Advocacy in Action: Advancing State Policy Change to Strengthen School Nurse Salaries in New Mexico.

School nurses are vital advocates for student health, yet the New Mexico workforce has long faced staffing shortages and significant pay inequities. This article describes a successful policy advocacy campaign by the New Mexico School Nurses Association to achieve salary parity. By collecting and leveraging data, including statewide surveys and salary schedule audits, advocates demonstrated that school nurse compensation failed to match the state-mandated three-tiered pay scale guaranteed to teachers. This effort culminated in the passage of House Bill 195 in 2025, standardizing state-wide sch

Impact of pedagogical approaches on cognitive complexity and motivation to learn: Comparing nursing and engineering undergraduate students.

BACKGROUND: The changing higher education landscape is prompting nurses to rethink educational strategies. Looking beyond traditional professional boundaries may be beneficial. We compare nursing to engineering because engineering has similar accreditation outcome goals and different pedagogical approaches. PURPOSE: We compare students' cognitive complexity and motivation to learn to identify opportunities to share pedagogical approaches between nursing and engineering. METHOD: Cross-sectional data were collected from 1,167 freshmen through super senior students. Comparisons were made across

Evaluation and guide for embedding opioid use disorder education in health professions' curricula.

BACKGROUND: Morbidity and mortality from Opioid Use Disorder is a health crisis in the United States. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a devastating increase of 38.4% in overdose deaths from the 12-month period leading up to June 2019 compared with the 12-month period leading up to May 2020, primarily driven by synthetic opioids. Buprenorphine is an effective medication for opioid use disorder but uptake is slow due in part to lack of provider knowledge, confidence, and negative attitudes/stigma toward patients with OUD. Addressing these barriers in academic training is a promising appr

The midlevel practitioner role: one medical center's experience.

Numerous trends in the current health-care environment have converged to produce an increased emphasis on the role of the midlevel practitioner. Financial constraints head the list, including a mandate for the best care at the lowest rates and a resulting shift from costly specialists to primary care providers. The desire to conserve human and technologic resources requires a practitioner with advanced knowledge and skills to serve as gatekeeper in terms of facilitating access to health care, establishing efficient referral patterns, and developing a holistic care plan. The midlevel practition

Exploring student perceptions of virtual simulation versus traditional clinical and manikin-based simulation.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic immediately changed the way nursing programs provide clinical experiences for pre-licensure nursing programs. Healthcare organizations closed access to clinical experiences for nursing students and universities immediately shifted to remote learning and online virtual simulation. PURPOSE: This research examined students' perceptions of virtual simulation in meeting their learning needs when compared to traditional clinical experiences and manikin-based simulation environments. METHODS: A retrospective multi-site exploratory, descriptive design had 97 partici

Predictors of Substance Use in Registered Nurses: The Role of Psychological Trauma.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) in nursing have individual well-being, patient safety, and licensure/regulatory implications. Literature is scarce related to predicting SUDs in registered nurses; this study included specific items surrounding nurses' psychological trauma. An online survey, consisting of validated scales and investigator-generated items was distributed to 4,000 registered nurses in Indiana with a yield of 1,478 surveys. The World Health Organization: Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) was used as the dependent variable to assess risk of SUDs. Thre

Advancing Nurses' Role to Address Issues Facing Japanese Anesthesia Practice.

Japan is challenged with unique social problems because of its declining birthrate and rapidly aging population. By the year 2025, all of Japan's baby boomers will be 75 years or older, making Japan a "superaging" society. Japanese healthcare expenditures are rapidly climbing because of the need for increasingly complex medical-surgical treatments for this aging population. In addition, a major shortage of anesthesiologists has produced serious threats to patient safety, as well as to quality and timeliness of surgical care. In an attempt to meet the demand for anesthesia services and to ensur

HESI admission assessment (A(2)) examination scores, program progression, and NCLEX-RN success in baccalaureate nursing: an exploratory study of dependable academic indicators of success.

In an effort to meet the demand for well-educated, high-quality nurses, schools of nursing seek to admit those candidates most likely to have both timely progression and first-time success on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Finding the right combination of academic indicators, which are most predictive of success, continues to be an ongoing challenge for entry-level baccalaureate nursing programs across the United States. This pilot study explored the relationship of a standardized admission examination, the Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI) Adm

School Nursing Practice Framework™: The Origin Story and the Data Behind It.

In response to evolving school nurse roles, the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) evaluated and updated its Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice™ using a three-phase process that included surveys, qualitative feedback, and interest-holder engagement. Among 878 survey respondents, most (80%) were familiar with the Framework and found it useful for guiding practice. Strong evidence of associations was observed between Framework familiarity and school nurse demographics, including licensure (χ2(3) = 21.51, p< 0.001), years of experience (χ2(4) = 58.03, p<0.001), and certi

The State of Nurse Anesthetist Practice and Policy: An Integrative Review.

The enactment of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 prompted the Institute of Medicine to release The Future of Nursing report to help guide the necessary changes in nursing to accommodate millions of newly insured individuals. A key point of the campaign was for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to practice at the fullest extent of their licensure to meet the needs of the newly insured population. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) experience the most restricted scope of practice among APRNs. An integrative review was conducted to examine CRNA practice and policy since The

Determinants of Workplace Injuries and Violence Among Newly Licensed RNs.

Workplace injuries, such as musculoskeletal injuries, needlestick injuries, and emotional and physical violence, remain an issue in U.S. hospitals. To develop meaningful safety programs, it is important to identify workplace factors that contribute to injuries. This study explored factors that affect injuries in a sample of newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) in Florida. Regressions were run on models in which the dependent variable was the degree to which the respondent had experienced needlesticks, work-related musculoskeletal injuries, cuts or lacerations, contusions, verbal violence,
