A case of lightning injury with delayed-onset psychiatric and cognitive symptoms.

A case is presented of a man who was struck by lighting but, per his report, developed psychiatric and cognitive symptoms between 1-2 years after the incident. The case is discussed in light of the literature on lightning injury with particular emphasis on the aetiology of delayed symptoms. In this case it appears that some cognitive dysfunction may have occurred at the time of the lightning injury, but deficits were exacerbated after a delayed-onset of PTSD and other psychiatric symptoms. The author suggests possible mechanisms for delayed memory impairment in cases of lightning injury.

[Keraunoparalysis after lightning injury with transient ischaemia and paralysis of an extremity].

Keraunoparalysis is a transient paralysis of the extremities, which results from close contact with lightning. In this case report, a 58-year-old man came in close contact with a bolt of lightning. His left foot was pulseless, pale, cold and with absence of capillary refill. His symptoms were initially interpreted as arterial occlusion, and therefore bypass surgery and even amputation were considered. However, his symptoms resolved within hours. Therefore, clinicians must consider keranoparalysis as a differential diagnosis in patients struck by lightning.

Severe rhabdomyolysis without renal injury associated with lightning strike.

Lightning strikes cause injuries in multiple systems and organs. Early recognition of lightning injury syndromes and anticipation of harmful complications can improve outcomes for these patients. The author has presented a case report of a patient who was struck by lightning and exhibited extensive soft tissue injury with myoglobinuria. He was treated with delayed fasciotomy and had evidence of severe muscle injury with markedly elevated creatine kinase levels that gradually improved with aggressive fluid infusion. The patient did not require alkalinization of urine, mannitol, or dialysis, and

Neurological and neuroimaging sequelae of lightning injury: a retrospective study and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Lightning injuries (LI) can affect multiple organs, including the peripheral and central nervous system (CNS). Neuroimaging studies in LI are scarce, and it is unknown whether off-target changes in the CNS occur. METHODS: Retrospective review of patients who were treated in two neurology tertiary referral centers for sequelae of LI between 2004-2024 and had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) of the CNS. A narrative literature search was performed to identify other studies on neuroimaging after LI. RESULTS: Of 31 patients (39% female, median age 38 years)

Complete pacemaker failure following lightning strike injury: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Modern cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) have mechanisms that prevent damage from external electric shocks, and malfunction following accidental electrocution is rare. However, the effects of lightning injuries in patients with CIEDs are uncertain. CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old man with a dual-chamber pacemaker due to complete heart block was struck by a lightning while farming. He had no serious injury at the time and sought medical evaluation 1 month later, when he presented with asymptomatic bradycardia. Device interrogation suggested major battery and

[Lightning injuries: case report of a 17-year-old man and a brief review of the literature].

Lightning injury is one of the most frequent injuries caused by a natural phenomenon, but the risk of being struck by lightning is low. The most vulnerable subjects for lightning injuries are individuals who work in open fields. Although lightning injuries may involve all organ systems, injuries to the cardiovascular system and central nervous system are the most frequent. Burns, tinnitus, blindness and secondary blunt trauma have also been reported. Even though immediate death through lightning-induced cardiac arrest is well documented, the majority of cases reported in the literature describ

The Unexpected Hidden Danger of Lightning Strike: A Report of a Rare Case of Bladder Injury.

Lightning strikes are a rare but potentially devastating cause of injury, particularly in children. Clinical manifestations range from transient neurological disturbances and cardiac arrhythmias to severe burns, auditory damage, and multisystem trauma. Early recognition and prompt resuscitative measures are essential for improving outcomes, as lightning victims often have a high potential for successful resuscitation if treated rapidly. While musculoskeletal, cardiac, and neurological complications are commonly reported, genitourinary injuries, especially bladder trauma, are exceedingly uncomm

A Storm, An Explosion, and Flying Rocks - An Unusual Injury due to a Lightning Strike in the Mountains.

BACKGROUND: Most injuries observed in victims of lightning strikes can be explained by electrothermal phenomena. Blast penetrating injuries caused by a lightning-strike-induced explosion of a nearby structure are rarely reported. CASE PRESENTATION: Here reported is the case of a patient with numerous mixed injuries caused by a lightning strike, including deep lacerations of both hips and thighs with rock fragments embedded in the wounds. Surgical removal of rock fragments from deep areas of the right hip and right lower leg was necessary. The cause of the formation of rock missiles was the li

Inner ear damage following electric current and lightning injury: a literature review.

Audiovestibular sequelae of electrical injury, due to lightning or electric current, are probably much more common than indicated in literature. The aim of the study was to review the impact of electrical injury on the cochleovestibular system. Studies were identified through Medline, Embase, CINAHL and eMedicine databases. Medical Subject Headings used were 'electrical injury', 'lightning', 'deafness' and 'vertigo'. All prospective and retrospective studies, case series and case reports of patients with cochlear or vestibular damage due to lightning or electrical current injury were included.

Case Report: Burns Through Metal - Unique Pattern Of First Lightning Strike Injury In Israeli Army.

This case report presents a 19-year-old Israeli soldier who sustained injury as a result of a lightning strike during an outdoor military activity. The patient was found in a state of altered consciousness and respiratory distress. He suffered multiple second-degree burns to the neck, chest and abdomen area, corresponding to the locations of his metal identification tag, rifle and belt buckle. Lightning transmission through these metal objects caused considerable thermal burns at contact sites. The patient was treated conservatively until wound healing and stabilization of respiratory function

When lightning strikes the heart: a rare injury with features of non‑ST elevation myocardial infarction - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Injuries from lightning strikes are infrequent but potentially life-threatening, mainly caused by indirect electrical injuries. Although various organ systems can be involved, the effects of electric current on the cardiovascular system can manifest as electrocardiographic (ECG) changes, elevated cardiac-specific enzymes, and cardiac and respiratory arrest, although rare. This case report aims to describe the ECG changes that occur due to lightning strikes and resemble the features of non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old man with no his

Lightning Strike-Induced Cutaneous Burns and Airway Injury: A Case Report Highlighting Recurrent Extubation Failure in a Critically Ill Patient.

INTRODUCTION: Lightning strikes cause a unique spectrum of cutaneous burn injuries that differ substantially from conventional thermal or high-voltage electrical burns. Despite the well-documented systemic lethality of lightning injuries, the burn-specific sequelae-including airway involvement and its contribution to ventilatory failure-remain underreported in the burn literature. CASE REPORT: We present a 31-year-old woman who sustained multiple cutaneous burns following a lightning strike, including a circumferential necklace-pattern burn to the neck, a large midline torso burn, and burns t
