Sclerosing sweat duct carcinoma (SSDC) is a rare cutaneous neoplasm. A 28-year-old man presented with 2-3 years history of a tetter on his upper lip, and a 3 cm x 4 cm lymph node was palpable in the left submandibular area. MRI showed a mass in the upper lip extending into the buccal mucosa and orbicular muscle, and multiple cervical lymph nodes metastasis on both sides was suspected. A biopsy was performed to have revealed syringomatous carcinoma. The patient underwent operation of extended removal of the upper lip along with right upper neck dissection and left radical neck dissection. 8 cm

The present study evaluated the dynamics of metabolic changes in intracranial metastases and distant normal-appearing brain after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Forty neoplasms were evaluated with single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) both before and after treatment. From one to six examinations (median, 3) were done in each individual case during follow-up. At the time of each investigation additional (1)H-MRS was obtained from the normal-appearing brain distant from the radiosurgical target. Investigated metabolites included N-acetylaspartate (NAA), choline-contain

BACKGROUND: Angiosarcomas are rare soft tissue malignant tumors with dismal prognosis. Head and neck involvement is uncommon (5%) and usually affects the scalp or facial skin.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We present the case of an inferior lip mucosal low-grade angiosarcoma in a 15-year-old boy treated exclusively with surgery. One and a half years after treatment, the patient was free of signs of recurrence. Prompt and accurate diagnosis with adequate imaging modalities and multidisciplinary treatment are crucial for optimal management of these neoplasms.
CONCLUSION: Lip mucosal involvement is exce

A 64-year-old woman presented with a 2-week history of an asymptomatic mass involving the lower lip. Histopathological examination showed a well-circumscribed tumour composed of many lobules separated by thin, fibrous connective tissue. Individual lobules were composed of round or polyhedral tumour cells, which had a characteristic finely granular and vacuolated cytoplasm and eccentric hyperchromatic nuclei. Positive staining was observed with Periodic acid-Shiff, and immunohistochemistry for cytokeratin, alpha-1 antitrypsin, and S-100 protein resulting in a final diagnosis of acinic cell carc

Lip cancer is the most frequent malignant neoplasm of the oral cavity; however, there is no information available on the incidence of this type of cancer in Mexico. This study provides information about the clinico-pathological features of lip cancer patients admitted at a cancer hospital in Mexico City during an 11-year period and describes the treatment modalities performed and their results. A total of 113 patients were studied. There were 74 men (65.5%) and 39 women (34.5%), ranging in age from 14 to 106 years (mean 70 years). In 53 cases (46.9%) an association was found between the diseas

Desmoplastic malignant melanoma is a rare neoplasm consisting primarily of spindle-shaped melanoma cells embedded in a fibrous stroma, with approximately 6% of cases occurring in the lip. A literature search revealed that most reported cases occur in sun-exposed areas in older men. Few cases of desmoplastic malignant melanoma of the lip in young people (in their mid-twenties) have been described. We report 6 previously undocumented cases of labial desmoplastic malignant melanoma occurring in young individuals and review 20 cases from the literature. Physicians should consider the possibility o

BACKGROUND: The lips represent one of the most important parts of the facial complex because of a large number and variety of injuries that may be related to this anatomic site such as inflammatory processes and benign and malignant tumors. The aim of this study was to describe the pathologic features of the lip lesions seen in a Brazilian outpatient service.
METHODS: Data from 6231 samples of oral biopsies were retrieved from the files of 5 anatomic pathology services in Fortaleza, Brazil. After data have been collected, the lesions were separated in 3 groups: G1 (nonmalignant dysplastic les

Metastases of melanoma rarely occur in the oral cavity, and very few reports have been published. They are chiefly localized in the tonsil, tongue and lip, regardless of the primary site of the neoplasm. A 76-year-old woman presented a brownish berry-shaped floating neoformation at the upper lip, for which she was hospitalized at the Maxillofacial Surgery Unit, Italian Stomatologic Institute, Milan. Medical history revealed that 6 years previously, in 1998, she underwent enucleation of the right eye due to the presence of a melanoma of the ciliary body. The labial neoplasm was removed and at h

Lipomas of the upper lip are among the rarest adipose tissue neoplasms in the oral cavity. The standard treatment for lipomas involves surgical removal, which can be performed using conventional or laser techniques. This case report discusses a 71-year-old male patient with swelling on the left side of his upper lip, clinically diagnosed as an oral lipoma. The lesion was surgically removed under local anesthesia using a combination of diode laser surgery and a blunt scalpel. This approach facilitated the complete removal of the lesion with reduced operating time, minimal damage to surrounding

BACKGROUND: Tooth agenesis, the congenital absence of one or more teeth, can be diagnosed in children in the first decade of life. Tooth agenesis is a phenotypic feature of conditions such as ectodermal dysplasia, cleft lip, cleft palate, Down syndrome, and Van der Woude syndrome. Tooth agenesis can also be nonsyndromic. Studies have shown an association between the genetic determinants of nonsyndromic tooth agenesis and neoplasms in adulthood.
METHODS: This review of the implications of tooth agenesis as a risk indicator for neoplasms in adulthood is based on a search of PubMed to identify p

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumors are uncommon and constitute 2-6.5 % of all head and neck neoplasms. Tumors of minor salivary gland origin account for less than 25 % of all salivary gland neoplasms. Papillary cystadenoma of salivary glands is a rare benign epithelial neoplasm characterized by multicystic growth in which the epithelium exhibits adenomatous proliferation. Papillary cystadenoma of minor salivary glands most frequently involves the lip, buccal mucosa, and palate. This tumor typically presents as a slow-growing, painless mass, usually with diameter of less than 1 cm and clinical r

A follow-up study of 224 male patients from Rochester, Minnesota, diagnosed with cryptorchidism during the period from 1935 through 1974 was conducted to assess the frequency of subsequent testicular neoplasms. Age-specific rates for testicular neoplasm in this community were used to estimate an expected number for comparison with that observed. Two malignant testicular neoplasms have occurred in this cohort; thus, the standardized morbidity ratio was 11.4 (95% confidence interval, 1.4 to 41.1). Of the 158 patients born in the community, 11% were known to have birth weights of less than 2,500

BACKGROUND: Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a cutaneous neoplasm, which is similar to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) clinically, cytologically, and histopathologically. Surgical resection is the first choice for treating KA, but it may be impractical when a KA is located in a cosmetically sensitive area.
OBSERVATION: We describe a patient with a nodule on the right upper lip. We performed a surgical biopsy to obtain a histopathological diagnosis. Specimen analysis revealed a diagnosis of KA. As the tumor was located in the upper lip, a direct resection may require a flap to reconstruct the lip shape;

This paper comes with a purpose to help the clinician as how to arrive at a logical differential diagnosis when an upper lip mass is encountered in day-to-day practice. The labial mucosa is commonly traumatized. One must be aware of the type of structures contained in the mucosa of the area of a lesion as well as the patients habits since they may relate to a lesion presented for diagnosis. It also helps them to procure a sound knowledge of the lesions by describing the lesions according to their clinical appearance and to aid the clinician in arriving at a differential diagnosis by considerin

Minor salivary gland neoplasms constitute up to approximately 25% of all salivary gland tumors. The incidence of malignancy of these tumors is slightly greater than half. Basal cell adenocarcinoma (BCAC) is a rare salivary gland malignancy that occurs most commonly in the parotid gland. In this report, we describe a case of an older woman presenting with BCAC of the upper lip arising from the minor salivary gland.

Mucosal plasmacytoses constitute a group of idiopathic inflammatory disorders, characterized by a dense infiltrate of plasma cells at the mucocutaneous junction without any recognizable dermatosis or neoplasm. We report an unusual clinical presentation of mucosal plasmacytosis presenting with hemorrhagic crusting of the lips, mimicking erythema multiforme.

Fibrolipomas are benign mesenchymal neoplasms of the fatty tissue rarely encountered in the oral cavity. They account for around 1% to 5% of all neoplasms affecting the mouth and occur as raised, slow-growing, painless lesions of normal or yellow coloration and uncertain etiology. In contrast, mucus retention cysts are epithelium-lined cavities originated from a salivary gland. They are also raised, asymptomatic, slow-growing lesions, located on the floor of the mouth, buccal mucosa and lips. This article reports a diagnostic and a surgical treatment of a rare fibrolipoma case associated with

Angiofibromas are rare, benign, but locally aggressive vascular tumours which account for 0.05-0.5% of all head and neck neoplasms. The common variant of angiofibromas of head and neck region is Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma (JNAF) which is well published in the literature. Incidence of Extranasopharygeal Angiofibromas (ENAF) is relatively rare and most of the published literature favours maxillary sinus as the most common site. We report a rare clinical entity of ENAF involving the upper lip which is first of its kind in the light of literature review owing to its anatomical location.
