Speechreading Ability Is Related to Phonological Awareness and Single-Word Reading in Both Deaf and Hearing Children.

Purpose Speechreading (lipreading) is a correlate of reading ability in both deaf and hearing children. We investigated whether the relationship between speechreading and single-word reading is mediated by phonological awareness in deaf and hearing children. Method In two separate studies, 66 deaf children and 138 hearing children, aged 5-8 years old, were assessed on measures of speechreading, phonological awareness, and single-word reading. We assessed the concurrent relationships between latent variables measuring speechreading, phonological awareness, and single-word reading. Results In bo

Vibrotactile stimulation: case study with a profoundly deaf child.

This case study reports results obtained from a young, profoundly deaf child, M, who was fitted with a single-channel vibrotactile device, the Tactaid I, at 29 months of age. Her progress in speech and language development was evaluated over a 14-month period. During this period, M learned to understand 101 words through lipreading and the Tactaid I, and to produce consistent approximations of 90 words. Her scores on language tests with hearing-impaired norms progressed from below average to above average for her age. M's scores on language tests with hearing norms also reflected significant p

Results from a European clinical investigation of the Nucleus multichannel auditory brainstem implant.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to investigate the perceptual benefits and potential risks of implanting the Nucleus(R) multichannel auditory brainstem implant. DESIGN: Between September 1992 and October 1997 a total of 27 subjects received a Nucleus 20- or 21-channel Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI). All subjects involved in the trial had bilateral acoustic tumour as a result of neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) resulting in complete dysfunction of the VIIIth nerve. The study used each subject as their own control without a preoperative baseline because residual hearing, if existing, was des

Facemasks reduce face trustworthiness perceived by deaf individuals.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, most people wore facemasks to protect themselves and others. Whilst this was recommendable, unfortunately facemasks represented a critical problem for deaf people by preventing lipreading. Moreover, the mouth region represents a crucial source of information for inferring emotional states as well as for visually-based social first impressions. An interesting question is whether facemasks impact on social inferences, such as trustworthiness judgments, in a similar vein in deaf and hearing individuals. Our results showed that overall deaf individuals performed simil

Teaching Children With Hearing Loss to Recognize Speech: Gains Made With Computer-Based Auditory and/or Speechreading Training.

OBJECTIVES: Transfer appropriate processing (TAP) refers to a general finding that training gains are maximized when training and testing are conducted under the same conditions. The present study tested the extent to which TAP applies to speech perception training in children with hearing loss. Specifically, we assessed the benefits of computer-based speech perception training games for enhancing children's speech recognition by comparing three training groups: auditory training (AT), audiovisual training (AVT), and a combination of these two (AT/AVT). We also determined whether talker-specif

Null effects of facial asymmetry on intrafacial speechreading performance in men and women.

Intrafacial differences in speechreading performance were studied measuring 24 subjects' visual recognition of key words within sentences when presented either a left-left-(LL) or right-right-(RR)-sided face of a male speaker with moderate facial asyrnmetry. No significant differences were found as a function of facial side or gender (ns = 12).

Speech Perception Training in Children: The Retention of Benefits and Booster Training.

OBJECTIVES: Speech perception training can be a highly effective intervention to improve perception and language abilities in children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Most studies of speech perception training, however, only measure gains immediately following training. Only a minority of cases include a follow-up assessment after a period without training. A critical unanswered question was whether training-related benefits are retained for a period of time after training has stopped. A primary goal of this investigation was to determine whether children retained training-related benefits 4

What can we learn about hearing aids from cochlear implants?

Cochlear implants have changed the rehabilitation of profoundly hearing-impaired patients. A wide range of performance is reported for postlingually deaf adult patients using multichannel (Nucleus and Inerad) cochlear implants. For the 63 patients described here, performance ranges from 0 to 62% correct word recognition, from 0 to 98% lipreading enhancement measured as a percentage of the possible enhancement, and from 0 to 98% on understanding words in sentences. Prelingually deaf children also show benefit from their cochlear implants, but they require more time to obtain benefit than postli

Pushing the limits of remote RF sensing by reading lips under the face mask.

The problem of Lip-reading has become an important research challenge in recent years. The goal is to recognise speech from lip movements. Most of the Lip-reading technologies developed so far are camera-based, which require video recording of the target. However, these technologies have well-known limitations of occlusion and ambient lighting with serious privacy concerns. Furthermore, vision-based technologies are not useful for multi-modal hearing aids in the coronavirus (COVID-19) environment, where face masks have become a norm. This paper aims to solve the fundamental limitations of came

Changes in visually and auditory attended audiovisual speech processing in cochlear implant users: A longitudinal ERP study.

Limited auditory input, whether caused by hearing loss or by electrical stimulation through a cochlear implant (CI), can be compensated by the remaining senses. Specifically for CI users, previous studies reported not only improved visual skills, but also altered cortical processing of unisensory visual and auditory stimuli. However, in multisensory scenarios, it is still unclear how auditory deprivation (before implantation) and electrical hearing experience (after implantation) affect cortical audiovisual speech processing. Here, we present a prospective longitudinal electroencephalography (

A multistream attention based neural network for visual speech recognition and sign language understanding.

This paper introduces SignKeyNet, a novel multi-stream keypoint-based neural network designed to enhance lip-reading recognition and support foundational sign language understanding. The architecture decouples signer movements into three primary streams hands, face, and body using 133 pose keypoints extracted via pose estimation techniques. Each stream is processed independently using specialized attention modules, followed by an attention-based fusion mechanism that models cross-modal spatiotemporal dependencies. SignKeyNet is evaluated on the MIRACL-VC1 lip-reading dataset, achieving superio

An fNIRS dataset for Multimodal Speech Comprehension in Normal Hearing Individuals and Cochlear Implant Users.

Understanding cortical processing in cochlear implant (CI) users is crucial for improving speech outcomes. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) provides a non-invasive, implant-compatible method for assessing cortical activity during speech comprehension. However, existing studies suffer from methodological heterogeneity and a lack of standardized datasets, limiting cross-study comparisons and generalizability. To address this gap, we present a multimodal fNIRS dataset comprising 46 CI users and 26 normal hearing controls. Participants completed a clinically relevant speech comprehens

[Auditory and communication learning in patients with cochlear implants].

Nowadays the cochlear implant (CI) offers a new method of hearing, especially for deaf patients who do not benefit from conventional hearing aids. However, it may be difficult to get used to this kind of hearing advice. CI users have special problems in interpreting strange acoustic sensations and relating them to auditory features of language and noise they knew before the onset of deafness. An interdisciplinary approach is very important for rehabilitation. Beside otological examination and the surgical implantation, audiological assessment is needed for the correct adjustment of the speech

Mouth and facial informativeness norms for 2276 English words.

Mouth and facial movements are part and parcel of face-to-face communication. The primary way of assessing their role in speech perception has been by manipulating their presence (e.g., by blurring the area of a speaker's lips) or by looking at how informative different mouth patterns are for the corresponding phonemes (or visemes; e.g., /b/ is visually more salient than /g/). However, moving beyond informativeness of single phonemes is challenging due to coarticulation and language variations (to name just a few factors). Here, we present mouth and facial informativeness (MaFI) for words, i.e

Audio-visual speech in noise perception in dyslexia.

Individuals with developmental dyslexia (DD) may experience, besides reading problems, other speech-related processing deficits. Here, we examined the influence of visual articulatory information (lip-read speech) at various levels of background noise on auditory word recognition in children and adults with DD. We found that children with a documented history of DD have deficits in their ability to gain benefit from lip-read information that disambiguates noise-masked speech. We show with another group of adult individuals with DD that these deficits persist into adulthood. These deficits coul

Field trials of a tactile acoustic monitor for the profoundly deaf.

Profoundly deaf subjects were given information about sound level in their environment by means of a body-worn unit coupled to a small vibrator worn on the finger. Results of trials on 19 adults are discussed. The Tactile Acoustic Monitor was found to be useful for identifying domestic sounds by means of their distinctive timing patterns. No significant overall improvement in subject's control of voice level was observed, although some subjects found that having a voice level monitor gave them greater confidence to join conversations. Various design improvements were suggested by the trials. M
