Plywood is widely used in construction, such as for flooring and interior walls, as well as in the manufacture of household items such as furniture and cabinets. Such items are made of wood veneers that are bonded together with adhesives such as urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins1,2. Researchers in academia and industry have long aimed to synthesize lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives using biomass-derived lignin, a phenolic polymer that can be used to substitute the petroleum-derived phenol3-6. However, lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives are less attractive to ply

Lignin is the main component of lignocellulose and the largest source of aromatic substances on the earth. Biofuel and bio-chemicals derived from lignin can reduce the use of petroleum products. Current advances in lignin catalysis conversion have facilitated many of progress, but understanding the principles of catalyst design is critical to moving the field forward. In this review, the factors affecting the catalysts (including the type of active metal, metal particle size, acidity, pore size, the nature of the oxide supports, and the synergistic effect of the metals) are systematically revi

We report a modular and scalable synthetic strategy for constructing a diverse library of oligomeric lignin model compounds (LMCs). Using bromoketoester building blocks, iterative β-O-4 aryl ether couplings under mild conditions enabled the efficient assembly of dimers, trimers, and tetramers. The developed approach is compatible with H, G, and S lignin units and can be extended to cinnamyl alcohols and β-5 linkages, mimicking the structural diversity of native lignin. Linear and convergent routes were demonstrated, and total reductions afforded final LMCs representative of lignins from variou

Formaldehyde is a toxic metabolite generated in the bacterial catabolism of lignin-derived aromatic compounds (LDACs) through the oxidative O-demethylation of methoxylated aromatics. Microbial cell factories designed to convert LDACs to commodity chemicals should ideally utilize formaldehyde to improve carbon efficiency and strain fitness. Methylotrophs and natural degraders of LDACs have evolved various strategies for utilizing formaldehyde. These range from cofactor-dependent detoxification systems that extract reducing equivalents to cyclical pathways that synthesize building blocks. In add

Corrosion is a significant problem that negatively affects a wide range of structures and buildings, resulting in their premature failure, which causes safety hazards and significant economic loss. For this reason, various approaches have been developed to prevent or minimize the effects of corrosion, including corrosion inhibitors. Recently, biobased inhibitors have gained a certain interest thanks to their unique properties, eco-friendliness, and availability. Among all the green precursors, lignin is of particular interest, being a natural polymer that can be obtained from different sources

3D printing of lignocellulosic biomass (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) has attracted increasing attention by using this abundant, sustainable, and ecofriendly material. While cellulose can be easily tailored into a highly viscous ink for 3D printing, after solvent evaporation, the final printed structures become highly porous, fragile, and easily fall apart in water due to its hydrophilic nature. Lignin, another crucial component of natural lignocellulose, has not yet been reported for ink printing due to its unfavorable rheological behavior. Herein, a low-cost direct ink printing strat

As millions of tons of kraft lignin are being wasted, a potential application is to use its crosslinking reactions to build thermosetting bio adhesives. However, the crosslinking reactions between lignin molecules are not fully understood. The present study aims to elucidate the crosslinking reactions of the model lignin compound guaiacylglycerol-β-guaiacyl ether (GGE) via one-step hydroxymethylation/ amination with formaldehyde and diethylenetriamine (DETAM), or one-step glyoxylation/ amination with glyoxal and DETAM via liquid NMR techniques such as 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 2D 1H-13C, and 1H-15N HSQ

Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) are usually produced from lignin solution through supersaturation. The structure of the lignin in solution is still poorly understood due to structural variability of isolated lignins. Here, lignins were extracted from different plants to establish a general pattern of their structure in several lignin solvents. Lignin molecules (lignin subunits) and larger aggregates were observed in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethylene glycol (EG) and 0.1 N NaOD solutions by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). It was proposed that the aggregates were composed of lignin subunits

The intensive application of pesticides in agriculture suffers from poor dispersion, runoff, and rapid degradation, which has raised serious environmental and economic concerns. This study investigates the use of lignin-based nanoparticles (LNPs) as sustainable carriers for the controlled delivery of methoxyfenozide (MFZ), enhancing delivery efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized using alkaline lignin (ALN) and lignosulfonate (SLN), both grafted with poly-(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) biopolymers. Both systems achieved 3 wt % MFZ loading with

In this study, the amination-based modification of kraft lignin (KL) was implemented through phenolization treatment combined with the Mannich reaction to synthesize the aminated lignin (APKL) with high nitrogen content. Afterward, the chemical structural changes and reaction mechanism of KL during the modification process were surveyed in depth using diverse analytical techniques. The results revealed that the phenolization treatment markedly raised the active site number in KL from 5.79 to 25.5 mmol/g, which led to a significant increase in the chemical reactivity of KL. Meanwhile, the amine

In this work, altering cellulose accessibility, surface lignin area, and lignin hydrophobicity of Poplar Detritus (PD) was implemented through organic acid-assisting hydrothermal pretreatment, co-producing reducing sugars, xylo-oligosaccharides, furfural, and organic acids. After being treated under the optimal conditions [160 °C, 90 min, 1:10 solid-liquid ratio and 1 % p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH) concentration], the yield of reducing sugar increased by 8-folds, and the elimination of lignin and xylan were 63.7 % and 87.7 % respectively. Co-manufacturing of furfural, xylo-oligosaccharides,

In this study activated carbons were produced from the biorefinery waste lignin (Asian lignin (AL) USA & Inbicon lignin (IL) Denmark) to evaluate their potential in waste water treatment and as energy storage devices. These products were studied for their surface characteristics as a function of reaction temperature, time, and catalyst loading accordingly. Under the conditions with a temperature lower than 750 °C and within a reaction time of 1 h, the catalytic reaction of alkali-carbon bonding occurred from the external surface, and a turbostratic disorder structure with a large aromatic ring

Lignin, a biopolymer derived from plant biomass, is recognized as a highly promising substance for developing self-healing polymers owing to its dynamic linkages and functional groups. This paper provides a thorough review of lignin-based self-healing polymer, from the process of extracting lignin, chemical modification, synthesis techniques such as via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, crosslinking with polymers like polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan, and reactions with isocyanates to create lignin-based networks with reversible interactions. This work

Lignin is considered a valuable renewable resource for building new chemicals and materials, particularly resins and polymers. The aromatic nature of lignin suggests a synthetic route for synthesizing organic aerogels (AGs) similar to the aqueous polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde (FA). The structure and reactivity of lignin largely depend on the severity of the isolation method used, which challenges the development of new organic and carbon materials. Resorcinol aerogels are considered a source of porous carbon material, while lignin-based aerogels also possess great potential

Converting industrial/agricultural lignin-rich wastes to efficient, cost-effective materials for electrochemical devices (e.g., fuel cells) can aid in both bio- and energy economy. A major limitation of fuel cells is the weak ion conductivity within the ~2-30-nm thick, ion-conducting polymer (ionomer)-based catalyst-binder layer over electrodes. Here, we strategically sulfonated kraft lignin (a by-product of pulp and paper industries) to design ionomers with varied ion exchange capacities (IECs) (LS x; x = IEC) that can potentially overcome this interfacial ion conduction limitation. We measur

Lignin has interesting functionalities to be exploited in adhesives for medicine, foods and textiles. Nanoparticles (NPs) < 100 nm coated with poly (L-lysine), PL and poly(L-glutamic acid) PGA were prepared from the laccase treated lignin to coat nanocellulose fibrils (CNF) with heat. NPs ca. 300 nm were prepared, β-casein coated and cross-linked with transglutaminase (Tgase) to agglutinate chamois. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used to characterize polymerized lignin, while zeta potential and dynamic light scattering (DLS) to ensur

Precipitated kraft lignin from black liquor was converted into green diesel in three steps. A mild Ni-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis using 2-propanol generated a lignin residue in which the ethers, carbonyls, and olefins were reduced. An organocatalyzed esterification of the lignin residue with an in situ prepared tall oil fatty acid anhydride gave an esterified lignin residue that was soluble in light gas oil. The esterified lignin residue was coprocessed with light gas oil in a continous hydrotreater to produce a green diesel. This approach will enable the development of new

In industrial process, acidification causes non-sulfonated lignin insolubility. The flocculants poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (pDADMAC) and bovine blood (BB) also caused lignin insolubility while cationic polyacrylamide, chitosan, and soy protein PF 974 were ineffective. Turbidity determined optimal flocculant, but turbidity magnitude with BB was greater than expected. pDADMAC caused negative lignin Zeta potential to became positive, but BB-lignin Zeta potential was always negative. Insoluble lignin did not gravity sediment, and flocculant-lignin mixtures were centrifuged. Pellet and

The heme environment of lignin peroxidase (LiP) has been investigated by electronic absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Native LiP was a pentacoordinate, high-spin ferric iron with a high-spin absorption band at 634 nm and g values at 5.86 and 2.07 in the EPR spectrum. Upon thermal inactivation, calcium ions were released from the enzyme and the Soret absorption decreased and red-shifted about 2 nm, the high-spin absorption band at 634 nm disappeared, and a low-spin absorption band appeared at 532 nm. The EPR spectrum and the temperature dependence of electronic

Lignin prepared by acid and enzyme hydrolysis of a softwood mixture adsorbs acetone, butanol, and other alcohols while showing only a slight uptake of glucose. Adsorption of butanol is independent of temperature in the range of 30-65 degrees C. The Polanyi theory fits adsorption for the linear alcohols methanol through hexanol with values of DeltaS and Delta(mu) ranging from 2.6 to 26 J mol(-1) K(-1)and -0.8 to -8 kJ/mol. The adsorption capacity is given by Q (g alcohol/g lignin) = KC(*). Where C(*) is the equilibrium alcohol concentration (g/mL), K = epsilon(W)exp (Delta/R), and epsilon(w) is
