Donor nephrectomy was performed on 39 living related renal donors. The preoperative evaluation, surgical technique, and postoperative follow-up are presented. Major or minor complications developed in 23 per cent of the patients and included acute myocardial infarction, brachial plexus injury, acute glomerulonephritis, ileus, pneumonia, and urinary tract infection. All complications had resolved by six months postoperatively.

INTRODUCTION: An increasing number of living-unrelated, kidney donor transplants are being performed in our unit. We present a comparison of living-unrelated (LURD) and living-related donor (LRD) renal transplant outcomes and analyse influencing factors.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the outcome of all living-donor renal transplants performed at our centre from 1993 to 2004. The parameters studied included patient and graft survival, functioning status of grafts (determined by estimated GFR) at last follow-up and any rejection episodes. Multivariate analysis was performed

Living kidney donation is on the rise, either due to cultural or ethical reasons or due to a lack of deceased donor kidneys. For adequately counseling of a potential living kidney donor, medical professionals must know not only the immediate risks of kidney donation but also possible long-term effects of kidney donation on the donor's physical and psychological well-being. This also includes a range of aspects such as quality of life, insurance issues, and family planning following kidney donation. This review article is based on a Medline and PubMed search and elucidates the risks living kidn

BACKGROUND: As in most industrialized countries, living kidney donation has increased considerably in the UK and now amounts to 38% of the total UK kidney transplant activity. Living kidney donation guidelines have been formulated by the relevant national societies. We were interested to study whether or not renal units across the UK adhere to those guidelines and to delineate areas of inconsistency and controversy.
METHODS: Twenty-four adult kidney transplant centres and 50 adult non-transplant renal units across the UK were contacted by a postal questionnaire from January to April 2011.

BACKGROUND: Living kidney donors incur donation-related expenses, but how these expenses impact postdonation mental health is unknown.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, the association between mental health and donor-incurred expenses (both out-of-pocket costs and lost wages) was examined in 821 people who donated a kidney at one of the 12 transplant centers in Canada between 2009 and 2014. Mental health was measured by the RAND Short Form-36 Health Survey along with Beck Anxiety Inventory and Beck Depression Inventory.
RESULTS: A total of 209 donors (25%) reported expenses of >5500

New regulations require living kidney donor (LKD) follow-up for 2 years, but donor retention remains poor. Electronic communication (eg, text messaging and e-mail) might improve donor retention. To explore the possible impact of electronic communication, we recruited LKDs to participate in an exploratory study of communication via telephone, e-mail, or text messaging postdonation; communication through this study was purely optional and did not replace standard follow-up. Of 69 LKDs recruited, 3% requested telephone call, 52% e-mail, and 45% text messaging. Telephone response rate was 0%; thes

PURPOSE: This study was done to explore adaptation experience of living kidney donors after donation. Specific aims were to identify challenges donors face in the process of adaptation following surgery and how they interact with recipients and other people.
METHODS: Grounded theory methodology was utilized. Participants were 13 living kidney donors at six months or more after donation. Data were collected by in-depth interviews with individual participants. Data were analyzed using constants comparative method with theoretical saturation.
RESULTS: A core category emerged as 'keeping the fen

In many cases, optimal treatment for end stage renal disease (ESRD) is living kidney donation. African Americans are of interest because of high incidence of ESRD, documented disparities regarding kidney transplantation, and under-representation in living kidney donor research. An interpretive qualitative study was conducted among African Americans to improve understanding of living donation to genetically or emotionally related recipients. Two major themes emerged - context of living kidney donation and work of living kidney donors. Specially noted are the influence of spiritual and religious

Kidney transplantation from living donors is widely performed all over the world. Living nephrectomy for transplantation has no direct advantage for the donor other than increased self-esteem, but at least remains an extremely safe procedure, with a worldwide overall mortality rate of 0.03%. This theoretical risk to the donor seems to be justified by the socioeconomic advantages and increased quality of life of the recipient, especially in selected cases, such as pediatric patients, when living donor kidney transplantation can be performed in a preuremic phase, avoiding the psychological and p

An increase in waiting time for a cadaveric organs and a better graft-function, graft- and patient-survival with kidneys from a living donors have lead to an increase in living-donor renal transplantation in the therapy of end-stage renal disease. In Germany, with the implementation of a transplantation law in 1997 and due to improved surgical techniques (laparoscopy) the proportion of living renal donors has almost tripled during the last five years. The transplantation law also names the potential donors, including not only genetically related but also emotionally related donors. Inclusion c

A kidney transplant is the treatment of choice for suitable patients with end-stage renal disease. The living related kidney donor represents an important source of kidneys because graft survival is much better and there is a critical shortage of organ donors. This article reviews the risks to the donor and the means by which these individuals are assessed in order to minimize the risk.

BACKGROUND: For patients with a solitary kidney, such as living kidney donors, the surgical treatment of renal tumors may result in loss of function of the remaining kidney.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, matched cohort study to determine the long-term risk of partial or total nephrectomy in previous living kidney donors compared to healthy nondonors. We reviewed the predonation charts for all living kidney donors in Ontario, Canada between 1992 and 2010 and linked this information to provincial healthcare databases.
RESULTS: We matched 2119 donors to 21190 nondonors from the general

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Kidney transplantation from a living kidney donor (LKD) is associated with better long-term survival and quality of life for a patient with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) than dialysis. We reviewed recent literature on the acceptability and outcomes of older adults as LKDs, which may be misunderstood in routine care.
RECENT FINDINGS: Studies report that receiving a kidney from an older LKD is associated with worse recipient and graft survival compared with receiving a kidney from a younger LKD, but similar recipient and graft survival to receiving a kidney from a standard c

OBJECTIVES: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction is a serious complication that may be associated with increased mortality. Living-donor liver transplant includes major surgery for the donor. The purpose of this study was to evaluate preoperative and postoperative cognitive function of liver donors in living-donor liver transplant.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 102 patients who had hepatectomy for liver transplant donation, preoperative and postoperative (1 week) neuropsychologic tests were performed including the Trail Making Test, the Stroop effect, score on the Beck Depression Inventory, and th

The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network gives priority in kidney allocation to prior live organ donors who require a kidney transplant. In this study, we analyzed the effect of this policy on facilitating access to transplantation for prior donors who were wait-listed for kidney transplantation in the United States. Using 1:1 propensity score-matching methods, we assembled two matched cohorts. The first cohort consisted of prior organ donors and matched nondonors who were wait-listed during the years 1996-2010. The second cohort consisted of prior organ donors and matched nondonors w

BACKGROUND: Young women wishing to become living kidney donors frequently ask whether nephrectomy will affect their future pregnancies.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of living kidney donors involving 85 women (131 pregnancies after cohort entry) who were matched in a 1:6 ratio with 510 healthy nondonors from the general population (788 pregnancies after cohort entry). Kidney donations occurred between 1992 and 2009 in Ontario, Canada, with follow-up through linked health care databases until March 2013. Donors and nondonors were matched with respect to age, year of cohort

BACKGROUND: The disparity between donor kidney availability and demand has increased utilization of kidneys from older living donors (OLD). We compared graft and patient outcomes of patients on maintenance dialysis after transplantation with OLD kidneys to those receiving younger live donor (YLD) kidneys and deceased donor (DD) kidneys.
METHODS: Using Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry, primary live and deceased donor renal transplant recipients aged 18 years or older between 1997 and 2009 were stratified into six groups: standard criteria deceased donor kidneys with t

OBJECTIVES: At our center living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) represents 4% of all transplantations. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to clarify the current well-being of the donors, their experiences of being a donor, as well as the regenerative capacity of the liver.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Thirty-six healthy subjects donated a part of their liver between 1996 and 2007. Thirty-four patients participated in the study and completed our questionnaire. We performed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the liver, physical examination, and blood chemistry.
RESULTS: Twenty-three subjec
