20 specimens of normal pleural mesothelium were investigated with six lectins using isolated cells and tissue specimens as well as two different fixation techniques (glutaraldehyde and formaldehyde) and 10 monoclonal antibodies (MAb) on cytologic preparations only. Lectin binding sites for ConA, WGA, and PNA were present in all cases, whereas binding sites for the lectins HPA, SBA, and UEA-I could never be found. We present the case of a 56-year-old woman diagnosed with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) who showed multiple nodular shadows on a chest x-ray. Helicobacter pylori adherence in the human gastric mucosa involves specific bacterial adhesins and cognate host receptors. BACKGROUND: Sialyl Lewis x (SLeX), sialyl Lewis a (SLeA), Lewis Y (LeY) and the Thomsen-Friedenreich (TF) antigen are carbohydrate motifs that mediate the adhesion between tumour cells and the endothelium. These antigens are usually not expressed in non-malignant tissue. Overexpression of SLeX and SLeA is combined with poor prognosis and malignant relapse. In this study, we analysed the combined expression of SLeX, SLeA, LeY and TF in normal squamous epithelium tissue of the penis shaft, glans and foreskin and in addition of the vagina and vulva.
