Herpesvirus-associated papillomatosis in a green lizard.

Papillomatous skin lesions from a green lizard (Lacerta viridis) were examined histologically, using electron microscopy and DNA was isolated from the lesions for herpes-viral DNA detection. Histology confirmed the lesions to be squamous epithelial papillomas. Using electron microscopy, no virus particles were detected. The specific sequence of herpesviral DNA-directed DNA polymerase (EC 2.7.7.7) was amplified using degenerate primers in a nested format. The 235-base-pair (bp) sequence was sequenced and compared with previously published DNA-directed DNA polymerase sequences from various repti

The effect of oxygen and adenosine on lizard thermoregulation.

A regulated decrease in internal body temperature (Tb) appears to play a protective role against metabolic disruptions such as exposure to ambient hypoxia. This study examined the possibility that Tb depression is initiated when low internal oxygen levels trigger the release of adenosine, a neural modulator known to influence thermoregulation. We measured selected Tb of Anolis sagrei in a thermal gradient under varied ambient oxygen conditions and following the administration of the adenosine receptor antagonist 8-cyclopentyltheophylline (CPT). The average decrease in Tb observed following exp

Cochlear ganglion cells in the alligator lizard.

Two types of ganglion cells are present in the cochlear ganglion of the alligator lizard. Myelinated cells are the predominant type but a small population of unmyelinated cells is also present. Ganglion cells are reconstructed and morphometrically analyzed from serial light and electron micrographs. The results are interpreted to indicate that the unmyelinated ganglion cells are degenerating neurons. No normal population of unmyelinated nerve fibers was found. The anatomy of the cochlear nerve of the lizard is described and compared with the mammalian auditory nerve.

Biochemical characterization of the lizard toxin gilatoxin.

The Gila monster (genus Heloderma) is the only known lizard to produce and inject a venomous secretion. Little is known about the venom from these lizards, and none of the toxins have been isolated until this time. This paper reports the isolation and characterization of a major lethal toxin (gilatoxin) from the venoms of Heloderma suspectum and Heloderma horridum. Gilatoxins from both species were similar in amino acid composition, electrophoretic mobility, pI, and immunological reactivity. They are acidic proteins possessing molecular weights of 35 000-37 500 and isoelectric points of 4.25 a

Sex-specific growth arrest in a lizard.

(1) In contrast to mammals and birds, reptiles have been considered as indeterminate growers, whose growth reflects differential allocation of resources to growth versus other energetically demanding processes such as reproduction. (2) We monitored the growth and activity of bone growth plates, hormonal profiles, and reproductive activity in males and females of the male-larger gecko Paroedura picta. We show that growth plates fuse in this species in a sex-specific manner. The more abrupt epiphyseal closure and more pronounced growth deceleration in females coincide with the increased activity

The sandfish lizard's aerodynamic filtering system.

Particulate air pollution has an adverse effect on cardiovascular and respiratory health. Air filtration systems are therefore essential in closed indoor environments. While mechanical filtration is described as an efficient technology, particle filters may act as a source of pollution if not correctly installed and frequently maintained. The sandfish lizard, a sand swimmer that spends nearly its whole life in fine desert sand, inspired us to rethink traditional filtering systems due to its unique ability of filtering sand from its nasal cavity. During a slow, prolonged inhalation, strong cros

Anatomical model of the cochlea of the alligator lizard.

The three-dimensional structure of the cochlea of the alligator lizard was examined and an anatomical model was constructed. Separate pieces of the model represent the cochlear duct and posterior branch of the eighth cranial nerve. These pieces fit together inside a transparent plastic piece that represents the bony capsule. In this paper, the method used to construct the anatomical model is described, and three-dimensional features of cochlear anatomy are illustrated.

Bite of the venomous lizard, the Gila monster.

The bite of the Gila monster may cause significant symptoms, including constitutional symptoms, pain, edema, mild hypotension, and less frequently, shock (as in the case reported here). Envenomations may be life-threatening but generally are easily managed by symptomatic and supportive measures and appear to be less toxic than envenomations by other poisonous reptiles. Prudent handling of captive animals could probably prevent the majority of these already uncommon bites.

Comparative gliding performance of Anolis lizards among three Caribbean ecomorphs.

Anole lizards (genus Anolis) have repeatedly and independently occupied arboreal niches, and in parallel have evolved associated morphologies and locomotor behaviors. In arboreal vertebrates more generally, parachuting and gliding have frequently evolved in response to selective pressure for targeting and controlled landings during either falls or intentional jumps. Here we describe morphological features and aerial performance among five anole species representing the trunk-ground, trunk-crown, and crown giant ecomorphs. Aerial behavior within a vertical wind tunnel was used to evaluate glidi

Transient Cooling Resets Circadian Rhythms of Locomotor Activity in Lizards.

Animals frequently experience temperature fluctuations in their natural life cycle, including periods of low temperatures below their activity range. For example, poikilothermic animals are known to enter a hibernation-like state called brumation during transient cooling. However, the knowledge regarding the physiological responses of brumation is limited. Specifically, the impact of exposure to low-temperature conditions outside the range of temperature compensation on the subsequent circadian behavioral rhythms remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of transient cooling

Lizards and the enzootic cycle of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato.

Emerging and re-emerging pathogens often stem from zoonotic origins, cycling between humans and animals, and are frequently vectored and maintained by hematophagous arthropod vectors. The efficiency by which these disease agents are successfully transmitted between vertebrate hosts is influenced by many factors, including the host on which a vector feeds. The Lyme disease bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato has adapted to survive in complex host environments, vectored by Ixodes ticks, and maintained in multiple vertebrate hosts. The versatility of Lyme borreliae in disparate host milieus

Hurricane effects on Neotropical lizards span geographic and phylogenetic scales.

Extreme climate events such as droughts, cold snaps, and hurricanes can be powerful agents of natural selection, producing acute selective pressures very different from the everyday pressures acting on organisms. However, it remains unknown whether these infrequent but severe disruptions are quickly erased by quotidian selective forces, or whether they have the potential to durably shape biodiversity patterns across regions and clades. Here, we show that hurricanes have enduring evolutionary impacts on the morphology of anoles, a diverse Neotropical lizard clade. We first demonstrate a transge

The iliosacral joint in lizards: an osteological and histological analysis.

The development of the iliosacral joint (ISJ) in tetrapods represented a crucial step in the evolution of terrestrial locomotion. This structure is responsible for transferring forces between the vertebral column and appendicular skeleton, thus supporting the bodyweight on land. However, most research dealing with the water-to-land transition and biomechanical studies in general has focused exclusively on the articulation between the pelvic girdle and femur. Our knowledge about the contact between the pelvic girdle and vertebral column (i.e. the ISJ) at a tissue level is restricted so far to h

Sex work in trucking milieux: "lot lizards," truckers, and risk.

BACKGROUND: Long-haul truckers often engage in risk-laden sexual mixing and drug exchanges with female sex workers while on the road, which increase their vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections/blood borne infections (STI/BBI). OBJECTIVE: An ethnoepidemiological study of STI/BBI in trucker-centered populations was conducted at four truckstops in the United States. This article reports findings from an analysis of the female sex worker data, which show how mobility and transience, as well as poverty, homelessness, and exposure to violence, have the potential to exacerbate the occupat

Early evolution of the venom system in lizards and snakes.

Among extant reptiles only two lineages are known to have evolved venom delivery systems, the advanced snakes and helodermatid lizards (Gila Monster and Beaded Lizard). Evolution of the venom system is thought to underlie the impressive radiation of the advanced snakes (2,500 of 3,000 snake species). In contrast, the lizard venom system is thought to be restricted to just two species and to have evolved independently from the snake venom system. Here we report the presence of venom toxins in two additional lizard lineages (Monitor Lizards and Iguania) and show that all lineages possessing toxi

Daily melatonin infusions entrain the locomotor activity of pinealectomized lizards.

Previously, it was shown that the locomotor activity rhythms of pineal-intact lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis) could be entrained to a periodicity of 24 h by 10-micrograms melatonin injections administered every other day at the same time. The present study examined the response of the circadian activity rhythm of pinealectomized S. occidentalis to daily 12-h infusions of smaller quantities of melatonin (0.1 or 5 micrograms melatonin/day). The results show that entrainment is achieved by infusion of 0.1 microgram of melatonin/day in pinealectomized lizards, as well as by 5 micrograms of melat

Is the pineal involved in the stimulatory influence of prolactin on tail regeneration in lizards? Studies with exogenous prolactin in lizards exposed to continuous darkness.

We have recently demonstrated that continuous light stimulates tail regeneration in the gekkonid lizard, Hemidactylus flaviviridis, whereas continuous darkness and pinealectomy depress regeneration. As a sequel to this observation, the effect of exogenous ovine prolactin (oPRL) on tail regeneration in normal (NL) and pinealectomized (PX) Hemidactylus exposed to continuous darkness (L:D 0:24) during the monsoon season was investigated. Once-daily intraperitoneal (ip) injections of 500 micrograms/kg oPRL were administered to a group of NL lizards, a group of PX lizards, and a group of sham-PX (s

Soil water harvest inspired by desert horned lizards, Phrynosoma platyrhinos.

Desert environments pose severe water scarcity challenges, leading to unique adaptations among native fauna. Notably, many species of desert horned lizards utilize a dermal drinking method, employing integumental microchannels to draw water from raindrops and moist soils via capillary action. However, the exact mechanism by which they eventually move the water collected between their jaws into their mouths remains elusive. Our research investigates this critical step in the drinking of desert horned lizards, Phrynosoma platyrhinos, revealing that the lizards use characteristic rhythmic jaw mov
