The trajectory of loneliness in response to COVID-19.

Social distancing and "stay-at-home" orders are essential to contain the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19), but there is concern that these measures will increase feelings of loneliness, particularly in vulnerable groups. The present study examined change in loneliness in response to the social restriction measures taken to control the coronavirus spread. A nationwide sample of American adults (N = 1,545; 45% women; ages 18 to 98, M = 53.68, SD = 15.63) was assessed on three occasions: in late January/early February 2020 (before the outbreak), in late March (during the President's initial "15 Da

Assessing the loneliness of workers with mental retardation.

This study was designed to determine whether a reliable instrument could be developed to measure the loneliness experienced by workers with mental retardation. In addition, supervisors were asked to rate subjects on loneliness and four other behavioral subtypes in order to determine whether there was a relation between these ratings and the loneliness questionnaire. Three groups of subjects were assessed: persons with mild, moderate, and severe mental retardation. Results indicated that the Worker Loneliness Questionnaire was a reliable instrument for use with persons with mild and moderate me

The harms of medicalisation: intersex, loneliness and abandonment.

This article develops loneliness as a political and social justice issue by illustrating the harmful personal and social consequences of the medical jurisdiction over and constitution of variations in sex characteristics. Whilst connections between loneliness, health and illness have been well established, this work customarily identifies the ways illness can lead to, or be caused by, loneliness. Instead, I provide an account of the central role of medicalisation and medical management in producing loneliness. By doing so, I underline the imperative for medical practice to consider its influen

[Widowhood, loneliness, and health in old age].

INTRODUCTION: Elderly people are one of the most vulnerable groups in the population as regards loneliness, especially among those living alone. This paper aims to assess the impact of the feeling of loneliness on the elderly, taking into account that the loss of a spouse is the main reason that triggers this feeling. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Findings are presented from a qualitative study conducted in Spain. Data were gathered using a focus group approach (8 focus groups, differentiated by gender and place of residence). The data were analysed from a Grounded Theory perspective. RESULTS: Elder

Constraint and loneliness in agoraphobia: an empirical investigation.

While progress in the aetiopathology and treatment of panic disorder is indisputable, research regarding agoraphobia lacks behind. One significant-yet untested- theory by Guidano and Liotti, suggests the existence of inner representations of fear of "constraint" and fear of "loneliness" as two major schemata, important in the pathogenesis and manifestation of agoraphobia. Activation of these schemata may occur in situations in which the patient: (a) feels as in an inescapable trap (constraint) or (b) alone, unprotected and helpless (loneliness). Upon activation, the "constraint" schema elicits

The effect of loneliness on malnutrition in elderly population.

INTRODUCTION: The clinical and epidemiological data show that proper nutrition plays an important role in maintaining health and combating the danger of developing some chronic diseases in the elderly population. Nutrition is an important factor in many physiological and pathological changes that accompany the aging process. More than 50% of elderly patients are suffering from malnutrition which is information that concerns. Due to various factors, older people are potentially vulnerable groups at risk of malnutrition. Loneliness, isolation from society and neglect of parents by children is a

Loneliness, depression and sociability in old age.

BACKGROUND: The elderly population is large in general and growing due to advancement of health care education. These people are faced with numerous physical, psychological and social role changes that challenge their sense of self and capacity to live happily. Many people experience loneliness and depression in old age, either as a result of living alone or due to lack of close family ties and reduced connections with their culture of origin, which results in an inability to actively participate in the community activities. With advancing age, it is inevitable that people lose connection with

Relational inequalities and loneliness: How diverse family forms shape loneliness among heterosexual and LGBTQ+ adults in later life.

OBJECTIVES: Loneliness is a major concern in later life, yet disparities between heterosexual and LGBTQ+ older adults remain insufficiently understood. This study examined how families of origin and families of choice relate to loneliness among adults aged 50 +, and whether these associations differ by sexual orientation. DESIGN: Data were collected via online surveys in Israel and compared two groups: LGBTQ+ and heterosexual adults aged 50 +. PARTICIPANTS: The analytic sample included 948 participants. MEASUREMENTS: Loneliness was assessed using the brief UCLA Loneliness Scale. Participant

How perceiving pace of social change affects loneliness: psychological obsolescence as predictor for loneliness in late-life sample.

A specific challenge of later life relates to the perceived pace of social change (i.e., psychological obsolescence), which may contribute to enhanced feelings of loneliness. In a 2-year longitudinal study with two measurement occasions (i.e., 2021 and 2023), data were collected from N = 818 adults aged 75 years and older (M = 80.99, SD = 4.07, range = 75-95 years). Participants were recruited from an urban area in southern Germany. A baseline-adjusted autoregressive path model was used to examine the concurrent association of psychological obsolescence with baseline loneliness and its prospec

Disentangling Loneliness, Depression, and Social Media Use: A Gaussian, Mixed, and Bayesian Network Approach in the EU Loneliness Study.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness, depression, and social media use (SMU) are increasingly interconnected phenomena in modern mental health research. While prior studies have demonstrated associations between these domains, their mutual dynamics and directional relationships remain unclear. Traditional analytical approaches often treat these constructs as unitary, failing to capture the complexity of symptom-level interactions. AIMS: This study aimed to disentangle the relationships between loneliness, depression, and SMU by applying advanced network modeling approaches to a large and representative Eur

Prototype for Information-Oriented Global Loneliness Map.

Loneliness is a prevalent global public health concern with complex dynamics requiring further exploration. This study aims to enhance understanding of loneliness dynamics through building a prototype of a global loneliness map. The prototype is available online for public access. The prototype serves the purpose of making available different web and social media information under one point which can be accessed easily and intuitively. Through our literature review and research, we have divided the available information on loneliness into different categories. These categories explore differen

Is my loneliness killing me? Effects of loneliness and social isolation on transitions between cognitive status categories and death.

Loneliness and social isolation are associated with numerous adverse physical and psychological health outcomes in older adulthood, including cognitive impairment and mortality risk. Yet, how the individual and joint effects of loneliness and social isolation contribute to these outcomes remains unclear, particularly given the interplay between individual differences (loneliness) and environmental factors (social isolation) in shaping these important health outcomes in older adulthood (i.e., person-environment interactions). We used Cox regression, logistic regression, and multistate survival

Social isolation, loneliness, and biological aging acceleration.

OBJECTIVE: Social isolation and loneliness have been associated with several age-related health conditions. However, their effects on biological age acceleration (BAA) remain understudied. METHODS: The study analyzed data from 309,746 UK Biobank participants (Mage = 56.38 years, SD = 8.08, 54% female) over a median follow-up of 14.4 years. Self-reported questionnaires were used to gauge social isolation and loneliness. Multiple linear regression models and two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis were applied to estimate the associations between social isolation, loneliness, and BAA. Polyg

[Associations between Social Isolation, Loneliness, and Addiction].

Isolation and loneliness have been reported to be associated with premature death and are therefore considered to be serious public health issues. In animal studies, social isolation beginning in adolescent rodents has consistently been shown to increase alcohol consumption over time; however, this trend was observed only in males. In adult rodents, isolation has little effect on alcohol consumption. In human studies, population surveys have reported that isolation and loneliness are associated with less frequent drinking, whereas another study reported that greater loneliness is associated wi

Why friendship and loneliness affect our health.

Humans, like all monkeys and apes, have an intense desire to be social. The human social world, however, is extraordinarily complex, depends on sophisticated cognitive and neural processing, and is easily destabilized, with dramatic consequences for our mental and physical health. To show why, I first summarize descriptive aspects of human friendships and what they do for us, then discuss the cognitive and neurobiological processes that underpin them. I then summarize the growing body of evidence suggesting that our mental as well as our physical health and wellbeing are best predicted by the

Experiences of Loneliness: COVID-19 Versus Incarceration.

As the world comes to terms with the realities surrounding COVID-19, media sources have likened quarantine experiences to that of incarceration. Individuals who have experienced incarceration and individuals who have experienced the incarceration of loved ones (LO), have already experienced periods of time apart. We are exploring the experiences of individuals who have some experience with incarceration; whether they were personally incarcerated, or they experienced the incarceration of a LO. Utilizing snowball sampling, a mixed methods survey was circulated on social media. Survey items inclu

Social determinants of loneliness among older Americans.

To further understand loneliness among older persons, a conceptual model, predicated on a social-support perspective, was examined. Results were based on 1,071 participants in the congregate and home-delivered meal programs of the Senior Citizens Nutrition and Activities Program in Hillsborough County, Florida. A series of stepwise multiple regression analyses showed that loneliness was greater among men, those with no children, those with no friends, those more physically disabled, those who subjectively felt that their health was poorer, and those who subjectively felt that their economic co

Loneliness and pet ownership among single women.

Relationships among loneliness, pet ownership, and attachment were studied in a sample of 148 adult female students, 59 pet owners and 89 nonowners. No significant differences were found on the loneliness reported by pet owners and nonowners. A two by two analysis of variance showed that women living entirely alone were significantly more lonely than those living with pets only, with both other people and pets, and with other people but without pets. No associations were found between loneliness and pet attachment. Also, no significant differences were found in loneliness or pet attachment sco
