Johann Georg Wirsüng (1589-1643) and the pancreatic duct: the prosector of Padua, Italy.

Although his primacy was subsequently challenged by a student, it is now known that Johann Georg Wirsüng, the prosector of Padua, Italy, discovered the human pancreatic duct in 1642 during the dissection of an executed murderer. Instead of publishing his discovery, he engraved a drawing of the duct on a copper plate, from which he made seven or more imprints. The copies were sent to leading anatomists of Europe with the question, "Should I call it an artery or a vein? I never found blood in it ...." Three and a half centuries later, the copper plate remains well preserved and the authors, to t

Executive Functioning and Conduct Problems in Youth with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure: A Scoping Review.

Executive functioning impairment is a core neurobehavioral feature of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) across all diagnostic frameworks and can result from prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). Executive functioning (EF) is also associated with conduct problems, although the precise relationship between the variables in youth with PAE remains unclear. The primary aim of this scoping review is to clarify the relationship between executive functioning and conduct problems in youth with PAE based on existing literature. The secondary aim of the scoping review is to identify gaps in existing lit

AI, libraries, and literacy: revisiting the Journal of the Medical Library Association's policy on the use of generative artificial intelligence in submissions.

In the fall of 2023, the Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA) introduced its policy on generative artificial intelligence (AI) submissions, predicting that these tools would become embedded within the workflows of clinicians, educators, researchers, and students. Those predictions dramatically underestimated AI's impact. On the three-year anniversary of that editorial, we revisit the issue in light of AI's unprecedentedly rapid adoption across knowledge work. We examine the educational challenges AI poses, arguing that excessive cognitive offloading threatens the deep thinking on

Drenched Pages: A Primer on Wet Books.

Molds readily grow on wet books, documents, and other library materials where they ruin them chemically, mechanically, and aesthetically. Poor maintenance of libraries, failures of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, roof leaks, and storm damage leading to flooding can all result in accelerated fungal growth. Moreover, when fungal spores are present at high concentrations in the air, they can be linked to severe respiratory conditions and possibly to other adverse health effects in humans. Climate change and the accompanying storms and floods are making the dual potentia

Confronting the opioid crisis with consumer health information: a look at East Tennessee.

BACKGROUND: Starting in the 1990s, health care providers began prescribing opioids to patients as pain relievers, believing they were safe. However, many patients became addicted to these pills. In 2017, the US Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency to fight the opioid epidemic. This crisis was prevalent in East Tennessee, where many residents were prescribed opioids. CASE PRESENTATION: Librarians at an academic medical center library in East Tennessee analyzed the health information requests related to pain, mental health, and addiction over the last fifte

Asbestos in organochlorine insecticide powder sprinkled between pages of antiquarian books in a library in Japan.

Librarians at a university had planned to check the collection prior to the library renovations that began in 2015. They had previous knowledge of the presence of a light greyish-white powder with an unpleasant odour (hereinafter referred to as 'powder') sprinkled between the pages of antiquarian books in the library archive. The purpose of this study was to identify this powder with the help of experts from both inside and outside the university. The powder was qualitatively analysed using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry after hexane extraction. The powder was examined under a polar

Leveraging community Wi-Fi and spaces for digital health use.

Digital health disparities continue to affect marginalized populations, especially older adults, individuals with low-income, and racial/ethnic minorities, intensifying the challenges these populations face in accessing healthcare. Bridging this digital divide is essential, as digital access and literacy are social determinants of health that can impact digital health use and access to care. This article discusses the potential of leveraging community Wi-Fi and spaces to improve digital access and digital health use, as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with this strategy. Does obstructive sleep apnoea contribute to obesity, hypertension and kidney dysfunction in children? A systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a highly prevalent disorder that may directly contribute to the development of obesity, hypertension and renal injury. Although those associations seem to be clearer in adults, studies in children have revealed conflicting results and updated synthesis of the evidence is lacking. The aim of this systematic review is to summarise the available evidence on the effect of OSA on obesity, systemic blood pressure and kidney function, to help to elucidate whether respiratory interventions to correct OSA would have the potential to improve thos
