Canker sores and cold sores are common, relatively banal diseases of the oral mucosa and lips, occurring most often in young persons. Some otherwise healthy patients may have a more severe variant, such as major aphthous ulcers, recurring lesions of aphthous stomatitis, or acute herpetic gingivostomatitis. Other patients may present with severe recurrent herpes simplex labialis or chronic oral candidiasis, and in these patients an immunodeficiency state must be considered.

Tremor in Parkinson's disease is most frequently studied in the limbs, even though it also occurs in the vocal tract. In the current study, we assessed the presence of tongue, lip and jaw tremor in 34 individuals with Parkinson's disease (IwPD) and 25 controls (CS). We used electromagnetic articulography sensors attached to the tongue, the lips, and the jaw to measure orolingual tremor while the participants were performing a series of tasks. Additionally, we acoustically measured frequency and amplitude tremor of the voice in a sustained phonation task. Our findings revealed that IwPD showed

This procedural report details the case of a 10-year-old boy with oral Crohn's disease successfully treated with intralesional corticosteroid injections. The intervention used topical anesthesia with a eutectic mixture of lidocaine 2.5%/prilocaine 2.5% cream followed by intralesional triamcinolone acetonide. This approach safely and effectively reduced patient discomfort while allowing for an acceptable and durable clinical outcome.

BACKGROUND: Life-threatening anomalies, such as congenital heart disease (CHD) must be identified in patients with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) to minimize perioperative risk. Nevertheless, screening practices vary highly among cleft teams and programs, and little is known about the prevalence and clinical significance of CHD in nonsyndromic CL/P patients. Through a systematic literature review, this study examines the demographics and severity of CHD in the nonsyndromic CL/P population. The implications of concomitant CHD in providing safe and comprehensive cleft care both in the United Sta

BACKGROUND: Lip metastases are rare clinical events that are frequently mistaken for other diagnoses. For sarcomatoid lung carcinoma, a rare histologic variant of non-small cell lung cancer, the incidence and pattern of cutaneous spread is poorly understood.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 79-year-old African American man with a rapidly progressive upper lip cutaneous lesion that provided the first evidence of distant metastatic spread of sarcomatoid lung carcinoma.
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first reported case of lip metastasis in sarcomatoid lung carcinoma. It highlights the impor

Kawasaki Disease (KD) is an acute systemic vasculitis of unknown etiology. In many developed countries, KD has replaced rheumatic heart disease as the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children. Among the classical criteria for a diagnosis of KD are oral manifestations such as strawberry tongue, erythematous cracked lip, and oropharyngeal mucositis. We report the case of a 24-year-old Saudi female with a history of Kawasaki disease who presented to our oral medicine clinic with recurrent painless swelling of the upper lip. As lip swelling has not previously been reported as an oral ma

BACKGROUND: To analyze the global, regional, and national epidemiological trends of lip and oral cancer (LOC) diseases attributable to tobacco from 1990 to 2021, with an emphasis on health inequalities.
METHODS: Utilizing the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 study, we evaluated the temporal trends in tobacco-attributable LOC mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). We further analyzed how LOC mortality and DALYs varied by age, period, and birth cohort. The Bayesian Age-Period-Cohort (BAPC) model was employed to project trends from 2021 to 2050. BACKGROUND: Lip, oral and pharyngeal cancers make up a small percentage of total cancer cases worldwide and have reported lower rates of cancer-related deaths globally in 2020, but their 5-year survival rate in either early or advanced stages is different. The study evaluated the global incidence, mortality, risk factors, and temporal trends by age, gender, and geographical locations of lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal cancer.
METHODS: Incidence and mortality rates were extracted from Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5) volumes I-XI, the Nordic Cancer Registries (NORDCAN), the Surveilla

Development of orofacial component involves a complex series of events. Any insult to this significant event can lead to various orofacial cleft defects. The main categories among orofacial clefts are isolated cleft palate and cleft lip with or without cleft palate. There have been many factors implicated in the development of the anomaly. The environmental factors which contribute and the genes which predispose to the condition remain obscure despite decades of research. Though it is generally agreed that folic acid deficiency is a contributory factor for non-syndromic cleft lip and palate, f

PURPOSE: This study sought to provide comprehensive insights into the size of articulatory movements (stroke amplitudes) in talkers with Parkinson's disease (PD) and determine the extent to which hypokinesia is related to perceived articulatory subsystem impairment severity.
METHOD: Forty talkers with PD and 40 controls participated. Perceptual ratings of the articulatory and phonatory subsystem impairment severity were obtained for all talkers with PD. On the basis of these ratings, the PD group was divided into talkers with and without an articulatory impairment (18 PDdys+artic, 22 PDdys-ar

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) frequently occurs in conjunction with extracardiac developmental anomalies, including cleft malformations. The clinical impact of concomitant cleft disease on the surgical management of CHD has not been studied. We evaluated cardiac surgical outcomes in patients with concomitant CHD and cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P).
METHODS: Patients with CHD + CL/P managed at our institution between January 2004 and December 2018 were included. Demographic, operative, and follow-up data were retrospectively collected and analyzed using SAS 9.4. Chi-square tests we

Dermatologic diseases are often associated with oral manifestations and sometimes the oral lesions are the sole presenting features of the disease. Diagnosing a dermatologic disease based on its oral manifestations is a challenge, especially in the absence of associated cutaneous lesions. Lichen planus is a common dermatologic disease that affects the oral mucosa in the adult population. While some patients have concomitant oral and cutaneous lesions, the oral lesions are persistent and seen for years together even after the cutaneous lesions have healed. Herein, we present two cases of oral l

The worldwide incidence trends of the lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal cancers (LOCPs) need to be updated. This study aims to examine the temporal incidence trends of LOCPs from 1990 to 2017, using the latest Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study data to explore sex, age, and regional differences. GBD incidence data for LOCPs were driven by population cancer registries and were estimated from mortality data. Age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) were directly extracted from the 2017 GBD database to calculate the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) over the study period. Incidence trend
