic acid-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were evaluated for the ultrasound-assisted extraction of curcuminoids from Curcuma longa. The relationship between DES composition, intermolecular interactions, and extraction performance was investigated by combining extraction experiments with spectroscopic characterization and quantum chemical calculations. The levulinic acid-ethylene glycol system at a 1:2 molar ratio exhibited the best performance, achieving an extraction yield of 99.9 mg·g-1. FTIR and 1H NMR analyses characterized the interactions within the DES, whil

Bio-mitigation of CO2: The co-production of phycocyanin and optically pure (R)-γ-valerolactone with perfect enantiomeric excess.

To overcome the climate crisis, various greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation strategies have been developed, and every effort has been made to achieve carbon neutrality. Given that petroleum-based industries and the transportation sector emit enormous amounts of GHGs, the product spectra of biorefineries should be expanded beyond drop-in biofuels to include more value-added products. This study aimed to construct a CO2 mitigation system. When CO2 was used as the sole feedstock, value-added phycocyanin and enantioselective γ-valerolactone (GVL) were produced as follows (i) Galdieria sulphuraria was

Electrochemical Depolymerization of Lignin in a Biomass-based Solvent.

Breaking down lignin into smaller units is the key to generate high value-added products. Nevertheless, dissolving this complex plant polyphenol in an environment-friendly way is often a challenge. Levulinic acid, which is formed during the hydrothermal processing of lignocellulosic biomass, has been shown to efficiently dissolve lignin. Herein, levulinic acid was evaluated as a medium for the reductive electrochemical depolymerization of the lignin macromolecule. Copper was chosen as the electrocatalyst due to the economic feasibility and low activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Photodynamic diagnosis with methyl-5-aminolevulinate in squamous intraepithelial lesions of the vulva: Experimental research.

The incidence of the High-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion of the vulva, formerly vulvar intra-epithelial neoplasia is progressively increasing. Today, an early detection and a precise localization of vulvar lesions are still problematic issues, due to the lack of accuracy of the available diagnostic tool. A new approach is the photodynamic diagnosis based on the fluorescence detection of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) in cancer cells after topical application of a cream of methyl amino-levulinic acid. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of photodiagnosis in order to discriminate the

Spherical Silica Modified with Magnesium and Ruthenium-Synthesis, Characterization and Catalytic Properties.

The design of different bimetallic catalysts is an important area of catalytic research in the context of their possible applications in the cascade processes, meeting the requirements of the so-called green chemistry. In this study, such catalysts were obtained by the incorporation of magnesium species into spherical silica, which was in the next step covered with porous silica and modified with ruthenium species. The structure and chemical composition of the materials obtained were determined by XRD measurements, low temperature N2 adsorption/desorption, SEM, ICP-OES and XPS methods. The cat

Biomass-to-biomass strategy: sulphonic acid functionalized covalent organic frameworks for metal-free esterification of biomass-derived acids.

A sulphonic acid functionalized Covalent Organic Framework (COF-SO3H) was synthesized via an ultrasound-assisted aqueous-phase Schiff base condensation, providing a green and efficient route to incorporate Brønsted acidic sites directly into the framework. Characterisation techniques showed that the resulting material exhibits a partially crystalline, hierarchically porous structure with a surface area of 185 m2 g-1. DFT calculations performed using B3LYP reveal a well-defined hexagonal pore topology with uniformly distributed -SO3H groups along the framework edges. The catalytic activity of C

Nanocavity in hollow sandwiched catalysts as substrate regulator for boosting hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-derived carbonyl compounds.

Hydrodeoxygenation of oxygen-rich molecules toward hydrocarbons is attractive yet challenging in the sustainable biomass upgrading. The typical supported metal catalysts often display unstable catalytic performances owing to the migration and aggregation of metal nanoparticles (NPs) into large sizes under harsh conditions. Here, we develop a crystal growth and post-synthetic etching method to construct hollow chromium terephthalate MIL-101 (named as HoMIL-101) with one layer of sandwiched Ru NPs as robust catalysts. Impressively, HoMIL-101@Ru@MIL-101 exhibits the excellent activity and stabili

Conversion of raw lignocellulosic biomass into branched long-chain alkanes through three tandem steps.

Synthesis of branched long-chain alkanes from renewable biomass has attracted intensive interest in recent years, but the feedstock for this synthesis is restricted to platform chemicals. Here, we develop an effective and energy-efficient process to convert raw lignocellulosic biomass (e.g., corncob) into branched diesel-range alkanes through three tandem steps for the first time. Furfural and isopropyl levulinate (LA ester) were prepared from hemicellulose and cellulose fractions of corncob in toluene/water biphasic system with added isopropanol, which was followed by double aldol condensatio

Chemoenzymatic approach towards the synthesis of the antitumor and antileishmanial marine metabolite (+)-Harzialactone A via the stereoselective, biocatalyzed reduction of a prochiral ketone.

As a rich source of biological active compounds, marine natural products have been increasingly screened as candidates for developing new drugs. Among the several marine products and metabolites, (+)-Harzialactone A has drawn considerable attention for its antitumor and antileishmanial activity. In this work a chemoenzymatic approach has been implemented for the preparation of the marine metabolite (+)-Harzialactone A. The synthesis involved a stereoselective, biocatalyzed reduction of the prochiral ketone 4-oxo-5-phenylpentanoic acid or the corresponding esters, all generated by chemical reac

Phosphorous pentoxide mediated synthesis of 5-HMF in ionic liquid at low temperature.

A convenient, mild and environment-friendly dehydration reaction of fructose in ionic liquid using phosphorous pentoxide (P(2)O(5)) has been investigated. The acidic nature of P(2)O(5) along with its hygroscopic properties has been successfully utilized to afford 81.2% yield of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) at 50°C in 60 mins. Phosphoric acid yielded remarkably less 5-HMF even at higher temperature and longer reaction times. The reaction was optimized by varying different parameters and the results indicated that no rehydration products, such as levulinic acid or formic acid, were formed.

Avocado seed waste bioconversion into poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) by using Cobetia amphilecti and ethyl levulinate as a green extractant.

The avocado processing industry produces up to 1.3M tons of agro-waste annually. Chemical analysis of avocado seed waste (ASW) revealed that it is rich in carbohydrates (464.7 ± 21.4 g kg-1) and proteins (37.2 ± 1.5 g kg-1). Optimized microbial cultivation of Cobetia amphilecti using an acid hydrolysate of ASW, generated poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) in a 2.1 ± 0.1 g L-1 concentration. The PHB productivity of C. amphilecti cultivated on ASW extract was 17.5 mg L-1 h-1. The process in which a novel ASW substrate was utilized has been further augmented by using ethyl levulinate as a sustainable

In situ NMR spectroscopy: inulin biomass conversion in ZnCl₂ molten salt hydrate medium-SnCl₄ addition controls product distribution.

The dehydration of inulin biomass to the platform chemicals, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) and levulinic acid (LA), in ZnCl2 molten salt hydrate medium was investigated. The influence of the Lewis acid catalyst, SnCl4, on the product distribution was examined. An in situ(1)H NMR technique was employed to follow the reaction at the molecular level. The experimental results revealed that only 5-HMF was obtained from degradation of inulin biomass in ZnCl2 molten salt hydrate medium, while the LA was gradually becoming the main product when the reaction temperature was increased in the presence

Stereoselective syntheses of dihydroxerulin and xerulinic acid, anti-hypocholesterolemic dyes from the fungus Xerula melanotricha.

The title compounds 2 and 3, which are inhibitors of the biosynthesis of cholesterol, were synthesized in a convergent and perfectly stereoselective manner. In the key step, bromobutenolide 6 (obtained from levulinic acid in two steps) was coupled with either of the novel bis(stannanes) trans,cis,trans-35 or trans,trans,trans-35 [each accessible from 3-(tributylstannyl)allyl alcohol (17) in four steps], giving gamma-alkylidenebutenolide trans,trans,trans-32. This compound was coupled with iododiyne 42 or the bromoenediynoate 44 leading to dihydroxerulin (2) and to the (trimethylsilylethyl)este

Harnessing natural diversity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for enhanced resistance to weak acids.

The production of second-generation bioethanol from lignocellulosic biomass is a promising solution for sustainable energy, yet it faces significant challenges also due to the inhibitory effects of weak acids released during biomass pretreatment, particularly acetic, formic and levulinic acids. This review describes the ability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, with a focus on natural isolates, in overcoming these challenging compounds. Indeed, natural isolates exhibit greater genetic and phenotypic diversity than laboratory and industrial strains, offering unique traits such as enhanced stress tol

The Interventions to Minimize Pain During Photodynamic Therapy With 5-Aminolevulinic Acid for the Treatment of Cutaneous Diseases.

Photosensitization with 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) combined with photodynamic therapy (PDT) is approved in the United States for the treatment of actinic keratosis (AK) and is used off-label for other indications including acne treatment and photo rejuvenation. However, pain, particularly during the initial illumination period, limits the utility of this highly efficacious therapy. Although modifications to conventional ALA-PDT protocols that improve tolerability without diminishing efficacy have been identified, few have been evaluated in randomized, controlled trials, and the number of vari

Novel Insights into the Enrichment Pattern of Aroma and Taste in Cooked Marinated Meat Products of Black Pork via Typical Process Steps.

This study aims to reveal the evolution mechanism of odour and taste active compounds in cooked marinated pork knuckles via typical process steps; among them, the brine soup stage was the most important part due to spices' enriching flavours. These results revealed that the content and diversity of volatile compounds increased due to the addition of spices and heating temperature, imparting a unique aroma. Aldehydes played the main role in the overall odour. Benzaldehyde, hexanal, 1-octen-3-ol, levulinic acid, hydroxyacetone, ethyl octanoate, and 2-pentyl-furan were identified as the most impo

Metal chlorides in ionic liquid solvents convert sugars to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural.

Replacing petroleum feedstocks by biomass requires efficient methods to convert carbohydrates to a variety of chemical compounds. We report the catalytic conversion of sugars giving high yield to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a versatile intermediate. Metal halides in 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride are catalysts, among which chromium (II) chloride is found to be uniquely effective, leading to the conversion of glucose to HMF with a yield near 70%. A wide range of metal halides is found to catalyze the conversion of fructose to HMF. Only a negligible amount of levulinic acid is formed in
