OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of listening demands and motivation on listening effort (LE) in a novel speech recognition task.
DESIGN: We manipulated listening demands and motivation using vocoded speech and financial reward, respectively, and measured task performance (correct response rate) and indices of LE (response times (RTs), subjective ratings of LE and likelihood of giving up). Effects of inter-individual differences in cognitive skills and personality on task performance and LE were also assessed within the context of the Cognitive Energetics Theory (CET).

OBJECTIVES: Recent research has demonstrated that pupil dilation, a measure of mental effort (cognitive processing load), is sensitive to differences in speech intelligibility. The present study extends this outcome by examining the effects of masker type and age on the speech reception threshold (SRT) and mental effort.
DESIGN: In young and middle-aged adults, pupil dilation was measured while they performed an SRT task, in which spoken sentences were presented in stationary noise, fluctuating noise, or together with a single-talker masker. The masker levels were adjusted to achieve 50% or 8

Sound source localization is a fundamental ability for living organisms and essential for human daily functioning. Sound localization heavily relies on binaural auditory input. Unilateral auditory impairment not only disrupts sound localization but also alters cortical activation patterns. However, current understanding of these adaptive cortical changes remains limited, with a lack of multidimensional and systematic research. Here, we employed multimodal neuroimaging-functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and pupillometry-to investigate the physiological mechanisms of sound localizatio

Recent studies have shown that prior knowledge about where, when, and who is going to talk improves speech intelligibility. How related attentional processes affect cognitive processing load has not been investigated yet. In the current study, three experiments investigated how the pupil dilation response is affected by prior knowledge of target speech location, target speech onset, and who is going to talk. A total of 56 young adults with normal hearing participated. They had to reproduce a target sentence presented to one ear while ignoring a distracting sentence simultaneously presented to

The sounds we experience in our everyday communication can vary greatly depending on the environment. Paradoxically, increasing the sound level may lead to worse speech perception, especially in noise. This decline is known as "rollover." It is unclear how rollover is experienced differentially across aging groups, as well as for those with and without hearing loss. In addition, there is mounting evidence that listening effort plays an important role in challenging listening conditions and can be directly quantified with objective measures such as pupil dilation. To investigate the interacting

BACKGROUND: Listening effort is primarily reflective of real-world performance. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the listening effort to predict the performance of hearing aid (HA) users in their daily lives.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between listening effort, daily HA use time, and HA satisfaction.
RESEARCH DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study.
STUDY SAMPLE: Thirty-three bilateral behind-the-ear HA users (17 females and 16 males) between 19 and 37 years were participated. All participants had bilateral, symmetric, moderate sensorineural hearing loss a

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of chronic tinnitus on listening effort.
METHOD: Thirteen normal-hearing young adults with chronic tinnitus were matched with a control group for age, gender, hearing thresholds, and educational level. A dual-task paradigm was used to evaluate listening effort in different listening conditions. A primary speech-recognition task and a secondary memory task were performed both separately and simultaneously. Furthermore, subjective listening effort was questioned for various listening situations. The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory w

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative motor neuron disease that can cause progressive bulbar dysfunction and dysarthria, resulting in reduced quality of life. Quantitative motor speech analysis can identify features of dysarthria that worsen with ALS progression but are not, inherently, clinically meaningful. Listener effort (LE) is a clinician-rated feature describing how much effort the listener needs to exert to understand the dysarthric speaker. This study investigated whether LE could act as a clinically meaningful measure of ALS dysarthria that could be used as an ou

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the effects of listening effort (LE) on balance in patients with compensated vestibular deficits compared to healthy peers.
METHODS: The subjects included two main groups: a control group of 15 healthy subjects and a study group of 19 patients with compensated vestibular pathology. The computerized dynamic posturography test (CDP) was conducted without the speech-in-noise task as a baseline, then the participant was subjected to a dual task in which the auditory task (speech-in-noise sentences) was given as the primary task, and the balance function test wa

OBJECTIVES: Listening effort and listening-related fatigue are clinically important yet rarely assessed in routine audiology. This study culturally adapted the Effort Assessment Scale (EAS) into Chinese and psychometrically evaluated the Chinese EAS (C-EAS) and the 10-item Vanderbilt Fatigue Scale for Adults-10 (C-VFS-A-10) in Chinese-speaking adults. Associations with better-ear pure-tone average (PTA), tinnitus, and key demographic factors were also examined.
DESIGN: A two-phase study was conducted. Phase 1 followed established guidelines to translate and culturally adapt the EAS. Phase 2 w

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have investigated listening effort in tinnitus patients compared to healthy individuals. These studies reported similar pure tone hearing thresholds between groups but did not investigate possible peripheral auditory dysfunction, which could affect the central auditory system and increase listening effort even when hearing thresholds are within the normal hearing range. This study aimed to investigate the presence of listening effort in tinnitus patients by controlling for peripheral auditory function (PAF).
METHODS: This study included 16 chronic tinnitus patie

Listening to speech in noise is effortful for individuals with hearing loss, even if they have received a hearing prosthesis such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant (CI). At present, little is known about the neural functions that support listening effort. One form of neural activity that has been suggested to reflect listening effort is the power of 8-12 Hz (alpha) oscillations measured by electroencephalography (EEG). Alpha power in two cortical regions has been associated with effortful listening-left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), and parietal cortex-but these relationships have not been

This study examines how the signal-to-noise-interference ratio (SNIR) influences auditory performance and neural responses associated with listening effort (LE). A new dataset was collected from individuals with moderate hearing loss, all fitted with hearing aids (HAs). Participants listened to two competing audiobooks presented via front-facing loudspeakers, while 16-talker babble noise was delivered from background speakers. Six SNIR levels (5.47, - $$ - $$ 3.55, - $$ - $$ 2.13, - $$ - $$ 1.19, - $$ - $$ 0.64, and - $$ - $$ 0.27 dB) were tested. Participants were instructed to atte

Cochlear synaptopathy, a type of cochlear deafferentation that impacts the synapses between the inner hair cells and the afferent auditory nerve fibers, is predicted to result in speech perception in noise difficulty. However, this has been difficult to confirm due to mixed findings in human studies of the relationship between speech perception in noise and physiological indicators of deafferentation (auditory brainstem response [ABR] wave I amplitude, envelope following response [EFR] magnitude, and middle ear muscle reflex [MEMR] magnitude). One possible explanation for the mixed findings is
