Development and evaluation of a multi-axis loading simulator for the spine, pelvis, and lumbosacral region.

The treatment of injuries and disorders of the pelvis, lumbar spine and lumbosacral junction remains challenging due to rising case numbers, complex anatomy and high biomechanical demands. Despite advances in surgical techniques and implant design, problems regarding stability and long-term functionality persist, requiring individualized solutions and a thorough biomechanical assessment. Biomechanical studies are essential for assessing implant performance under physiological conditions. This study therefore aims to develop and validate a versatile biomechanical loading simulator capable of re

Secondary Chondrosarcoma of the Lumbosacral Region: Are any Bones Spared in the Multiple Hereditary Exostoses?

Osteochondromas are the most common benign bone tumors. Usually solitary, multiple osteochondromas (exostoses) are seen in patients with Multiple Hereditary Exostoses (MHE). Chondromatous transformation of lumbar osteochondroma in a patient with multiple exostoses is a rare phenomenon. We present a rare case of secondary chondrosarcoma of lumbar exostoses with patient presenting with symptoms of pain in the right lumbar region and paresis of right lower limb. Patients with multiple exostoses are prone to develop chondrosarcoma early in life. These patients need long term follow up with regular

Abnormal anatomy of the lumbosacral region imaged by magnetic resonance in children with anorectal malformations.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the frequency of lumbosacral anomalies, the association with urogenital abnormalities, and the correlation with defaecation pattern by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: A prospective analysis was performed of routine MRI in patients with anorectal malformations. Between 1990 and 1994, MRI was performed in 43 such patients: 31 boys and 12 girls. Twenty four had a high anorectal malformation, 16 had a low anorectal malformation, and three had Currarino's triad. MRI was performed before reconstruction in 26, and postoperatively in 17. Urogenital anomalies were

Extra-skeletal Ewing sarcoma of the lumbosacral region in an adult pregnant patient: a case report.

Extra-skeletal Ewing sarcoma in pregnancy is rare. There is thus limited scientific evidence to guide clinicians in its complicated management, particularly within the context of early gestation. We therefore share our successful outcome in a 32-year-old pregnant patient, following a unique management strategy of complete aggressive surgical resection prior to neo-adjuvant therapy. The case involved a 2-month history of right-sided back and gluteal pain, with associated paraesthesia. Lumbosacral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an approximate 40×50 mm indeterminate mass in the lower r

[Neurosurgical treatment of children with spina bifida associated with congenital spinal lipoma in the lumbosacral region].

This paper presents twelve neurosurgically treated children with spina bifida associated with congenital spinal lumbosacral lipoma over a 3-year period. The introduction deals with various types of lipoma, their development, clinical presentation, local findings in children with spinal lipoma, as well as with the significance of neurosurgical treatment. The age span of children with occult spina bifida and spinal lumbosacral lipoma was from 3 months to 2 years, and there were seven girls and five boys. In all the twelve children, a smaller or bigger fatty mass in the lumbosacral area was notic

[Diagnostic importance of CT examination of the lumbosacral region of patients with lumbo-sciatica (author's transl].

In 160 patients with lumbo-sciatic complaints, CT examinations of the lumbo-sacral region were carried out. In 106 of these cases, which were controlled by myelography and/or operation, the CT diagnosis was correct in 74%. In 19%, the CT findings were uncertain, and in 7% they were wrong. A reliable CT diagnosis could be made mainly in the case of a medial or medio-lateral disc herniation of a size above 0.5 cm in diameter if the patient was not operated previously, and in extremely lateral prolapses into the intervertebral foramen without myelographic changes. Small medial protrusions, specia

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy in the lumbosacral region: A case report of a rare soft-tissue tumor.

BACKGROUND: Fibrous hamartoma of Infancy (FHI) is a rare, benign mesenchymal lesion typically presenting within the first 2 years of life. While it commonly occurs in the axilla, shoulder, or upper trunk, lumbosacral involvement is exceptionally rare and can mimic other congenital or neoplastic lesions, leading to diagnostic difficulty. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a 10-month-old male infant with a 7-month history of a progressively enlarging midline lumbosacral mass. The swelling, measuring 15 × 13 cm, was soft, non-tender, and had ill-defined margins. Initial ultrasonography was inconclusive

Complex regional pain syndrome type II associated with lumbosacral plexopathy: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a well-known clinical entity, first described in the 1800s, consisting of pain, hyperalgesia, edema, and sudomotor changes either without (Type I) or with (Type II) a definable nerve injury. CRPS Type II is most commonly caused by high velocity missile injuries, mononeuropathies, and partial nerve transections. CASE REPORT: In this case, a 25-year-old soldier who sustained a blast injury causing multiple spinal compression fractures, extremity fractures, and pelvic and sacral fractures was transferred to a U.S. Army medical center for sur

Uterus-like mass of müllerian origin in the lumbosacral region causing cord tethering. Report of two cases.

The presence of müllerian-origin tissue in the lumbosacral region is extremely uncommon. The authors report two cases of müllerian-origin tissue in that region. In the first case a 33-year-old woman harbored a conus medullaris mass lesion. Spinal dysraphism, tethered cord syndrome (TCS), and diastematomyelia were also present. In the second case a 24-year-old woman presented with low-back pain and a conus medullaris lesion, which was a cause of the TCS. Pathological examination in both cases revealed a uterus-like structure with evidence of fresh and old hemorrhage. The rarity of this lesion a

Tuberculous lesions of the lumbosacral region. A 15-year follow-up of patients treated by ambulant chemotherapy.

STUDY DESIGN: A 15-year clinical follow-up of tuberculous lesions of the lumbosacral region. OBJECTIVES: To verify the hypothesis that the lumbar lordosis and the specific biomechanics of the lumbosacral region influence and alter the healing pattern and progress of the disease when compared with their effects in other regions of the spine. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: An estimated 2 million or more patients have active spinal tuberculosis, and the global incidence of the disease is increasing. The involvement of the lower lumbar region and the lumbosacral junction is relatively rare, with fe

Regional lumbar alignment, physiological variation, and pelvic incidence in healthy adults: Emphasis on the lumbosacral junction.

The acquisition of habitual bipedal posture required substantial reorganization of the human spine and pelvis, including the development of lumbar lordosis. While global lumbar alignment has been extensively studied, the anatomical relationship between regional lumbar lordosis and pelvic incidence in healthy adults remains incompletely understood. In this cross-sectional study, 154 rigorously screened healthy adults aged 20-76 years underwent standing whole-body EOS imaging, simultaneous force plate balance assessment, and body composition analysis. Sagittal alignment parameters, including seg

Does Preserving or Restoring Lumbar Lordosis Have an Impact on Functional Outcomes in Tuberculosis of the Lumbosacral Region?

STUDY DESIGN: Single-center retrospective cohort analysis. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the impact of loss of global lumbar lordosis (GLL) on functional outcomes in tuberculosis of the lumbar and lumbosacral spine and to define strategies to restore or preserve the physiological lumbar lordosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: In tuberculosis of lumbosacral spine, loss of lumbar lordosis (LL) leads to altered lumbosacral biomechanics. All available studies have assessed treatment outcomes with respect to physical well-being, neurologic improvement, bone healing, and changes in radiologic parameters. N

Case study: Gluteal compartment syndrome as a cause of lumbosacral radiculoplexopathy and complex regional pain syndrome.

We present the case of a 24 yr old male who was diagnosed with gluteal compartment syndrome and was subsequently found to have developed lumbosacral radiculoplexopathy and complex regional pain syndrome. The patient's gluteal compartment syndrome was diagnosed within 24 h of presentation to the emergency room, and he underwent emergent compartment release. While recovering postoperatively, persistent weakness was noted in the right lower limb. Results of electrodiagnostic testing were consistent with a lumbosacral radiculoplexopathy. After admission to inpatient rehabilitation, the patient com
