Screening for colorectal cancer by nurse endoscopists.

BACKGROUND: Case-control studies have demonstrated that screening by sigmoidoscopy is effective in reducing mortality from colorectal cancer. If nurses performed screening examinations, more patients could be screened and, at current income levels, at a lower cost. METHODS: Two registered nurses and two licensed practical nurses learned to perform examinations with the flexible fiberoptic sigmoidoscope in order to screen patients for colorectal tumors. They performed 1881 independent examinations of outpatients more than 45 years of age. During the same period, 730 examinations were performed

Nurse Roles in Virtual Care Within Team-Based Primary Care: Qualitative Findings From a Multiple Case Study in Two Canadian Jurisdictions.

INTRODUCTION: Canadians, particularly those in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) and Nova Scotia (NS), face ongoing challenges in accessing primary care. To address this concern, many jurisdictions have adopted team-based primary care that enables nurses, physicians, and other providers to collaborate in delivering care. Virtual care has been widely integrated to promote efficiency and quality across team-based primary care. Nurses in primary care teams (i.e., nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses) deliver care virtually; however, details of their role enactment remain

Nosocomial hepatitis A transmission by an adult patient with diarrhea.

Hepatitis A occurred in five registered nurses, a licensed practical nurse, and a recently discharged patient at a community hospital; one of these seven was asymptomatic. All had been exposed to a woman with confirmed hepatitis A who had undergone elective cholecystectomy and who had had vomiting, diarrhea, and fecal incontinence during the eight days before onset of jaundice. Of the 107 hospital workers identified as having at least some exposure to the source patient, 58 (54.2 percent) had no pre-existing antibody to hepatitis A virus (anti-HAV) and were considered susceptible. Six persons,

Improving Nurses' Attitudes Toward Substance Use Disorder: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment.

Patients with substance use disorder (SUD) encounter many barriers to healthcare, including negative attitudes of healthcare personnel. Compared with other healthcare professions, nurses have been reported as having less tolerant attitudes toward patients with SUD. Knowledge acquisition combined with role support has been shown to improve therapeutic attitudes of nurses toward patients with SUD. Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based educational intervention aimed to improve the outcomes of patients at risk and with SUD. SBIRT education has been s

Nurse staffing impact on quality of care in nursing homes: a systematic review of longitudinal studies.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between nurse staffing and quality of care (QoC) in nursing homes continues to receive major attention. The evidence supporting this relationship, however, is weak because most studies employ a cross-sectional design. This review summarizes the findings from recent longitudinal studies. METHODS: In April 2013, the databases PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and PsycINFO were systematically searched. Studies were eligible if they (1) examined the relationship between nurse staffing and QoC outcomes, (2) included only nursing home data, (3) were original research articles des

Ethical behavior among psychiatric nursing staff in Japan: Associations with job stressors and professional self-efficacy-A cross-sectional web-based survey.

Ethical behavior is fundamental to psychiatric nursing practice; however, its association with workplace stressors and professional self-efficacy remains unclear. This study examines these relationships while controlling for demographic characteristics. A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted in Japan from November to December 2024, and data from 575 psychiatric nurses and licensed practical nurses were analyzed. Job stressors were measured using the Psychiatric Nurse Job Stressor Scale, self-efficacy-related factors using the Psychiatric Nurse Self-Efficacy Scales, and ethical behavi

HIV and hospitals between knowledge and stigma.

The advent of effective antiretroviral treatments has led to the reclassification of HIV as a chronic disease for those on an effective treatment plan. However, the well-being of individuals with HIV is adversely affected by a number of factors, including stigma and discrimination, which hinder access to healthcare. To address this issue, it is first necessary to understand the current levels of knowledge and stigma surrounding HIV, and consequently, HIV Outcomes Italy has created a survey with the aim of assessing these levels.A total of 914 healthcare professionals, comprising clinicians, ob

Mom and pop versus the big boys: adult family homes as providers of Medicaid-funded residential care.

This paper compares assisted living apartments (ALs), adult residential care facilities (ARCs), and small adult family homes (AFHs) for Medicaid residents in Washington State, with particular emphasis on the settings, staffing, services, and policies of AFHs. We targeted for enrollment all residents entering an AFH, ARC, or AL setting on Medicaid/state funding in a three-county area of Washington State. We obtained information on 199 settings, interviewing administrative and direct care providers. AFHs are smaller than ARCs and ALs and less likely to be part of a chain, with no significant dif
