OBJECTIVES: To identify the symptoms of higher relevance in patients complaining of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).
METHODS: A questionnaire covering 25 LUTS as defined by the International Continence Society (ICS) terminology committee was administered to 1000 adults complaining of LUTS and 360 not complaining (controls). Symptoms were defined as 'highly relevant (core LUTS)' when indicated by at least 25% of symptomatic patients with nine common diseases/conditions as one of the three symptoms that had a significant impact on their daily life.
RESULTS: Ten symptoms (daytime frequency,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To examine current evidence on the relationship between testosterone and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men, focusing on endocrine, metabolic, and inflammatory mechanisms and their implications for clinical practice.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies demonstrate that testosterone influences bladder, prostate, and pelvic floor function through androgen-receptor pathways. Low testosterone amplifies inflammation, oxidative stress, and vascular dysfunction, while metabolic syndrome with associated hypogonadism and sleep disorders exacerbate LUTS severity. Experimental and

INTRODUCTION: Gossypiboma is retained surgical swab following any surgical procedure. Its diagnosis is usually difficult because of variable and nonspecific clinical symptoms. It is a serious but preventable surgical event. It continues to occur despite considerable patient safety efforts.
CASE PRESENTATION: A forty-eight-year-old female patient presented with worsening abdominal pain, decreased appetite, and constipation associated with severe lower urinary tract symptoms. She had undergone appendectomy 10 months back and postoperatively she was having recurrent episodes of abdominal pain. T

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether more severe urinary symptoms and poorer quality of life among patients on diuretic therapy are associated with decreased adherence to the diuretic regimen.
METHODS: Participants were recruited via ResearchMatch.org and sent a REDCap survey. The Overactive Bladder Questionnaire-Short Form (OAB-q SF) was used to assess urinary symptom bother and health-related quality of life (HRQL). Participants were asked if they skip diuretic doses due to urinary symptoms with a bivariate (yes or no) outcome. Subgroup analyses of loop vs non-loop diuretic and those taking the diu

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) result from conditions and diseases that affect the bladder and the urethra, and can occur in men and women of all ages. LUTS can be debilitating and affect a person's quality of life significantly. This article describes the definitions and classification of various LUTS, explains the aspects of an initial LUTS assessment and outlines the validated tools that can be used to support this process, including questionnaires and bladder diaries. It also provides information about the contributing factors associated with LUTS and the effects of these symptoms on

BACKGROUND: Lower urinary tract symptoms are a common problem in men and the incidence of these symptoms increases with age.
OBJECTIVE: This article provides an update on the evaluation and treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms in older men. In particular, we describe current nomenclature, diagnosis, the International Prostate Symptom Score, and currently available medical and surgical treatments as well as indications for referral to a urologist.
DISCUSSION: Lower urinary tract symptoms may be divided into voiding and storage, and men may present with a combination of the two symptom gr

An established standardized terminology is necessary for communication of scientific information, and for prevention of mistreatment and misdiagnosis. Terminology concerning the lower urinary tract has been much discussed; in particular, the meaning of terms like lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), urgency, frequency and nocturia, overactive bladder (OAB), and detrusor overactivity (DO). It is natural and desirable that all suggested definitions are subject to criticism, and it is important that discussions for improvement of the existing terminology continue.

OBJECTIVES: A large-scale nationwide epidemiologic survey was performed to determine the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and their impact on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in Japan.
METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was mailed to 10,096 randomly selected Japanese men and women aged 40 years or older. The survey questions, developed by the Japan Neurogenic Bladder Society, encompassed four areas: demographic characteristics, LUTS, HRQOL, and treatment seeking. A modified King's Health Questionnaire was used to evaluate HRQOL. Correlations among the response s

The association between erectile dysfunction (ED) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) has garnered attention as investigators have hypothesized a common pathophysiology to explain the assertion that they are causally linked. This relationship between LUTS and ED has received increased attention because both diseases are highly prevalent, frequently co-associate in the same aging male group, and significantly influence the overall quality of life. A causal association between LUTS and ED cannot be established on the basis of the ever-increasing number of epidemiological studies. Attempting

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether the severity of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), when controlled for other factors, is related to erectile dysfunction (ED) in the male veteran population. Early evidence suggests that LUTS may be associated with ED in men.
METHODS: A total of 181 male veterans were prospectively entered into the study. They completed the Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM) and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) questionnaires. Of the 181 men, 144 also underwent uroflowmetry, including determination of the postvoid residual urine volume. Demographic and medical h

Male lower urinary tract symptoms include frequency, nocturia, urgency, urge incontinence, stress incontinence, post-micturition dribble and post-prostatectomy incontinence. All of these symptoms can be treated conservatively. In this article, the first of two parts, a detailed subjective and objective assessment is provided based on a Delphi study undertaken by the author. The objective assessment includes a digital rectal examination to assess the pelvic floor muscle strength in order to provide a patient-specific exercise programme. The diagnosis of stress incontinence, urge incontinence, p

The first part of this article (Dorey, 2000) described the subjective and objective assessment of men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). This article will examine treatment protocols for stress incontinence, urge incontinence, post-prostatectomy incontinence, post-micturition dribble, overflow incontinence, reflex incontinence and functional incontinence. Pelvic floor muscle exercises, biofeedback, electrical stimulation, urge suppression techniques, and fluid intake are discussed. It is concluded that men with LUTS can benefit from conservative treatment.

Acute bacterial cystitis is a very common disease of the lower urinary tract, in particular among women with an active sex life. Symptoms include dysuria, frequency, nocturia and urgency. As these symptoms are nonspecific, acute bacterial cystitis should be distinguished from more severe urinary tract conditions by an appropriate medical history.

A transurethral resection of the prostate is a good operation to relieve bladder outflow obstruction and has a low incidence of complications. However, recent work suggests that many men with symptoms may not require an operation, and it can probably be delayed in a majority for many years. This may be particularly important in old and frail patients. Many men with outflow obstruction have irritative symptoms such as urgency, frequency and nocturia; these could be treated with anticholinergics, provided they have normal flow rates and small or absent residual urine volumes. Pharmacological tre

IMPORTANCE: In the United States alone, 1.6 million people identify as transgender and gender diverse. Although transgender individuals commonly report lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), the factors underlying these symptoms are poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: Our primary aim was to compare the severity and effect of LUTS in transgender men/transmasculine individuals taking testosterone therapy with those not taking testosterone. We hypothesize that patients who are using gender-affirming testosterone have less severe LUTS compared with those who are not receiving such treatment.

BACKGROUND: Financial toxicity (FT), first reported in oncologic patients and generally defined as harm to patients caused by the cost of treatment, is less well described in non-malignant urology. In chronic conditions related to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), such as BPH, treatment costs may result in a significant substantial burden. The goal of this study was to characterize the association between FT and LUTS. METHODS: A cross-sectional web-based survey was administered to a random sample of adult men through a national registry of volunteers (ResearchMatch). Disease-specific inform

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to present a narrative review of the literature on the management of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in patients presenting Parkinsonian disorders (PD).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We carried out a literature search in PubMed and Embase database, without time restriction. We used keywords and free-text words around "Parkinsonian disorders" AND "lower urinary tracts symptoms" without language restriction. We focused mainly on papers less than 10 years old. We included all studies evaluating LUTS in patients with PD.
RESULTS: For the diagnostic management,
