INTRODUCTION: Locomotion disorders are important in Huntington's disease (HD). Although the rates of evolution of motor, functional or cognitive aspects of HD have been studied, the evolution of locomotion disorders in early stages of the disease remains unknown.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the rate of evolution of the HD-associated gait and gait initiation disorders and their correlates.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighteen HD patients were recorded with a minimum interevaluation interval of one year. Akinesia was studied by evaluating the anticipatory postural adjustment (APA) phase preceding the f

The tension development of the triceps surae muscle was analyzed during the stance phase of locomotion at different speeds with respect to its electrical activation and its lengthening and shortening behavior. The main point was the coincidence of maximal dorsiflexion, maximal Achilles tendon tension, transition from amortization to acceleration phase, and projection of the center of gravity to the supporting leg. It is concluded that the stiffness regulation needed for load compensation after impact and pushing off at the end of stance phase depends on modulation and enhancement of a centrall

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reliability and validity of a new questionnaire, the 25-question Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale (GLFS-25), for early detection of locomotive syndrome.
METHODS: This new screening tool was designed to detect Japanese individuals under high-risk conditions who may soon require care services because of problems of the locomotive organs. Content validity, construct validity, criterion validity, internal-consistency reliability, and reproducibility (test-retest reliability) were examined using psychometric analysis, and a cutoff score to detect locomotive syndrome w

In VR video games, users can explore virtual worlds by physically walking in the real world or by using alternative locomotion techniques such as teleportation or steering. However, these techniques often pose challenges, including disorientation or sickness. This study presents TransPortal, a novel portal-based locomotion technique for VR video games. The proposed technique allows users to manipulate a marker object to specify a destination and to move there through a portal that can be freely activated or deactivated. To evaluate the proposed method, we conducted a within-subjects experiment

We show that epidural spinal cord stimulation can elicit stable bidirectional locomotion of decerebrate cats on a split-belt treadmill. The stepping pattern of one limb was similar to unidirectional forward walking and, the other-was similar to unidirectional backward walking. This confirms that spinal and brainstem circuitry are sufficient to control such complex and extraordinary motor tasks driven by somatosensory input. Interlimb coordination during forward and backward walking was preserved in 2 out of 4 animals during 'extreme' conditions when one of the treadmill belts was stopped. Bidi

Locomotion occurs sporadically and needs to be started, maintained, and stopped. The neural substrate underlying the activation of locomotion is partly known, but little is known about mechanisms involved in termination of locomotion. Recently, reticulospinal neurons (stop cells) were found to play a crucial role in stopping locomotion in the lamprey: their activation halts ongoing locomotion and their inactivation slows down the termination process. Intracellular recordings of these cells revealed a distinct activity pattern, with a burst of action potentials at the beginning of a locomotor b

Impaired locomotion is a frequent and major source of disability in patients with neurological conditions. Different neuroimaging methods have been used to understand the brain substrates of locomotion in various neurological diseases (mainly in Parkinson's disease) during actual walking, and while resting (using mental imagery of gait, or brain-behavior correlation analyses). These studies, using structural (i.e., MRI) or functional (i.e., functional MRI or functional near infra-red spectroscopy) brain imaging, electrophysiology (i.e., EEG), non-invasive brain stimulation (i.e., transcranial

Upon falling onto the water surface, most terrestrial arthropods helplessly struggle and are quickly eaten by aquatic predators. Exceptions to this outcome mostly occur among riparian taxa that escape by walking or swimming at the water surface. Here we document sustained, directional, neustonic locomotion (i.e. surface swimming) in tropical arboreal ants. We dropped 35 species of ants into natural and artificial aquatic settings in Peru and Panama to assess their swimming ability. Ten species showed directed surface swimming at speeds >3 body lengths s(-1), with some swimming at absolute spee

This study aims to investigate functional disparity in the locomotor apparatus of bipedal archosaurs. We use reconstructions of hindlimb myology of extant and extinct archosaurs to generate musculoskeletal biomechanical models to test hypothesized convergence between bipedal crocodile-line archosaurs and dinosaurs. Quantitative comparison of muscle leverage supports the inference that bipedal crocodile-line archosaurs and non-avian theropods had highly convergent hindlimb myology, suggesting similar muscular mechanics and neuromuscular control of locomotion. While these groups independently ev

A new partial skeleton of Proconsul nyanzae from Mfangano Island, Kenya (KNM-MW 13142) includes five lumbar vertebrae, a partial sacrum, and nearly complete hipbone. Until recently, little was known of the axial and pelvic skeletons of Proconsul, or any early Miocene hominoid. Because torso morphology directly reflects locomotor behavior, these elements provide important new information about posture and locomotion of P. nyanzae. Two basic patterns of locomotor behavior and corresponding torso morphology exist among extant anthropoids. Monkeys have long, flexible spines with powerful epaxial m

Active locomotion by individual marine and freshwater sponges across glass, plastic and rubber substrata has been studied in relation to the behavior of the sponges' component cells. Sequential tracing of sponge outlines on aquarium walls shows that sponges can crawl up to 160 microns/hr (4 mm/day). Time-lapse cinemicrography and scanning electron microscopy reveal that moving sponges possess distinctive leading edges composed of motile cells. Sponge locomotion was found to be mechanically similar to the spreading of cell sheets in tissue culture both with respect to exertion of traction (whic

23 patients with multiple myeloma of IgG, IgA and light chain type, one patient with benign monoclonal IgE gammopathy and 23 healthy controls were investigated for their leukocyte locomotion (LL), for the ability of their sera to generate chemotactic factors upon activation with zymosan, and for inhibitory effects of their sera upon LL. While no significant impairment of the patients' LL was observed when casein was used as cytotaxin, LL was markedly reduced in myeloma patients with zymosan activated control serum as chemoattractant. The ability of serum to generate chemotactic factors upon ac

The telemetered electromyographic (EMG) activity of quadriceps, hamstrings, triceps surae and pretibial muscles on the affected side of 20 adult hemiplegic subjects was examined during locomotion. The subjects ranged in age from 29 to 68 years (mean, 52.1). Duration of the lesions ranged from 1 month to 8 years: in 11 subjects the duration of the lesions ranged from 1 to 9 months (mean, 4.9 months), and in the remaining 9 subjects from 1 to 8 years (mean, 4 years 2 months). Shoes with five microswitches, two in the heel and three in the sole, were used to correlate the EMG activity with eight

Reconstructing the locomotion of extinct vertebrates offers insights into their palaeobiology and helps to conceptualize major transitions in vertebrate evolution1-4. However, estimating the locomotor behaviour of a fossil species remains a challenge because of the limited information preserved and the lack of a direct correspondence between form and function5,6. The evolution of advanced locomotion on land-that is, locomotion that is more erect, balanced and mechanically power-saving than is assumed of anamniote early tetrapods-has previously been linked to the terrestrialization and diversif

BACKGROUND: The authors have developed a screening tool, the 25-Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale (GLFS-25), for the early detection of locomotive syndrome (LS). However, few studies have examined the prevalence of LS in the general population. This study estimated the prevalence of LS in Japan using the GLSF-25 and investigated age specific mean values for this scale.
METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted to reveal standard values for the GLFS-25 and to estimate the total number of individuals with LS in Japan. Subjects were individuals selected from resi

The vestibular system plays an important role in locomotion. Individuals with vestibular pathology present with gait abnormalities, which may increase their fall frequency. Backward walking (BW) has been suggested as a predictor of falls in other patient populations; however it has not been studied in individuals with dizziness. Our aims were: (1) to investigate the differences in forward walking (FW) and BW both between and within 3 groups: Healthy controls, individuals with dizziness and vestibular pathology, and individuals with dizziness without vestibular pathology, (2) describe differenc

Psychostimulants including amphetamine and cocaine induce locomotion and stereotypy and suppress eating. Studies of the biobehavioral actions of psychostimulants commonly focus on locomotion and less commonly on feeding, and only rarely are these measures considered in conjunction within the same animal. Inasmuch as hyperactivity induced by a psychostimulant may compete with other motor behaviors, including eating, it would be important to concurrently assess changes in eating and locomotion after psychostimulant treatment. The present paper describes a modification of an automated activity ch
