In order to test the hypothesis of a role of cochlear efferent activity in intensity perception in humans, loudness functions, loudness integration, and loudness summation were measured in the absence and in the presence of contralateral noise in normal-hearing subjects. Additionally, relationships with the effect of the noise on evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs) were tested, and comparisons with vestibular neurotomy patients were performed. Overall, the results failed to demonstrate significant effects of contralateral noise stimulation on loudness functions and loudness integration. Furth

AIM OF THE STUDY: The application of a noxious stimulus reduces the perception and responsiveness to other pain stimuli. This inhibition can be experimentally assessed with a method called 'counterirritation'. The question arises if counterirritation acts also on the perception and responsiveness to aversive but non-nociceptive stimuli (e.g., loud tones). Since aversive stimulation is often associated with state anxiety or state fear, we investigated in addition the modulatory effects of these emotions on counterirritation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 51 subjects participated in our study. We prese

Loudness is the primary perceptual correlate of sound intensity. The relationship between sound intensity and loudness is not fixed, and can be modified by short-term sound deprivation or stimulation. Deprivation increases sound sensitivity, whereas stimulation decreases it. We review the effects of short-term auditory deprivation and stimulation on the auditory central nervous system of humans and animals, and we extend the discussion to permanent auditory deprivation (hearing loss) and auditory pathologies of loudness perception. Although there is sufficient evidence to conclude that loudnes

This article describes a model of loudness for time-varying sounds that incorporates the concept of binaural inhibition, namely, that the signal applied to one ear can reduce the internal response to a signal at the other ear. For each ear, the model includes the following: a filter to allow for the effects of transfer of sound through the outer and middle ear; a short-term spectral analysis with greater frequency resolution at low than at high frequencies; calculation of an excitation pattern, representing the magnitudes of the outputs of the auditory filters as a function of center frequency

When applied as a tool for hearing aid fitting, categorical loudness scaling (CLS) is time consuming and not feasible in all subjects. It is therefore desirable to use objective measures for accurate prediction of loudness categories among hearing-impaired individuals. The present study aimed at exploring whether loudness perception at the ART is constant with varying hearing threshold. Seventy-five subjects with various degrees of hearing impairment, measurable acoustic reflex and normal middle ear function participated. The HTLs, ARTs and the levels of six loudness categories at frequencies

The central gain model of hyperacusis proposes that loss of auditory input can result in maladaptive neuronal gain increases in the central auditory system, leading to the over-amplification of sound-evoked activity and excessive loudness perception. Despite the attractiveness of this model, and supporting evidence for it, a critical test of the central gain theory requires that changes in sound-evoked activity be explicitly linked to perceptual alterations of loudness. Here we combined an operant conditioning task that uses a subject's reaction time to auditory stimuli to produce reliable mea

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of its external source. Non-invasive neuromodulation techniques have been used in the past decade to investigate the impact of stimulation on tinnitus perception. The objective is to invest the impact of high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) stimulation on tinnitus loudness and annoyance. Thirteen participants underwent two sessions of HD-tDCS (real and sham) in a double blind, sham controlled, randomized trial. The washout period between the real and sham stimulation sessio

Objective. We investigated tinnitus-related cortical networks in cochlear implant users who experience tinnitus and whose perception of tinnitus changes with use of their implant. Tinnitus, the perception of unwanted sounds which are not present externally, can be a debilitating condition. In individuals with cochlear implants, use of the implant is known to modulate tinnitus, often improving symptoms but worsening them in some cases. Little is known about underlying cortical changes with use of the implant, which lead to changes in tinnitus perception. In this study we investigated whether cha

In order to improve the prediction accuracy of the sound quality of vehicle interior noise, a novel sound quality prediction model was proposed based on the physiological response predicted metrics, i.e., loudness, sharpness, and roughness. First, a human-ear sound transmission model was constructed by combining the outer and middle ear finite element model with the cochlear transmission line model. This model converted external input noise into cochlear basilar membrane response. Second, the physiological perception models of loudness, sharpness, and roughness were constructed by transforming

Teachers often raise their vocal volume to improve intelligibility or capture students' attention. While this practice is common in second language (L2) teaching, its effects on tone perception remain understudied. To fill this gap, this study explores the effects of loud speech on Mandarin tone perception for L2 learners. Twenty-two native Mandarin speakers and twenty-two Thai L2 learners were tested on their perceptual accuracy and reaction time in identifying Mandarin tones in loud and normal modes. Results revealed a significant between-group difference: native speakers consistently demons

The impulse-like characteristic of glottal excitation in speech production is an important factor in the perception of loudness of speech signals. This characteristic is attributed to the abruptness of the closing phase in the glottal cycle. In this paper, an acoustic feature, called strength of excitation, is proposed to represent the impulse-like nature of excitation. The strength of excitation is derived from the linear prediction residual of speech signals, where the residual can be considered as an estimate of the source of excitation. Since the loudness of speech is perceived over one or

Hyperacusis is a frequent auditory disorder that is characterized by abnormal loudness perception where sounds of relatively normal volume are perceived as too loud or even painfully loud. As hyperacusis patients show decreased loudness discomfort levels (LDLs) and steeper loudness growth functions, it has been hypothesized that hyperacusis might be caused by an increase in neuronal response gain in the auditory system. Moreover, since about 85% of hyperacusis patients also experience tinnitus, the conditions might be caused by a common mechanism. However, the mechanisms that give rise to hype

Loudness is a fundamental dimension of auditory perception. When hearing impairment results in a loudness deficit, hearing aids are typically prescribed to compensate for this. However, the relationship between an individual's specific hearing impairment and the hearing aid fitting strategy used to address it is usually not straightforward. Various iterations of fine-tuning and troubleshooting by the hearing care professional are required, based largely on experience and the introspective feedback from the hearing aid user. We present the development of a new method for validating an individua

BACKGROUND: Middle ear surgery sometimes leads to unpleasant auditory impressions such as distortion or hyperacusis that cannot be detected by conventional audiometric testing.
METHOD: Sixty-one patients with conductive hearing loss caused by otosclerosis underwent audiological evaluation, which included a questionnaire followed by testing of the audiometric threshold, speech audiometry, and assessment and quantification of loudness perception with a commercial system (WESTRA). This investigation includes the postoperative measurement of hearing improvement and the patients' subjective impres

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of hearing loss caused by cerebellopontine angle tumors such as acoustic neuromas is unknown. The lack of loudness recruitment is thought to be one of the features of retrocochlear hearing impairment. In contrast to conventional suprathreshold tests, the categorial loudness scaling using the "Würzburger Hörfeld" is a valuable tool to describe the individual perception of sound. The aim of the present study was to analyze the loudness growth rate in patients with acoustic neuroma.

In environmental noise control one commonly employs the A-weighted sound level as an approximate measure of the effect of noise on people. A measure that is more closely related to direct human perception of noise is the loudness level. At constant A-weighted sound level, the loudness level of a noise signal varies considerably with the shape of the frequency spectrum of the noise signal. In particular the bandwidth of the spectrum has a large effect on the loudness level, due to the effect of critical bands in the human hearing system. The low-frequency content of the spectrum also has an eff

Noise-induced annoyance is one person's individual adverse reaction to noise. Noise annoyance is an important basis for determining the acceptability of environmental noise exposure and for formulating environmental noise standards. It is influenced by both acoustic and non-acoustic factors. To identify non-acoustic factors significantly influencing noise annoyance, 40 noise samples with a loudness level of 60-90 phon from 500-1000 kV substations were selected in this study. A total of 246 subjects were recruited randomly. Using the assessment scale of noise annoyance specified by ISO 15666-20

BACKGROUND: Individuals with early-onset severe-profound bilateral hearing loss (S/PHL) manifest diverse levels of benefit and satisfaction with hearing aids (HAs), even with prescriptive HA fitting. Such fittings incorporate normal loudness values, but little is known about aided loudness outcomes in this population and how those outcomes affect benefit or satisfaction.
PURPOSE: To describe aided loudness growth and satisfaction with aided listening in experienced adult HA users with S/PHL.
RESEARCH DESIGN: The Contour Test of loudness perception was administered to listeners with S/PHL in

Perceptive and receptive aspects of subjective tinnitus like loudness and tinnitus-related distress are partly independent. The high percentage of hearing loss in individuals with tinnitus suggests causality of hearing impairment particularly for the tinnitus percept, leading to the hypothesis that restoration of auditory input has a larger effect on tinnitus loudness than on tinnitus-related distress. Furthermore, it is assumed that high levels of depression or anxiety prevent reductions of tinnitus loudness and distress following restoration of activity in the cochlea. This prospective study
