Effects of chorda-lingual nerve injury and repair on human taste.

Citric acid detection threshold and magnitude response were measured on the anterior tongue in 10 patients with unilateral chorda-lingual nerve transections before and after repair. Fungiform taste buds were analysed by videomicroscopy. Preliminary data suggests that humans can regenerate fungiform taste buds and recover some taste sensitivity after repair.

Lingual nerve injury associated with superior border wire fixation.

The sagittal ramus osteotomy of the mandible is the most frequently performed orthognathic surgical procedure. Stabilization of the osteotomy may be accomplished by rigid internal or wire fixation. This article illustrates lingual nerve injury following a bilateral sagittal ramus osteotomy of the mandible and fixation with a superior border wire. The etiology and surgical management of this injury are described.

Does Low-Level Laser Therapy Affect Recovery of Lingual and Inferior Alveolar Nerve Injuries?

PURPOSE: Iatrogenic damage to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and lingual nerve (LN) may occur during routine oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures. The primary aim of this study was to determine, using a prospective, double-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial, whether the proportion of nerve-injured patients with postoperative neurosensory improvement over a 3-month period differed significantly between a control group and a low-level laser therapy (LLLT) group. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study sample consisted of 35 patients with iatrogenic nerve injury due to third molar odont

A bioabsorbable collagen nerve cuff (NeuraGen) for repair of lingual and inferior alveolar nerve injuries: a case series.

PURPOSE: This study describes the results of using NeuraGen (Integra LifeSciences, Plainsboro, NJ) as a nerve cuff for repair of lingual and inferior alveolar nerve injuries following third molar surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight female patients received a total of 9 NeuraGen cuffs for repair of lingual (6) or inferior alveolar (3) nerves. All injuries were treated within 3 to 7 months following injury. All patients were evaluated by mechanoceptive and nociceptive testing via brush directional discrimination, pin-prick pressure and thermal sensation. Lateral trap-door osteotomy of the mand

Nerve injury associated with orthognathic surgery. Part 3: lingual, infraorbital, and optic nerves.

In the final paper of this 3-part series we review the incidence of injuries to the lingual, infraorbital, and optic nerves during orthognathic operations. We know of few published studies on the incidence of injuries to the lingual or infraorbital nerves, but in most cases they are thought to result from traction and are predominantly temporary. The incidence of permanent injury to the lingual nerve was 2/100 patients (95% CI 1 to 3/100) or 0/100 nerves (95% CI 0 to 1/100). The methods used to assess injury to the infraorbital nerve differed so it was not possible to calculate the incidence.

Comparison of current perception threshold electrical testing to clinical sensory testing for lingual nerve injuries.

PURPOSE: We performed a retrospective study of lingual nerve injury assessment comparing the techniques of current perception threshold testing versus clinical sensory testing. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We designed and implemented a cross-sectional study and enrolled a patient sample with lingual nerve injuries presenting for treatment to the principal investigator. The predictor variables were clinical sensory testing modalities (ie, temperature, nocioception, vibration, 2-point discrimination, brush stroke, and von Frey monofilament perception). The primary outcome variable was the electrical c

Etiology of lingual nerve injuries in the third molar region: a cadaver and histologic study.

PURPOSE: It has been suggested that different etiologies of lingual nerve damage in the third molar area will produce a different clinical and histologic appearance in the nerve. If the clinical and histologic pictures were different, it could result in different treatments being recommended. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight preserved cadavers (16 lingual nerves) were used for this study. As far as possible, the nerves were left in situ and damaged in a way that could be envisaged during third molar surgery. In each case, the damaged sections of nerve were photographed, resected, embedded in para

The clinical view for dissection of the lingual nerve with application to minimizing iatrogenic injury.

The importance of the position of the lingual nerve in the oral cavity cannot be understated for dentists and oral surgeons. Therefore, the location of the lingual nerve with various positions of the tongue is important. However, most dental and medical students are taught oral cadaveric anatomy where tissues are fixed. Therefore, the focus of this article is to demonstrate how the lingual nerve moves based on tongue movement in fresh tissues and how this is important for dentists and oral surgeons. Clin. An experimental study on the recovery of the lingual nerve after injury with or without repair.

The recovery of the mechanosensitive and thermosensitive afferent fibres in the lingual branch of the trigeminal nerve has been studied using electrophysiological techniques in cats after nerve section without repair or after section followed by nerve repair 12 weeks later. In the unrepaired group, recovery was permitted for 24 weeks, and after delayed repair there was a further recovery period of either 12 or 24 weeks. The characteristics of the regenerated fibres were then investigated, and data were also compared with those from normal control animals and from animals which had undergone im

Outcomes of Direct Lingual Nerve Repair After an Injury: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review with meta-analysis to investigate the outcomes of direct lingual nerve repair after injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The studies in this review were compiled by using PubMed/Medline and ScienceDirect, which were searched by a single reviewer (M.K.) from their inception until March 10, 2020. Two independent reviewers (M.K. and V.B.Z.) who were blinded to each other's assessments reviewed full-text articles to assess for study inclusion. Outcomes were dichotomized as either functional sensory recovery (FSR) or no FSR. Clinical

Dexamethasone treatment for bilateral lingual nerve injury following orotracheal intubation.

Lingual nerve injury is a rare complication of general anesthesia. The causes of lingual nerve injury following general anesthesia are multifactorial; possible mechanisms may include difficult laryngoscopy, prolonged anterior mandibular displacement, improper placement of the oropharyngeal airway, macroglossia and tongue compression. In this report, we have described a case of bilateral lingual nerve injury that was associated with orotracheal intubation for open reduction and internal fixation of the left distal radius fracture in a 61-year-old woman. In this case, early treatment with dexame

[Anatomical rationale for lingual nerve injury prevention during mandibular block].

The topographic and anatomical study of lingual nerve structural features was done. It was revealed that during mandibular anesthesia possible lingual nerve injury can occur if puncture needle is lower than 1 cm. of molars occlusal surface level. The position of the lingual nerve varies withmandible movements. At the maximum open mouth lingual nerve is not mobile and is pressed against the inner surface of the mandibular ramus by the medial pterygoid muscle and the temporal muscle tendon. When closing the mouth to 1.25±0.2 cmfrom the physiological maximum, lingual nerve is displaced posteriorl

Evaluation of factors predictive of lingual nerve injury in third molar surgery.

The aim of this study was to investigate risk factors for temporary and permanent lingual nerve injury after extraction of mandibular third molars. It was based on a 4-year prospective study of 2134 consecutive mandibular third molar operations in 1384 consecutive day case patients. During the study period (1994-1998) data were collected prospectively on patient, dental and surgical factors and correlated with lingual nerve injury using Student's t test, xi(2) and multiple logistic regression analysis. The incidence of temporary and permanent lingual nerve injury was 1 and 0.3%, respectively,

The effect of nerve growth factor on functional recovery after injury to the chorda tympani and lingual nerves.

Nerve growth factor (NGF) is known to ameliorate central changes and enhance the regeneration of damaged axons in the early stages after peripheral nerve injury. We have assessed the long-term outcome of placing NGF at a nerve repair site by determining the functional characteristics of several groups of sensory afferent and autonomic efferent fibres in the cat lingual nerve. Six months after entubulation repair, with or without the incorporation of NGF, the recovery of secretomotor and vasomotor efferents was determined by recording salivary flow from the submandibular gland and temperature c
